Windows 8 on Retina MacBook Pro

Hi everybody, could someone who's got their hand on the new Retina MacBook please post some full size screenshots of how Windows 8 looks on it?

Microsoft has talked about their support for High PPI displays, but it would be nice to see it for your self. (Kind of).

OWC should have a removable SSD Blade type for the new RMBP soon. That's what they say about MBA "non-removeable" SSD. As it turns out OWC sells their own SSD blade that can be inserted easily into the MBAs. Check this out : OWC SSD for MacBook Air

And what type of NAND do they use? How reliable is it?

What happens if you want a different controller (SandForce is unreliable, Intel or Samsung are what to get)? What happens if better SSD controllers come out and you want to use those instead?

What about shopping around to find a bargain? You can't, it's a monopoly.

If you wanted to be stuck w/ a SandForce controller & mediocre NAND you could buy a standard SSD for less than half what they charge.

So, because one company makes a kludge it's OK for apple to make everything proprietary?

You're in denial.

The card slot is SDXC compatible meaning that if you have an SDXC card that can keep up (Up to 2tb!!!!!) you can hit a maximum theoretical transfer of 300MB/sec and a minimum of 104MB/sec

http://www.photographybay.com/2010/01/12/sdxc-cards-what-the-new-format-means-to-photographers/

USB 3.0 is around 400MB/sec maximum.

I ordered this the other day for this exact purpose. It was a good price and there were two specific reviews of people using it for the reason and saying it was great.

If it's not as great as I expected, I'll just throw it in my DSLR.

Same here, I ordered one of the 32gb Sandisk 90mb/s cards to store my photoshop brushes on so I don't have to clog up my hard drive. When I accumulate more brushes, I'll just reorganize the folders I keep them in and split them between multiple cards so I can easily swap cards for a whole new brush set.

I'm on the go a lot though, otherwise I would probably have invested in a 200-400gb SSD Thunderbolt external drive, but that's one more big clunky thing to have hanging out of my machine while I'm out on the job rather than a neat little card sitting right inside the machine :)

It does hang out a bit though :p

Hi, can anybody who bought the base rMBP tell me how much of the 256gig ssd is remaining when you take it home for the first time (after osx)

Also, since the space limitation is concerning me (and i cant pay the extra $600 for the 512gig model) does anyone have recommendations on a external HD that has wifi capability which i can easily transfer and view stuff on that second hard drive without physically having to connect it to the macbook.

Thanks.

The seagate goflex satellite looks like a good bet for your needs. Though wifi hdd's tend to be expensive, is there any big reason why you can't plug it in?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148755&Tpk=seagate satellite

Thanks,

The only real reason is the convenience of not having to go and get it whenever I want to transfer/look at things to/on the external hard drive. So I guess its just pure lazyness on my part :p

I was considering getting a time capsule hoping I can backup my data on the macbook and use the remaining 1+ terabyte as a wifi external hard drive but i read somewhere that you cant easily do that.

whoa... is that a misprint? How the hell are they offering it so cheap, Amazon and others are all in the $170 range for that one????

Apple Care and HD upgrade

Hi!

I've made my mind and I will buy the retina display MBP. My plan is to buy the base configuration (256 Gb, i7 2.3 etc.) with the 16GB ram option and Apple Care.

My question is:

What happens if, after one year, I make an HD third party upgrade (which will eventually come out)? Will I lose Apple Care?

Thanks!

Well they wouldn't warranty the HD if it isn't theirs. If you have an HD problem, you would have to contact that company. Otherwise, maybe you could just swap the stock HD in and then take it in to get fixed.

Trust me, I thought the same thing. I ordered it and got a shipment notification with the $89.99 price still.

I say go for it while it's that cheap!
Doesn't it only work for 11+? My 15 is an 11, but my 13 is a late 09/early 10 can't remember. Though I recall only certain ones worked with sxdc.

I think new designing is great. I like the aluminum which is lighter weight. I did not realize that some companies are using liquid metal. I guess this could make the product more durable, but will probably drive the price up.

Just so long as it's possible to do that without leaving any tell-tale signs that you've been tinkering

My early '08 MBP has something (BT antenna IIRC) stuck to the HDD (or the mounting bracket) with double-sided tape so I doubt it would be possible to swap drives without leaving evidence.

For me, by the time 512GB is not enough I expect external Thunderbolt SSDs to be reasonably priced :)

It's a great price, but it is slow. Might want to consider spending a little more for the faster cards (600x vs the 133x this card is).

So I was originally going to buy an iMac provided that there was a new one released. I'm a graphic design/motion graphics student and I need a new workhorse to get me through video editing. I currently have a 3-4 year old MBP that just can't handle video editing without moving at a snails pace, it's ridiculous.
So what I want to do now is get one of the new MBP's (non retina) to replace the one I have now. Will that be strong enough to handle a good amount of video work? I'm currently using a lot of After Effects in my projects. Would I need to bump up to the 16gb of ram?

Also with those MBP's (non retina), are you able to sway out the ram yourself or is that also soldered on like the retina ones?

Thanks!
