Congrats to Atlanta and NFC home field advantage, but with thus being a violent sport most noted for December injuries, they should rest their key players as much as possible to avoid injury.

They not only look strong, but very focused. Ryan didn't throw nearly as many yards or attempts as many QBs, but he made sure his passes count with 4 TDs and no interceptions. This is the type of quarterbacking and offense which helped to lead my 49ers all the way to 13-3 and the NFC Championship without any clear stars like a Manning or Brady. If my team doesn't make it, I will root for Atlanta on the NFC side since it's really great to see a team peaking with such teamwork late in the season. I think a lot of people are itching for an Atlanta-Houston Super Bowl and if this is the case and especially if they both end with great 14 win seasons. I won't doubt if it has the highest viewership ever. As for Houston today, I think they will also go to 13 wins and demolish the Vikings.

Why would anyone be itching for that? People wanted to see Giants / Patriots last year because it was a rematch from a few years before when NY spoiled the perfect season. That was a real storyline and I've head it was the highest rated Super Bowl ever. I'm not saying it wouldn't be a good game and I'm not saying it won't get great ratings (all Super Bowls do), but there is nothing nationally compelling about Falcons / Texans.

I disagree. The Superbowl that true NFL fans want to see is the Payton brothers going at it. So a Giants / Broncos bowl would be one heck of a Superbowl. :p

I'm not sure why you disagree with me then. I think Manning / Manning would by far be the most compelling possible SB story line.

2014 Giants/Jets in Giants stadium would be the most compelling. Of course the Jets suck and that would never happen.:p

And to make it even more interesting, Tebow is cut by the Jets as the playoffs start and then signed by the Giants. Manning and McElroy each get hurt in the conference playoff games. Tebow and Sanchez square off in the Super Bowl.

Two can play at making up impossible scenarios. :p

as if New York needs more violence

But I think that would be an amazing Super Bowl and probably the most watched one ever.

Let's say it's either the 2013 or 2014 season and Eli is still good and still with the Giants, and going for a 3rd Super Bowl to tie Tom Brady, and then the Jets actually end up being a Cinderella team with young unknowns but one we can root for in the next decade. It could be a cross town changing of the guard from one with veterans and championships against one with new names.

I was always hoping for Joe Montana and his young Niners to go against the vets of the Raiders like Jim Plunkett in a bay area matchup in the early '80s but it never happened.

Well that Superbowl is next year and Eli is signed long term so he will be there baring injury.

p.s. **** you Cowboys.

New England is killing me today.
I hve to go into work today wearing football jereys. Not sure on the reactions people would give with myself living in Florida.

Second half we'll come back I plan.

That injury thing can be a real bitch. Montana may have had another ring, and Steve Young could have had two more, but not all players last like a Testaverde or Favre. Troy Aikman looked unstoppable and headed for breaking all records but those concussions dropped him out of contention when he was just 33. Anymore with the defensive players getting bigger and faster, I don't see too many QBs being productive much past age 30. Half the game is the talent and brains of a QB in his position, but being able to hold up to the cumulative damage which doesn't start to heal until after retirement is the other half of that position. Sometimes a year off like what Brady or Manning had could have been blessings in disguise for helping to get back to form and increase career time.

Aikeman was not even the best QB of his era and he was never headed for breaking all records. His was a very, very good QB who would have been a borderline hall of famer, but had the luck of having a great cast of players around him which made him look even better.

Except for the QBs who run around, you can barely touch a QB anymore. They are incredibly protected and will probably be wearing red jerseys and flags in a few years (joking -- sort of).

Offense started out sloppy with the ball that ridley should have caught being deflected to the safety and then the other pick that was actually Brady's fault but they are looking better now.

Bill's treating this game like a preseason game for his defense. 2 key starters didn't even make the trip (Spikes, Dennard) and 2 more key starters (Wilfork, Talib) are seeing very limited snaps. Looks like he's trying to get these key guys some rest while giving the backups some valuable game experience.

But this game is essentially irrelevant because we're not going to get a 1st round bye. This game is Jacksonville's super bowl and basically a preseason game for the Patriots and that's the only reason that it's even close. Regardless of what happens with this game, it's hardly indicative of what to expect once the playoffs start. But don't worry, the Patriots are still going to win this game.

And just remind anyone who gives you **** for your jersey that next weekend is the end of their season but just the beginning of ours. ;)

edit- Like I said, no reason to worry :)

Has anyone been able to stream NFL games on their iPad for free? I'd like to watch the Houston vs Minnesota game today. I found this article online. Any opinions pro or con? Thanks!

The Broncos could end up the #1 seed in the AFC with a little help from the Colts. Can't wait for next weekend!

Well protected compared to what? Tell that to Brady ('08), Big Ben (numerous times), A. Smith, and I suspect even Peyton, too outside of the year he was out. Sure, getting hit less is better than getting hit often I will concede but every take down and hit has terrible potential. The very scary injury on Big Ben, which could have been much worse (even fatal) didn't look all that bad, and neither did Brady going down in '08, but every time a QB goes out there, there's a risk.

The guys hitting the QBs seem so much scarier than when I started watching a lot in the '70s and early '80s with the finesse of a Montana and a clean aerial attack. It's gone back to black and blue more and controlling the clock and is just as much a fight as it is a game. I don't know if it's just the evolution of football, doping, or other factors but they are monsters out there. That being said the QBs are a lot bigger, too but when there's more than one big guy all aiming at just one QB, there's a world of hurt that guarantees eventually getting every starter and taking him out of his usual 16 game rhythm.

Also, congrats to Seattle for out-D-ing the 49ers. That type of play will get you a Super Bowl win.

Regardless, I'd rather have home field than not

Absolutely.

And the reason non-home field teams have a better percentage is that because for every six teams, only one has home field advantage. It's unfair to stack up one very good team against the other five teams and expect that one team to outperform all five. It's more likely that the #1 seed goes through and certainly at a better rate than one out of six. There are times a #6 seed can go all the way but it's usually not the pattern.

Yet a number of non-running QBs have been taken out with concussions from either standing in the pocket or run of the mill scrambling. I agree that some of the rules are ticky-tacky but Force=Mass x Acceleration and these DE's and linebackers aren't getting any slower or smaller so giving them free reign to tee-off on pretty stationary target is just asking for trouble.
