Those with freezing issues: Do you have creeping current on the Macbook's chassis (stroke it with two fingers, do you feel a tickling)?

When you connect an external display, powered USB hub or anything else that comes with its own power-supply, does touching the Macbook 's chassis around the USB/Displayport with the external connector cause a short sparkle/flash (turn off the light in the room to make it more visible)?

i still experience the same random instances of freezing, but the hang time is now quick enough that the cursor doesn't have time to beachball before it's already passed. just a random hitch here and there now. theyre on the right track, but i hope there is more to follow in the efi update department.

The MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.9 has solved my random (30-second) freezes.

After the update:

Unfortunately for me EFi update didn't help at all. It could even do more damage... This is how my display looks at random. Everything is responsive. I'm getting new messages via Adium and Mail... but the display looks exactly like that: http://img267.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=dsc01852q.jpg

I am having the same issues, dammit!
Wow... sorry to hear (see) that.
Was the display fine before the EFI 1.9 update?
You guys have the hi-res 1680 x 1050 screen, or regular?

Yes it was, and I have the regular

Me too. I had the issue, where screen got fu**ed up by moving a group of pixels to different places and then finally whole OS X just froze. But I never saw something like this. Now I've got two issues instead of one. I don't know what to do. I can't give my MBP for service because I need it for work :/

Huh, that black strip problem happened to my friend with his 15" MBP. He ended up sending it in for repairs and I don't think he's had any problems since.

issue still coming back after the efi update. seemed to help, but everything still systematically locks up until nothing responds. lasts about 2 minutes. very infuriating. my gpu is locked on nvidia

Did you check if your firmware is updated? It won’t say if it failed to update. It took me 3-4 firmware updates to figure out that you need to have MBP connected to the power source in order for the firmware updater to work.

I just got a replacement 2010 17" i5 MacBook Pro. I've been having random freezes with the machine... Very sad for a brand new replacement machine.

Anyway, EFI 1.9 is supposed to fix it, but it says the model I have is incompatible, but I also think it has the firmware installed already.

Any ideas? It sucks to have the hard drive just stall or whatever and not come back on.

Bump?

I really can't use the machine like this. I'm just trying to do a Time Machine backup, and it's freezing and causing Time Machine to stop working.

I believe I have the 1.9 firmware since my Boot Rom Version is MPB61.0057.B0C, is that correct?

the update went through. now i'm sporting MBP61.0057.B0C. there's a discernible improvement because the freezes don't occur as often, but when they hit, they hit hard. have to wait until the computer gets back from it's bathroom break.

Maybe that's more of what I'm experiencing, because it hits pretty hard when it does hit.

Well my issues seem to have disappeared. I reseated the RAM and put back in the old hard drive that I thought may have been bad. Since then, no problems.

So, those that are comfortable, try reseating your RAM. Can't hurt, right?

My MBP 15" is almost dead!

hi everyone!
as i read from your experience, i'm just considering the idea to send a written complaint to apple, with a little help from my friend advocate.
just to let you know, apple technicians changed:
- RAM slots
- hard disk

I formatted HD just 3-4 times and still it freezes. in these days, more than before!!!
what do you think it is? motherboard?

i bought it as "refurbished" on the apple store online, and during the first month everything was ok. so, after the 30th day, it started to freeze unexpectedly.

i am italian, and i have to face italian technicians... i can't send it straight to cupertino!!!
if you know any other ways to obtain the money back or a new macbook, just let me know.
until now they (apple care on the telephone) treated me like an idiot...

when did you all buy your comp?

might have been a defective uhmm day?

or maybe they have to recognize that is a massive defect?
anyway, i have to prove that is still a random error but with that i can't work! all my datas are inside a external hd, stored with time machine. thanks god i have a pc, very old but still working.

I've had 3 freezes in a 2 month period on my MBP 15" i5. Sent a bug report to apple. Hope they get the message since there is a substantial amount of us effected from what I've read.

hopefully. until now, they told me they are formatting the HD and installing again snow leopard. now MCP is with the technicians again and I wish they will find a very BIG problem! i'm fed up!

It seems pretty clear to me that sending the machine in to have it repaired is just a waste of effort; nobody knows what's causing the issues, so Apple is just shooting in the dark replacing random parts, probably unnecessarily.

My i7 should arrive between now and Saturday, and I really hope I don't have any issues. If I do, I'm not gonna bother letting the "genii" crack my computer open and start haphazardly replacing parts. It seems weird--it affects Core iX and Core2Duo owners, so it can't be the Core iX chips themselves. Also because it affects both C2D and i5/i7 owners, it can't be the automatic graphics switching since the C2D owners don't have it. Going even further, both C2D and i5/i7 computers use different GPUs, so it can't be any of those either.

I'm pretty stumped.

Take a deep look at OP forum references, and you're gonna see that this seems to be "bad times" for Apple.

I agree, these are indeed "bad times" for Apple. I hate to see it, as this was once a company that was quite stable, produced great products, and could be counted on.

I've got thousands upon thousands of dollars invested in their products, and it's sad to watch the "melt down". I just took my iPhone 4 out of it's case for it's semi monthly cleaning, (even though it's clean by most peoples standards) only to find the back glass splintered!... What a Shocker!

My new 2010 MacBook Pro is also suffering from the "lockup / freeze" issue. And it just goes on and on... a sad commentary on a company that was once a world class operation.

Apple, now running on hype, smoke and mirrors, and the most skillfully manipulated dialog from Steve Jobs. It's Apple operating in denial "cause we're making so much money" mode.

Yes they are, Apple has never made more money off the backs of it's customers than they are right now. A powerful testament to their leaders ability to get us all to drink the Kool-Aid. Please excuse me, I'm about to puke.
