If I had the money I would buy the 27" iMac. I've been waiting on the Mac Mini to get the update treatment. My 10 year old pc just died and right now I have my 2009 13" mbp hooked up to a 24" screen and a keyboard & mouse. The pc drive was good so I was able to salvage all of my wife's data and email off of it and put it on to my mac. I was off of the pc so only my wife was using it. So the wait is on. Wife isn't technical but she like using osx so far.

I too am puzzled why the iMac and Mini have not been updated yet? Maybe Apple really does only have 1 engineer working on both of them. I mean the Mini is almost a direct lift of the 13" mbp. There is nothing in it that should hold up any kind of design issue.

You would buy an iMac right now? End of Octobers my limit then I'm building a hackintosh.

I was also thinking about building a hackintosh, but all of the possible glitches make me a bit weary of doing that.

Not new, and not the least bit plausible. That the A6 is the fastest smartphone CPU around doesn't make it at all suitable to a desktop computer. The iPhone 5 geekbench's somewhere between a Pentium 5 and a Core i3.

Totally agree. Designing a modern CPU is no easy task. If it was Intel would have a lot more competition other than AMD... and throw in IBM for their processor work.

I should have corrected that I would buy after the next iMac update... but because of money issues I am waiting on the next Mac Mini update. Unlike the iMac the Mini has seen zero rumors since the ivy bridge mbps came out.

2 more weeks until my crystal ball is put to the test.

but still not a single peep...

I await in trepidation for an update but I sense it is looking like 2013, I would like to be wrong, but then again I did say I thought I'd be choosing and iPhone 5 before I got a new iMac and I didn't expect to be right on that one.

I think Apple understands that the whole ecosystem is needed for iphones and ipads to sell the amount it does. If they stopped selling macs, the iphone and pad sale would drop more and more over time. If I understand this, I think they do as well.

At the present time I think Macs have a lot less to do with iDevice sales then you might think they do. The Mac line could be dropped tomorrow and there would be little effect on the iDevice line other then a few loyal Mac customers that would be so mad at Apple they would boycott the iDevices.

I don't think the portable Macs are going anywhere at least for the next few years, but I wonder if the desktop Mac isn't towards the end of it's run. Something needs to come soon or they have basically "Mac Proed" or "iPod Classiced" the iMac line. For those of you who are into cars and specifically American cars that means they are going to "Crown Vic" it.

Mac will be updated soon thats clear and for sure, See them removing front glass to make it slightly thinner than the current gen, Will have Sandy Bridge, Usb 3 etc. Wont be a major upgrade over the current design is my take.

They done the same with New iPhone and retina MBP in terms of removing glass that is.

Edit: Could Also be a shift in Apple that they don't need to upgrade as frequently as they use too. The iMac is powerful as they are now, from the base line upward. Yes USB 3 is great but Apple want you to use Thunderbolt.

Whats funny is people saying they won't buy current macs due to old tech yet when Apple do release new macs Ivy bridge will be months old with Haswell only a few months away.

Glad i bought top end 21.5 in feb. It was needed couldn't wait around just to say I have latest iMac, things needed to be done.

I'm waiting until the end of October. I am taking a much needed vacation and I will be back the day before election day. If there are no new iMacs or mac minis by then I am going windows. Windows 8 looks worth a try in my opinion. And really, my computer "needs" are so much less these days then they were even a couple years ago.

I want to be able to do some extremely amateur video editing. And I'd like to do some very basic music demos. Just demos, nothing pro, I go to a real studio for that. So that's it. Why do I need a top of the line mac to do those things? Yeah the iLife software is great for accomplishing these tasks quickly but there are alternatives and I can adapt, especially for the price. I am having the same realization about my iPhone lately. It's been a long time since I've used a computer or phone that wasn't Apple and I think it's worth exploring. So that's my personal deadline, about another 5 weeks and then I pull the trigger!

And don't forget the Icloud thing, with that, potentially no Mac-Pc with Itunes is needed anymore.

There's a part of the picture missing...

