What about a AMD Lliano APU chip?

It should be somewhere near current arrandale in terms of cpu power + it has very powerfull gfx on die. The gfx will be way more powerfull than sandy bridge gfx and also lots faster than current 320m

I'm not sure why people keep saying that the MBP update could have no optical drive and a flash hard drive. That computer already exists, and its a MBA. There is no reason to make more of them.

The MBP will probably have a 1440x900 screen, but I'm not sure what they can do with the processor+graphics combo. The current core 2 duo is the best they can come up with so far.

Completely agree. What do I see (or hope for) in the next update?

1440x900 definitely.
New CPU definitely - i3, maybe - or maybe even a new AMD config.
New GPU maybe - I'm hoping so.

Except...

I think we'll also see the new SSD built in just like the air. It's a new technology for Apple to have in the line-up and I think they want to use it across the board. It's part of them taking what they've learned from their iOS devices and applying it to laptops. I just would like to know if "instant on" would work with a SSD/HDD combo.

Forget losing the optical drive etc. I bet it's sticking around for a few more years.

If this next revision of 13" has some of this... I'm ditching my 15" 2.4 i5. I actually would be happy with the screen res change alone. I just hope they don't nickle and dime us for it with an "customized" upgrade cost. I have loved my i5 15" but I just moved to NYC, and it's a little too big to lug around every day etc etc.

From what I hear you can take advantage of Instant On if the OS is installed on a SSD.

I could go with a setting like that. 4-8 GB SSD for OS installation and a HDD for storage of Apps, Documents, Music, Pictures, and so on, and so forth.

Intel has confirmed they will no longer produce Core 2 Duo from fall. So I think Apple would update the MBP 13 before X'mas

Well this appears to be completely untrue eh?

MBA, OMGZ uses C2D.

MBP 13" will get i5 when Apple works out a way to do the GPU switching without the chip that is present in the 15 and 17" MBPs. [Space issues]

Until that point?

It says C2D. :)

Main article: Nehalem (microarchitecture)

The successors to the Core 2 brand are a set of Nehalem microarchitecture based processors called Core i3, i5, and i7. Core i7 was officially launched on November 17, 2008 as a family of three quad-core processor desktop models, further models started appearing throughout 2009.

With the launch of 32 nm processors in the upcoming months, Intel has scheduled to discontinue some Atom, Celeron, Pentium, Core 2, and even Core i7 models. The Core 2 Quad Q8200, Q8200S, Q9400, and Q9400S are scheduled to be discontinued in 2010.[9] Intel may also rebadge some Core 2 processors in the E7xxx, E8xxx, Q8xxx, Q9xxx and Wolfdale series as Core i3 processors, together with new Core i3 processors using the 45 nm Nehalem microarchitecture.[10][11]

For CPU, I think i3 will be attached on behalf of Core2Duo - this is being GONE. Then Apple would of course give some design improvements/fluctuations on 13" since i3 is a bit hard to attach on a design like that, as I've heard.

So Apple can make the Air(s) but they can't figure out how to install an iProcessor in the 13" MBP? You really believe that?

And the i3 is crap. Intel's intentionally crippled i5 processor to fit their monopolistic price structure. Widely available on $600 laptops.

Apple just saved themselves the retooling costs on the 13" and installed a really cheap processor that increased their profit margin.

lol have u looked inside the macbook pro 13 actually the biggest thing that takes up the most space is the battery its about 2 times the size of the optical if not bigger a lot of people i know like the idea of the optical in the computer so they dont have lug around the optical to hook it up to computer by the usb or firewire ports and most people dont have their dvd's digitized yet so they bring there dvd's with them on vacation and such plus most of the movei companies frown on people not using there digital version but those files are huge so i do my own so they are somewhat smaller

Good lord, man! Learn punctuation, please! Also grammar and proper capitalization, if you can find the time.

I always was amazed how I often mistook other's 15" MBPs for 13"ers.
And though I'm on my second 15" MBP (with '06 13"MB being "home server") - I always dreamt of 13-14" MBP with at least 1440 x 900 res

New Air might be it for me, as I don't care much for DVD.
My only concern is that Sandy Bridge is near :(:eek:

Sorry to hijack the thread, but another vote for Air
(or matte/HR option for 13" MBPs :))
I hate glass on my iPad enough already to get the Air for one (next best thing to matte )

Apple doesn't need three different 13" models. One has to go. I think it will be the MBP. Apple needs a low price point in the MacBook and a higher priced MBA. My guess is that Apple will eventaully release 13" and 15" MBAs with USB 3.0. The integrated SuperDrive is dead.

