Honestly, I think most people buy a macbook and keep it like it is. It's really just changing a simple trend. Right now you can have a MAX of 8GB, so why not just max it out up front? I don't think it's that bad of an idea because I feel it can bring the cost of a MB down $100-200.

I would not care to "max it out" up front if Apple charged reasonable prices for their RAM upgrades (or HDD upgrades for that matter). I can go to Newegg or even a brick and mortar store like Best Buy and buy better HDD and RAM at a fraction of the cost Apple wants to do the "upgrade." If they tell me I can't do that myself they are basically putting more money in their own pockets by forcing people to "max it out" up front at the price Apple sets.

I don't know why people want the MBP to be thinner.. MBP is thinner than 99% laptops that isnt ultra portable and have crappy specs. I prefer more power or battery life :D

I agree too. MBA is way to weak for my uses.

Some people need to get heavy computational work done on the road and prefer not to lug around a big heavy ThinkPad or Elitebook.

If the new models have SB and the new 480 SPU RADEON I will be quite happy and very tempted. If in addition they are lighter weight via some LM alchemy and have better battery life, that might just put me over the edge.

optical drive

they will probably keep the optical drive. who cares if if makes the computer fat or not, they will lose customers if they get rid of it. they wont necessarily lose customers if they keep it. losing customers is the last thing they want to do at this point.

guess what, on a side note, the Discovery launches for its final run sts133 thursday too! Wow Jobs has one hell of a birthday.

The pro will move into more powerful specs:
Less power consumption
Longer battery life
Higher resolution screen with more powerful graphic card
More and faster RAM
If they remove the ODD they will gain space to use the Air form factor...I would prefer the removable option, so a BluRay drive can be put in. I also do prefer to buy a CD and then rip it, than to get a download. Same for movies, I have not been satisfied with the quality of a movie from iTunes (AppleTV and HDTV), even in a 15" MBP they do not look like a good DVD and not even close to a BluRay. Netflix HD streaming rocks.

How would Apple handle a design with removables nowadays? Any mockup?

For the MacBook they kill the plastic cracking whore design and will merge a Retina Display iPad with facetime camera into a small Air keyboard with all the good stuff you expect to have: light peak + MagSafe+ SSD + extra battery.
So you can keep the Mac side of it in the backpack/case and be more portable with the iPad, and connect it to the Mac when you need the physical keyboard or Lion apps, periPherals.
I am unable to do any mockuP, can some give this a try?

nope, check the resent rumors. MB is killed off and only 2 13" will remain. But finally i3 in the 13"!!! WOOHO! I am a little disappointed however on not having a 1080p screen on the 15"...

Of course thats all speculation. And the one i love the most, the option to switch out the opti drive with ssd, hinting that they kept the opti drive!

And with only 2 days until the keynote, theres a better chance of something getting leaked than a mockup. and that probably wont happen since it hasnt yet.

So then. May i rub it in? the opti drive is still there and it is the same dimensions as last time. All it was is an internal upgrade as i suspected. Happy now? No ultrathin without opti drive. this thread is now useless as the laptop has already been released.

How about this...?

MBA and MBP mix-up - liquid-metal/carbon

I think the current MacBook pro design is the perfect size. If you want something ultra light just buy the Air. I prefer like others that they concentrate on the power more than anything.

The current design though is honestly one of Apple's best designs for a electronic device, I would put it up there with the iPhone 4, and the current iMacs.

Guess I'll come in with my two cents.

For the short term:

Removable ODD as a Built-to-order. Instead of listening to the dead man (as much as he was respected, he isn't here any longer to predict trends of the future..) and this will allow buyers to configure DVD or BD drives, select from a conventional spinning drive / SSD, or perhaps a larger battery. Heck, Apple might as well buy out MCTech and internalize and apple-ise the optibay.

Things I'd be keen for, but would probably involve structural / chassis change...
- 4 RAM slots. Dell and HP both offer that, and for those of us who require the Pro for intensive applications (unlike those wanting to flatten it into an air ), the affordability and ease of accessing 16GB of RAM, which really isn't hard to burn with a small number of demanding apps is great. 32GB opens future-proof possibilities and anyone like me who doesn't upgrade every minor refresh (or four) will appreciate.

- Removing the clock, etc off the 'main screen' and positioning it near the keyboard. This would definitely involve a lot more change. Likewise, having a litttle screen much like the top screen of SLR cameras, giving quick access to information from the time, CPU usage, fan controllers and the current user account would free up space for more menus, a whole new UI, or allow easy access when using Lion's new full-screen mode. (I've had this idea for quite a while now and Lion's full-screen just gave more reason to implement it!)

- Rear-mounted camera. All of us who carry our laptops with us on the move, trying to capture the moments on the go. This makes sense doesn't it?

- Addition of a CF card slot (Maybe a customisable input slot, much like a built-in card reader. If it can be replaced, it could open possibilities to anything from additional USB ports, another SD slot, CF, P2, and who knows...)

- A docking station. This one's definitely been said before, but being able to come home and hook my laptop up to desktop-standard performance and a good chunk of storage is definitely a must! (Bigger monitor a bonus)

- GPS antenna perhaps?

- More appropriate as a BTO order... replacing the keyboard with what Acer's done - an identical-sized touchscreen in place of the keyboard.

Many more ideas, but I'm sure Tim Cook needs a bit of time to get his bum marks ingrained on the mighty Apple iThrone...

I love creative people but both of these are terrible ideas imo. They would only create useless clutter.

You get the docking station using Thunderbolt, not cheap but for 1000 bucks you also have a really big monitor. At the rate the optical bay fails (no double layer read/write after 1 year or so), they can get rid of it. Just add a second hard drive. And btw add a second thunderbolt port and USB3 of course :)

Fair enough, if they're your opinions.

When Apple products carry "Pro" in their name, though, I'd expect more, likewise with Air and non-pro products, I'd expect a clean, simple and consumer-orientated design. Much like the difference between a Point & Shoot camera against an SLR. A complete novice may complain about the stupid amount of knobs and buttons on an SLR, whereas a professional would only want more direct access to each and every function.
