I'd buy a new SSD myself and make Apple pay for it. That's just me. Hearing about the turn around is absolutely not acceptable.

Though, mine hasn't failed and passed the Apple update. Mine is a Toshiba SSD though. So, no idea when or if it will cut out.

Mine passed the Apple update only to fail a few days later. No ideas what the deal with that was.

For those that had SSD failures, is there a way to boot up and operate OS X entirely from an external drive (e.g. a 128 GB USB thumb drive)? If so, how? I would like to know a temporary way of using my MBA solely through an external drive in the event that my MBA also suffers from internal SSD failure.

Wondering the same thing.

Yes, simply hook up an external hard drive, use recovery mode and restore a time machine backup or install fresh to your external drive.
If you have osx on flash or dvd you can do it that way as well.

128 GB USB thumb drive would likely be slow compared to a hard drive, most thumb drives are not made for all the writes that take place within an OS and could shorten the life of them.

Wonder if I could still have it shipped to a depot. If I called AppleCare, would they offer that? I obviously still have the computer while they wait for the part, which they could use for someone else's failed SSD.

You can definitely still do so then. When Apple sets up service but allows you to keep the Mac until the part arrives you are free to shop around for a quicker/better solution. Call AppleCare, or the Genius admin at your local Apple store, and set up a mail in repair. You'd likely get it back within 3-5 days.

Brought mine in 6 days ago. No ETA or ship date on part. No offer to replace even though it is business critical (self-employed). Lost several days of productivity. Totally scrappled - term I coined for screwed by Apple.

Devils advocate. Business critical anything should have backup plans. Any Mac that is business critical should have a counterpart that can be used as a spare in circumstances just as this. Apple DOES offer Joint Venture for business folks, a program that provides loaner Macs should you need one during repair circumstances.

Mine qualifies as "Scrappled" also.

I expected better since I've always had stellar experiences over many years with Apple computers. However now we're firmly entrenched in the iOS Era, profits, profits, profits, are Apple's new priorities.

My tactful, pleasant, clear and concise request for a more rapid resolution was ineffective. Getting angry or being rude is not my style, so I'll ramp up my approach by other means.

Ignoring a customer who's on record (with the invoices to prove it) as having spent tens of thousands on Apples finest gear, is a very poor choice on their part.

I've read that some people are being given replacement computers because of short supply while others are having to wait for the SSD to be ordered and installed (as in my case).

What did Apple do when your 2012 MBA SSD failed?

I've had 2 to fail.

Both got free upgrades to the larger (256gb) card.

i was told (quietly) by the tech that the cards are known to have a bad failure rate, and Apple is trying to make the issue dissapear..

yes, absolutely--buy a small USB drive (or large), install an OS on it, and run from it.. your speed will be quite close.. and if you get a USB3 drive, it'll be almost the same....

$587.95 is a bit beyond "I have to way two weeks for Apple to fix it and want to keep running in the meantime".

A $19 mSATA enclosure and an mSATA SSD would be better idea, as it's $100 less for the 480GB model and twice as fast (and ~$100 for the 128GB model).

Still, a 32GB USB 3.0 stick is enough to stay up and running.

this one won't stick out enough to break off while in your Air.

The kingston would/could be very problematic....

The Kingston drive comes with an extension cord:

Got my '13 MBA back today and so far so great.

According to Disk Utility though it's a 128GB T128E - isn't that the same model of drive as the ones that are afflicted? I'm a bit confused but it seems to be working great. Of course my mind goes back to "did they accidentally put back in the problem drive and forget?". It was restored back to EXACTLY the way I had it, and Time Machine looked like it had been used so I'm assuming it's a new drive and it's just a coinkydink.

Agreed. I also love Apple's gear, which makes it frustrating that they haven't proposed a more swift solution. We'll see, I guess.

Slightly unrelated, but I am worried about them putting in the same type of defective drive. Maybe it's time to purchase the extended service plan.

