iMac Buyer's Guide updated. :D

I've noticed! What's it based upon? Is it because the "Days Since Update" exceeded the average days? There hasn't been any update since feb 24.

It would be pretty awesome if they implemented a touch screen that switches to iOS if you flip it horizontally and back to Lion if you straighten it again. I'm afraid that would increase the price drastically though...

That's a very neat idea. I don't see that happening any time soon (if at all). It would be pretty neat, but as you said the price would really climb. It'd probably be cheaper (and possibly smarter) to just buy a Mac and an iPad.

Yes. Buyer's Guide is not a reliable indicator of an update. It is just based on previous update patterns. It might be more reliable if it did not include all iMacs but since it includes all, even ancient ones, it's not that reliable.

Nothing you can't calculate yourself within a few minutes, based on the data in the Buyer's Guide.

Not sure about anyone else, but I'm hoping for a 24" model.

Sadly I doubt they'll update before April, since that's when I plan on buying mine. Ah well, I doubt there will be much of a problem since I'm getting a 27" with an i5.

The next iMac would have to really blow me away if Apple wants me to upgrade within the next two years. I have a 20-inch 2007 model (bought new in early 2008) that's barreling along since I upped the memory. Personally, it's still plenty of computer for my needs.

I love these iMacs. They're beasts. I bought an iMac G3 in 2001 and the thing lasted well into 2006 before I replaced it with the first MacBook (which was a mistake, I found out, after two logic board replacements within a year).

The really weak spot has always been graphics. I sure hope they get that sorted out this time because if so, I'll get myself a 27", if not, no iMac for me.

Well, Apple can't suddenly put a 250W desktop GPU in there. They are already using the best mobile GPUs which are based on higher-end desktop GPUs.

They could come a long way with high-end 100w mobile graphics... the ones used today are not even midfield.

How come ATI 5850M is "not even midfield"? It was the second best mobile GPU from ATI when iMacs were released. Those high-end "mobile" cards from NVidia are ridiculous. They cost a fortune and run awfully hot. ATI 5850M provides much, much better performance for buck and watt compared to e.g. NVidia GTX 480M.

100W is about twice as much as what ATI 4850M is which has been the hottest GPU in iMac so 100W GPU wouldn't work without some improvement in the cooling system.

I thought the Radeon 5750M was the fastest used in the iMac and that card is about midfield. If others can use cards like the Radeon 6970M in a laptop, Apple should be able to use it in a AIO.

It is NOT AMD 5750M. Apple markets it as AMD 5750 (see, no M) but in fact, it is AMD 5850M which is roughly equivalent to the desktop 5750. Thus the naming.

Apple will most likely use AMD 6950M which isn't much slower than the 6970M. Also, download MSI Afterburner and give the 6950M some OC and you just made it a 6970M, for free.

I chose to hang on to my purchase of the soon to be OLD iMac 27" Ultimte for 4 reasons:

1. I prefer to wait 3-4 months after the release of the new iMac before I buy to avoid being an early adopter Guinea Pig ;)

2. The new video card in the new imac will most likely be the 6950, but I play on my Playstation 3

3. The new iMac will have Thunderbolt, which will be great for a fast external SSD - but I already ordered the iMac 27" Ultimate, which has a pretty fast built in 256 GB SSD for OS and programs and a slow 2 TB HDD for data

4. The new iMac will have a fast Sandy Brudge CPU - but since the CPU in the iMac I ordered is Quad core 2,93 Ghz, which can be clocked to run 3,5 stable - I don't see this as a huge disadvantage either

I look more forward to an even better and faster panel in the new iMac than everything else !

Laptops still outnumbered desktops by over 70%. iMacs sell fine but not enough to make it worth it to develop an iMac Touch IMO

Why do you think, sir .. that Mac sells more laptop than desktop?
Yes Mac-Pro is considerably expensive, or maybe too many cores for us regular folks. Even the base model of Mac-Pro still a bit outrageous for most of us .. but I think iMac is a very good desktop with decent price and choice

I just don't get why more people out there don't use desktop Mac as business computers. I find my office job, my photo editing and some programming really fun on current iMac.

And also people around me, most of them using Mac computers only on MBP or MB White, I hardly find an acquaintance who use iMac on home desktop

Is it because Apple don't want to be on desktop business anymore? Apple tend to love Macbook and their mobile gadgets more than the desktop line

In short, Apple prioritize them :(

It'd be interesting to see the figures of iMacs vs Macbook(pro)s sold, mainly because lots of iMacs are given to educational institutes. Whether that counts as sold or not is another story.

There is also of course, the "every other kid in college class rocking a macbook" phenomenon too.

More people are gonna be rocking a macbook than an iMac because the average person doesn't need a true desktop studio type environment for their usual tasks.

And yeah Apple tends to prioritize what makes them the most money. It's a horrible feeling knowing that Apple probably won't release another media event for the next big iMac redesign, and instead hosting media events for their iPad and iPhones. They have good reason to though, as the iPhone and the app store now make the bulk of apple's revenue. The company's changing with the time though.
