First post for me, so go easy guys!

I am waiting for the new iMacs too, mainly out of curiousity as where they are going to go with desktops, this might well be a spec bump and the big redesign will happen next year but what I am waiting to see is:

- Complete redesign of iMac to include a big 27"+ inclined and moveable touch screen. you still have mouse and keyboard if you want to use it conventionally but you can move it to 20-40 deg and just use hands similar to MS surface, but much more apple-like ie smoother, faster and intuitive.

Maybe this sort of thing is 2 years off in reality but how long will it be before Apple tries to snatch a big slice of the desktop market by creating something that the market did not know it really wanted like the iPad did.

I have just trawled through the whole of this thread now and it seems the touch screen thing has been discussed in earlier posts - apologies!

Some more thoughts though:

- I think Steve Jobs comment that vertical touch screens do not work was possibly a way to throw off competitors, also touch screens do not have to be vertical!

- This kind of thing would only really work with screens 27" and above, you need to be able to chuck windows around the screen.

- For proper work, I think the traditional keyboard, mouse pointer is preferable, but Apple is all about selling product at the end of the day and they are increasingly after the home consumer market. I think the flock of people who frequent Apple stores on a Saturday afternoon all over the world would LOVE a iMac like this!

It'd be interesting to see the figures of iMacs vs Macbook(pro)s sold, mainly because lots of iMacs are given to educational institutes. Whether that counts as sold or not is another story.

I don't think Apple gives any Macs for free. Institutes get them with a discount of course but not for free of charge.

Redesign possible

I agree with bulldoze, either this year or probably next year we will see a complete redesign of the iMac. I hope it's this year b/c I'm due for a new iMac.

I really hope they are released b4 July tho otherwise that month will be costly with the new iPhone 5 most likely being released. I've held off buying a new iMac for two years. I'm anxious to see the latest iMac release. If I had to be tho I would bet we see a complete redesign next year.

so the next expected update for the iMac would probably be in may? is that the first, middle or end of may. nobody may know, I'm just planning on waiting until after the next update and getting myself an iMac. in the middle of a transition from my old ass pc to a mac. i'm on a macbook pro right now, 2009 version. i like it alot. but the battery is burned out, not portable at all anymore :(

Apple will most likely use AMD 6950M which isn't much slower than the 6970M. Also, download MSI Afterburner and give the 6950M some OC and you just made it a 6970M, for free.

Hm, would you please educate me on that one? This "removes" the -100mhz difference between the two cards and works in OS X?

Will this boil the imac - and will this void any guarantee?

Currently, there are no OCing utilities for OS X AFAIK. There are several for Windows though (e.g. MSI Afterburner). Since most games are only for Windows anyway, and run much better under Windows, it isn't that big of an issue.

It will obviously cause extra heat but you can use e.g. MacFan to speed up the fans under Windows to avoid overheating. There will likely be a thread about OCing the next iMacs' GPUs with recommended clocks and other settings. OCing will leave no trace so it does not void your warranty.

Apple doesn't usually do Mac updates with only few weeks between them. I've said April for months and I think it sounds reasonable. I doubt we'll see Lion in iMacs though, probably a few months after.

yep i agree april looks like the month of the imac .. lion probably july ish? pfft im not buyin the imac until it ships with lion preinstalled ..

I've been a pc user since the beginning, but now I'm going to switch to the upcoming new Imac. My question, when will the new ones go on sale? If their announced in April, does that mean you can buy one in April? Do you have to wait in line once they are released like the Ipad 2's? I don't think I can take another long line....

THanks,

THanks,

Updated Macs are usually released immediately, not announced beforehand like iPad and iPhone for instance. Often they ship in 24 hours or sometimes in couple of days but no extensive waiting like with iPads (no line either).

Great thanks,

I can't take waiting in lines like I'm doing for the iPad 2

I was going to order an iMac this week but am now going to wait for the new one.

I understand Lion will be out during summer time (UK = june - august), but i did not realise that apple would also update the machines.

Will the base model still be the same price as the current base models?? Or will they go up in price do you think?

Cheers

I thought this would have come on scene with iMacs 2 YEARS BACK... but it didn't. Now, I am doubtful we will see it for at least 2 more years.

What would bring it to Apple now-ish would be someone else designing such a computer and making it work so well that they (Apple) must step up to the plate and compete. Some turds will complain that such a computer wouldn't work, but it will be the next stage of table-top PC when it is designed properly.

Back to subject: it's now coming out soon. As for current designs more plausible to see--iMac sans "chin". I'd love to see the iMac trim off that sick thing. Because of rumors a few months back, I hope to see an iMac trimmed down to sub-$1000 market price; preferably without as many ports, without the video out port, smaller screen with beefy resolution.

The modern Macs are now far faster than 99.9% of my computer usage requires, and I do PS work often. While faster is better, more expensive is not better and I'd rather have an adequate iMac for less $ than a redundantly speedy iMac for twice the price. Most people probably feel the same, especially because very few people in the market need high speed.

Yeah you could see yourself doing PS work with a touchscreen?

ABSOLUTELY!

What kind of question is that? Are you nuts? With a stylus? Apple would kill Wacom overnight. PS and an iMac would be inseparable.

Tough screen would be fantastic for everything but typing. And that's why they have wireless keyboards.

Didn't you ever heard about the Apple Battery Charger? It comes with 6 rechargeable NiMH-batteries (Sanyo Eneloop) so you can put 2 in your keyboard, 2 in your mouse and 2 in your trackpad or in the charger so you don't have to wait when you change!

THAT's Apple's view of using your wireless devices, which IS ecological.
Therefore, Apple probably won't use Li-ion batteries in their next devices, because this is their solution.

That idea is least ecological than putting li-ion battery inside wireless keyboard, mouse, trackpad and make some port to charge them, if needed apple can make the charging port identical to iPod/iPhone.

So the iPod sync cable can be used to charge about everything wireless made by Apple.

Sony is the champion of this practicality, and Apple should learn from them. Putting out the battery and recharge it doesn't seem cool at all .. Apple used to like something cool, so they should do the same with their wireless keyboard/mouse/trackpad

I'm going to be a bit more polite than the previous reply.

1) Apple doesn't do stylus

2) Even if they did, there is a MASSIVE difference between doing a capacitive touchscreen (like the iPhone/iPad) and doing a large monitor with a PRESSURE SENSITIVE overlay (like the Wacom Cintiq).

Apple could always surprise us, but I think all of the people looking for a touchscreen iMac are living in fantasyland. Microsoft has already demonstrated that a desktop OS does not work well for touch devices - why on earth would Apple ignore that, having already demonstrated that they understand the difference between the two better than anyone?

what is wrong with all you people who want a touchscreen imac .. seriously ? no touch screens .. buy an ipad if you want touch screen:mad:

Well yes,you can use an iPad as a giant input device for your iMac. Kind of like the Nintendo DS. Virtual keyboard, gestures, tablet for drawing, intelligently adaptable to the application you're running on your Mac and it syncs too keeping all of your files, photos, music connected. Just prop it up on that nifty cover and it's at the perfect angle.

Can't you? There's an app for that....

No iMac will be complete without one....

Alright, try lift your hands and hold them where your mouse is on the screen for, say, half an hour. After your shoulders are burning or your elbows are sore from resting on the table at an angle, then you'll see it won't work.

I believe Steve Jobs already talked about this - the ergonomics is terrible. Touch screens only work when they're low down or even horizontal, like the ipad and iphone. Besides, I'd imagine you'd trash your screen with greasy fingerprints.
