I reckon the 21" model will be towards the end of November. Assuming production is going fairly well, the timing is within Apple's control and the three variables are (1) is there enough initial 21" stock to meet demand, (2) how are the stocks of 27" models building, and (3) what other products are launching.

In an ideal world each product would get its own launch window to ensure repeated footfall within the Apple stores. The second tranche (cellular) of iPad minis and 4th gen iPads seem to be coming around 16-21 November, so if I were Apple I wouldn't be looking to muddy the waters by launching the iMac then.

Move another week further on and you are either on 23 November or into the week commending 26 November, which is course is the last possible week if Apple is to make good on its November commitment.

As for the 27" models, they could follow one or two weeks later, so w/c 3 or 10 December. Any later than 14 December and punters will have their minds focused on other things as Christmas approaches. And even an early December launch might see many business purchases deferred until the new year.

Of course, all of this is total speculation...

It's easy to see that there won't be preorders, we'll direct buy it

It's just as easy to see that Apple is having production problems (hence their refusal to even allow preorders weeks after announcement) so they could very well push back delivery and simply allow preorders in the weeks to come.

don't think so

I want to see the new 27 imac but feel they wont be out until Jan at this rate :(

Why? They said December, and December hasn't even started yet. If there was going to be pre-orders they would have most likely announced it like they do with other projects.

There is currently no proof saying the 27" iMacs won't be released during December as they stated.

I agree. However, I wish they would at least disclose the BTO options in more detail with the prices.

I think we are nervous that there may be further delays due to the lamination issues. Shouldn't be much longer till we know for sure though.

I wish they would do that as well, I'd like to know how much I will be spending ahead of time. But I don't see it as signifying a delay.

Apple said "available in November/December" but there is no certainty. iTunes should be available in October but now it's November.

What I want to say is that Apple is not forced to release the iMac models in November/December.
I can imagine that Apple will delay the iMac to January/February.

The question is:
Does Apple need pre orders to see how many people want to buy an iMac?

I don't think there will be pre orders.

Point is every day there is no news means more iMacs are being built. I don't like the delays and think something is wrong hence why I'll be waiting for the 2nd generation of these new models.

New iMAC is HERE, if they weren't able to place'm in stores on November they had been selling the old model and they hadn't said anything

It seems logical to open preorders so they can gauge how many are wanted. But we all know Apple has it's own kind of logic.

When we talk about Apple, it's most about the heart than the logic... They know their products demand is high and they have an high rate gains/cost then they can make so many units of iMacs and they'll sell all of them!

They have stated supply will be constrained initially, so they already know they won't be able to keep up with demand near term.

What makes sense is that they aren't at all sure when they'll ship or ramp up, so can't quote delivery times for per-orders. Maybe all they could give for delivery is "Someday" which wouldn't be well received.

Awesome explanation.

I'd say if they were having yet more production delays we would have heard from Kuo by now.

But they must have been extremely confident in being able to deliver the new models in their stated times by allowing there to be no inventory of the old ones anywhere except a few that happened to be left in the physical Apple Stores for so long.

I don't expect the 21.5' to launch this month, just like iTunes 11 got delayed a month

Don't keep on dreaming! iMac 21.5" will be this week on the apple-store. It's not alike the case of iTunes11, iTunes10 is still working and you can wait for the 11 but there are NO iMacs on stores and some people is needing to replace theirs computers right now, they'd better cover this need soon if they don't wanna lose clients.

So? People can want and need it as much as they like, but that won't change the reality if there really are production delays. Just because people want it and because the old ones are not on sale any more doesn't magically make production problems go away.

Personally I am hoping that the stated release months are accurate, but given how vague they are, I am also not ruling out the possibility that it will slip back.

The rumour sites and tech press as a whole and the age of the old models forced Apple's hand by making them announce much sooner than they would like, which leads to exactly this sort of situation with frustrated customers who know they are coming and want to buy but with no idea on exactly when other than "soon".

They could have refreshed the old model keeping the external appearance if they had problems with the production of new iMacs and the could present the new ones next year. If they've done the presentation of new iMacs on the keynote for this month is becasuse it'll happen.

I still think the new iMac will be released on time but many may not arrive until a few weeks later, especially custom orders with Fusion and faster CPUs.

ETA - just to clarify we'll see them on the Apple store and in shops but in limited numbers, some might have to wait weeks for their orders to be filled. JMO