That is based on an article that was released in June 2009... There is no reliable data about C2Ds being renamed, it is only guessing.

Is so then they had better remember how to make a backlit keyboard for the Air.

I'm not buying any laptop without a backlit keyboard.

The DVD drive is not dead!!! It's no secret why message boards are filled with people with problems with their computers, the 99% of other people who have no problems simply don't post "Hey, I love this computer it works great!!"... Although I would argue many do on Apple boards, but that's another story ;)

The same logic applies with wanting to scrap the optical drive, it's only enthusiasts and tech fanatics that want it deleted! No one is here saying "I love my optical drive! I can burn music and pictures for friends, watch my movies, play games, archive data, etc..."

Yet it's the minority that say "Kill the DVD drive! I want a secondary SSD! or I want Discrete Graphics!!" Normal a** people either don't want or don't care about this kind of stuff...

Here's an idea, how about Intel gets off their high horse and allows integrated graphics from 3rd parties? There is nothing wrong with the architecture of the current 13", the only problem is people can't get the newest, shiniest i5's to fit because of Intel's BS legal ropes.

I could care less what they do as long as in 2012 (when I upgrade to a new one) they have 15" MBP with backlit keyboard. I don't want the MBA's because they are to skinny for me. Call me old school but I like how heavy my current MBP is. I will be looking for 8GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive and at least an i5 processor. Other then that Steve can do whatever he wants to.

I'm going to bet it gets killed off.

Professional Line:

11.6 inch Air
13 inch Air
15 inch MBP (Maybe w/o cd/dvd drive as option)
17 inch MBP (Maybe w/o cd/dvd drive as option)

Home Line:
13 Inch plastic macbook

Desktops:
Mac Mini
21 inch iMac
27 inch iMac

Then the mac pro, mini server, and xserve floating alone.

Your saying the 13" Pro will be killed off and the Mac Pro will stay? If any Mac is going to go it'll be the Mac Pro for sure!

I can see the 13" MBP ditching the DVD drive and HDD in favour of Flash storage, Core CPU's, dedicated graphics and massive battery. I can also see a reduction in weight and thickness as result.

The amount of space freed up by getting rid of the DVD and HDD is tremendous and will provide a great deal of flexibility.

From what i've read Intel is supposedly phasing out the Core 2 Duo's this late fall. Therefore it can't really have a C2D. And with the Nvidia & Intel lawsuit, Apple might have to switch back to the Intel GMA.

I don't keep up with everything but if Intel is discontinuing Core2duo will they discontinue the 32bit core duo or dual-core which apple stopped selling in 2006 but Dell and HP still sell at staples and best buy today?

Just curious

Two seriously bad-ass innovations associated with future Apple devices are Light Peak, which will integrate USB, Display Port & Ethernet in a single cable, and WiGig, a 60Ghz wireless protocol with bandwidth of 9Gbps (!). These near future technological development will make USB 3.0 seem unattractive, even irrelevant to Apple which has a stubborn minimalist attitude towards their design. The WiGig would allow wireless sync of your iPhone/iPad, and transfer Gigabytes of iTunes files in less than a minute. You will see these in Mac Pro first, or high end Macbook Pro 17, or maybe Apple will surprise us.

ok,after reading all thez comments and suggestions,I guess the best way is to get rid off the OD ONLY in 13" model.Let the 15" and 17" models have these ODs so people who use them, have options.1 thing most people don't understand is that by removing optical drives, its not like they can't access CD/DVDs,u can always have external drives for $50-100...And still if u love these drives go for 15" and 17"...I guess this will satisfy the majority.
Now to utilize the space on 13",firstly give it a speed bump,it lags behind many $1000 laptops in terms of specs,so give it a good GPU and just put a massive battery in the remaining space, even if they increase the size of battery by 1.5x times,we'll have some 10 hours of real time usage.
This way 13" will be a perfect fit between the air and the pro...
What do u guys think?