Yes, people are saying they won't buy current macs due to old tech. BUT it's the price point that is stopping them. IF Apple reduced the prices by 300-600 bucks, then I reckon people would jump all over them. The other problem is NOBODY wants to buy right now IF a new machine is due. That's just poor shopping strategy. The only problem is, we could be waiting until next year for a new iMac.

The same good tortuous fable to avoid acceptin Apple is simply wronging.
Sorry,don't wana be rude,so i apologize if i was but i don't buy this,actually
the main problem is that i have the money but i can't buy what,by months, could be,available.:(
And what about Tb,yes you're right but..the tech is way overpriced and with no real Sdk spreaded to the mass developers in order, for example,to give us a good external Gpu solution ( and don't tell me the bandwidth..i know, but this is not the point) to make us enjoy our buyings,is simply a waste, even because with such freedoom you won't ever need to buy a new machine (Imac, laptop) just to have a better solution hurting their sales, you cannot even connect an external video input to your Imac... .Its quite clear why and i don't like it anymore.

That is true and conflicts with people sayn that common user just buy because it is Apple, common Mac user is more Pro than people think, not an expert but not an idiot neither.
I mean if common user doesn't understand what is buyin ,do you really think it would understand differences between Os?You say it will buy for the quality, but a lot of Win8 products are going to invade the market this fall and as far i can see they look really well and if the price its good and cheaper, well its 1+1.

Exactly. I can only talk about myself, obviously, but I'm looking at the base iMac. The list price is €1158 here in Italy, just as the same day as when it was introduced (if not higher: if I'm not mistaken it was €1149 and it was subsequently raised due to the introduction of a "copyright protection" law or whatever; everything is more expensive here than, say, Germany for that reason.)
I could order a refurb for €979 later today, as soon as they pop on the store again. That's 18% less, almost as if it were VAT free if you will, and most importantly it's below the psychological threshold of €1000. Sure I'd have to add cash to it if I wanted a Magic Trackpad, but instead of "almost €1200" I'd spend "less than €1000". To my eyes it's not so much that it's €179 less, it's the threshold itself that makes me intrigued.
Though that notwithstanding, I can't bring myself to order it. I've been hovering my mouse on "buy now" countless times during the last few months, and never went through with it exactly for the reason you say: the new one may be out next Tuesday, or on the 9th, or sometime during October.
Would my refurb still work? Sure, they don't die just because a new model comes out. Would I be enjoying my new computer? Heck yeah, I'm using a white plastic 2006 iMac right now. So would it be a smart purchase? I don't know, it depends. It'd have a shorter lifespan (OS X would stop being supported at least a year before than if I had just waited a few more weeks for the upcoming model), it wouldn't have USB3, and so on. So am I buying? No. But I'm biting my hands for not having done so weeks or months ago, when it made slightly more sense.

I think right now, at this moment, it'd be better to just wait off through October.

Yeah sure, people said "wait" numerous times in the past, especially before WWDC but not all the hopes/rumors come true. WWDC and Mountain Lion release were good estimates for iMac updates, no one should laugh at the people who chose to wait because of those two events.

October now seems like a possibility, it would be silly if you have waited all those months to buy iMac now. I'd be thinking differently if it was November now but it's not, yet.

But this is all based on pure speculation. No real indication apart from Kuyo aka "I know when Apple releases ther stuff".

The low stock issue, has been rectified plenty of times... what other indication do we have... what are we waiting for?

I might pull the trigger at the weekend. I know I am only waiting since July, but there comes a point where you wait for the waiting sake. I could have enjoyed my Imac for 2 months already, yet I am accessing this webpage for "nothing" ;)

I really love all the discussion guys and appriciate all your input, but I should have just bought the Mac without looking at these threads here... :D

Should have gotten the hint when I saw the word "rumor" in the addressline ;)

Everything on this forum is speculation, we do the best to make some sense of it.

He's been right so far. And I'm one of those people who believe when that Apple PR person said the iMac was excluded from the 2013 refresh. This points to 2012 release. Other folks say that this can also mean 2014, I find that hard to believe.

Good for you. Why are you "wasting" time here? :) If I had Mac desktop that I was happy with, I wouldn't spend another second here.
