The Vaio Z is a pretty fast machine, especially given the SSD. I doubt if it actually takes a whole minute to boot up, probably less than 30 seconds. Windows 7 just takes a fat while of time to start, regardless of the machine it runs on.

I have a Vaio F.. it's nice for a Windows laptop, but I'd jump for a 17" MBP if I could afford it. HOWEVER, unlike the F vs MBP 17" - a fair comparison where both machines class very similarly (and the MBP wins in battery life), the 13" MBP is a little piece of crap that doesn't deserve the "Pro" name.

Eh? That's pretty harsh for probably one of the best 13" (or close to 13") laptops I've ever personally used. I've owned a 15" Acer which had so many features, it lacked any quality. I had a Dell XPS 13" (why buy laptop bigger if it's going to be portable? - you only need 15" or 17" for more power and screen resolution). The Dell would of been perfect if it didn't have a nagging design flaw in it's mobo design. Luckily I bought out the 5 year warranty so I could get it replaced with refurbished parts and flog it on eBay.

Even as an IT Techie, the 13" MBP (Late 2009) is perfect. Powerful enough to do everything I need, DJ with stability and also run a small Windows 7 partition for my Cisco course and software.

Going back to the Sony, I guess it's preference in comparison to the Z11. I can't see why the Z11 is any more beautiful or sturdy. I love the aluminium all-in-one construction of the MBP. Give's it the strength where multi-part plastic laptops like the Sony don't have. My brother's Dell 15" Studio is so weak and flimsy. He's quite harsh to it on lugging it around, but that's where a MBP would save him.

Oh, and Mac OS X is worth the money paying for if you don't want any hassle. Where I work with hassle-boxes at work with Windows Server/Windows 7 config; Mac OS X just works. :D

Vaio Z normally takes between 30-40 seconds to boot up. Still not as fast as booting up with OS-X, but still fast for a Windows 7 machine. Does anyone know how fast the bootup time is with Windows 7 in a 15" MBP?

25 seconds with my SSD, from the time I select Bootcamp after startup.

I find it funny people think 7 is a lot better than Vista, I have been a PC tech for a major corp for over 15 years and was a mom and pop tech for almost 5 years before moving to corp. I have forgotten more about MS operating systems than most of you hope to ever know. Vista and 7 are so damn so close as far as the kernel and backend go it's not even funny. I think 7 is great don't get me wrong, but to say it's leaps above Vista is stupid, They changed the taskbar and made superfetch a lot better. The only other reasons it seems better is the drivers and software that are compatible with the Vista based kernel are now available and tested, Vista would have been just as good if released today.

Win7 is faster than Vista, especially on older hardware. I thought Vista was an improvement over XP but it did pretty much nothing for usability. Win7 takes Windows usability up several notches. Still not as good as OSX, but now I can use both side by side without wanting to kill myself when using Windows.

No doubt the Vaio Z11 is faster. You will see the difference when loading web pages. I have both machines. SSD + i5 definitely helps.

I wish my Z11 had the multi-touch pad like my MBP.

Web page load times make no difference if your connection or browser sucks. All the CPU speed in the world or having an SSD makes no difference.

Windows 7 is faster than Vista or Vista SP 1.

Vista SP 2 runs circles around 7 in terms of general rendering/loading/refreshing speed.

Windows 7 runs better on older hardware.

Vista SP 2 does not use the GPU to render what you see (like 7 does), so it "feels" faster.

Windows 7 has built in optimizers that keep it running top notch all the time.

On a decently powered machine (good CPU, 4GB RAM, 7200RPM or better drive, dedicated chip with good memory), Vista SP2 will blow even XP out of the water in terms of general functionality and usability, as well as driver support.

Windows 7 installs significantly faster.

Vista can be used to upgrade XP in-place without losing data (takes FOREVER on a domain machine though).

Anyone judging Vista negatively has never used a clean installed Vista SP2. They're basing it on what they know of the early Vista which was indeed horrible and bloated. Windows 7 is generally superior; but faster? No.

One thing you guys didn't mention was resale value. I've never had a problem selling a mac for a fair price. I can't sale PC's in this price range. Try buying a $2500 laptop and selling it for $2000...or even $1800. I bought the Z12 for work recently and a few months later I tried to sell it. I've sold probably 5 macs easy. I didn't even get one response on the Vaio. Not when most schmucks go down to their local Best Buy and buy an HP i7 for $1000. It's a hard sell.

If I had two grand to burn, it wouldn't be on a Sony laptop; it would be for a more expensive MacBook Pro :D

It is quite pathetic how much laptops recently have copied the keyboard and the main design of the MBP. Even in commercials the only computer I see is a MBP.

Nice pics....but I still think the MBP looks WAAAAY cooler than the Sony...:D

The Sony Z in black looks amazing though. I don't like the Silver version.

Apple actually copied Sony, not the other way around. The keys are Sony their idea.

The 13" MBA do it in 11-15 seconds :D