I buy AppleCare for each of my new Macs without fail. It's even more important in recent times due to Apples declining quality.

ssd failure

I faced ssd failure in mba mid 2012. Bought in indonesia but now it is in Ergo sum, service provider for apple in germany. They told me that eventhough apple will replace ssd for free but now the part is out of stock, so I have to wait until the part is availabe..

I plan on trading my 2012 Air in to Amazon and then buying a new one. Hopefully, I have it back before Black Friday because that's when I plan on upgrading because of the sales. Should be able to get 2013 11" MBA for under $800 on BF.

Thanks for the reminder that Amazon takes trades, I'm going to do the same. It's a great solution, especially since Apple is not doing anything but making us wait.

Do you have your computer or does Apple have it? I know Amazon will take non-working computers but I'm waiting because you get substantially more if the computer works so I figure it's better to wait until the drive is replaced. It may fail again but I don't plan on using it much, if at all, once I get it back before trading it in.

Mac air 11 SSD failure

My less than 10 months old new Mac air stop working two weeks ago.
I took my computer to authorized center and they told me SSD need to get replace. But they did not tell me why.
After two weeks to find out that Apple knew about problem with Toshiba SSD for last few years and still use the part from them to SAVE money for them. I have found post not just here but else where in Internet that many other owners suffer failure of Toshiba SSD. Anyone with Samsung SSD with your notebook are going to be fine. This maybe the reason new Mac air has Samsung SSD and not Toshiba junk. I contact Apple customer relation and they didn't care to do anything but just annoy you to death. I think this is a trend how Apple is going to be. Sell junk and make quick cash. Authorized dealer told me Apple has send the part Wed., but still not here, however when I ask this question to Apple, they couldn't tell me when they shipped it or tracking number or method of shipment. Not only that Apple try to blame on Authorized center that they didn't request part until last Friday. I took my computer last week on Monday and talk to tech on Tuesday and he told me he order the part Tuesday.
What makes me mad is that Apple knew about problem with Toshiba SSD last year yet they still sold faulty product this year. To me this is unethical business practice because those people like who was't aware of anything lost all files in one second. I didn't back up. :(
Not only that, even under the warranty Apple did not fix my computer, yet!
Two weeks.... and still nothing, as if Fedex man are now to blame for slow delivery and I am suppose to believe that.
This is a class action case against APPLE.
1. Apple knew about faulty Toshiba SSD last year.
2. Apple knew about faulty Toshiba SSD that 's why they have now new Mac Air that has Samsung SSD, not only for extend battery times.
3. When you recall faulty product that disable you to use the product you fix them right away, but Apple did not purchase enough Samsung SSD part to even handle recall and so many customers are with no computer to work with.

I have seen many class action case in my life, if any lawyer want to do this, this will make him or her famous, because I know this will win the case.

Those who is getting new SSD, make sure you get Samsung SSD, other wise another Toshiba SSD will fail. Toshiba didn't seem to fix their SSD because this problem has been around for past two three years. I also read that early Mac air had Samsung SSD so they are not affected but when Apple decide to make more money they use Toshiba SSD on just Mac Air. This is why Mac pro is not affected, they have Samsung SSD.

I am disappointed with Apple authorized center, because they did not explain about Toshiba SSD and only thing they told me was a bad batch problem..... try to hide the truth?
Well, I got enough information on the web by reading so now I know what happen and this is all Apple's fault selling faulty products.

I'm just hoping I'll be alright. Mine hasn't failed yet. *knock on wood*

Seriously, I'd buy a new SSD and force Apple to repay me if it took longer than a week or two to get the SSD to repair mine. That's not acceptable.

I paid out of pocket 1 month out of my 1 year warranty.

After they posted their notice, I called Apple and they refunded my CC.

I got mine back today, six days after dropping it off at an AASP. They had to order in the new SSD and gave an ETA of 2 days. I chased them up to see what the delay was this morning and was told they were expecting the drive today... sure enough it was ready for pick up this afternoon.
