i5 was showing much more battery left at the same time with the same tasks but I think it is getting better now, regarding speed:

Resuming vmware fusion windows 7 to home screen:

i5/4gb: 23.46 seconds

i7/8gb: 7:57 seconds

I wonder if the ram plays any factor or there is indeed a big difference in processors.

That will be the RAM difference.

Since we're all 11-inch fans, I figured I'd mention: I don't really like the 13-inch. I went to play around with one at the Apple Store yesterday and it just felt off for some reason. Maybe that's just because I'm used to seeing the 11-inch model.

Thanks! before I jump into the pool I want to share the battery status screen :)

6:16PM browsing around, mail, safari and airplay radio to Apple TV, showing 14(?) hours and battery 92% full.

Update:

8:48PM light browsing and e-mail all evening and it is showing 86% 10 hours left.

Update:

11:12PM and I'm at 74% and 7:04 hr left

Update

I've been browsing, working an replying customer emails, Twitter, Screen sharing and about 12 tabs open this morning.

The new readings are 6:41 hrs left on my second day of using it on battery power, I'll attach to a 27' Thunderbolt display soon and report back.

Update

Ok, now I've been working for two hours doing heavy lifting, Vmware fusion, Chrome, Safari, mail, Photoshop CS3, ScreenSharing and attached to a Thunderbolt 27' and there is about 1:30 hrs left (as a reminder I went on battery yesterday at 2PM)

Update

Last update on the battery, 12PM and I've been working non stop attached to a Thunderbolt 27' display

Conclusion

Pretty good for the little 11" Air, 22 hours without charging (sleeping on/off) of real world usage, browsing, safari, youtube, mail, some airplay, about 10 minutes of FaceTime and today heavy work for almost 4 1/2 hours.

Someone's using the Mavericks beta
;)

My issue with the 13" as I have a MBP 2011 too and all my previous models were 13" is that after a while they will end up on my desktop acting more as a regular desktop computer attached to a monitor than a laptop.

The 11" is a joy to carry around and use while outside your office, on the road, around your house, hotels, etc.

And luckily the 11-inch models aren't crippled anymore, aside from the SD slot.

13" i7 8mb 512 ram - I have everything going - screen full brightness/wifi/bluetooth and a thunderbolt ethernet on while i transfer stuff over from my old laptop.

I'm showing 4:15 estimated at 100% charge .... BUT this could be due to a lot of things - some spotlight indexing going on and things like that - just using the MBA for an hour now ... so I'll wait and see after I get all the transferring done and the thunderbolt off.

Thanks but I think you wan to consider moving the results to the 13" thread as batteries are different for both laptops.

Any early thoughts on which machine you're gonna keep?

The devil in me tells me to spend the cash and go for ultimate but the little base model runs so well, I've worked all day of the base model while testing the i7.

Based on what I'm hearing, I'm having bad feelings about the i7 version when it comes to battery/heat/fan.

So far it's been quite now after the initial setup, definitely is faster than the i5 but you need to remember that the i7 machine have 8gb too, it can be tricky, battery still at 63%

I might order an i5/8GB/256. Sounds like the sweet spot.

Update: Wow I just realized we are talking in two different threads. I thought it was a different person. Funny.

lol yes I see that now too :D

I' seeing other people with lower readings on the i7 for the 13" too.

The issue is that all the online reviews have the i5, nobody got any i7 to review and compare.

I think i5/8gb/256 is perfect, 8gb will give you plenty of ram for multitasking and the battery life on the i5 I'm testing is great.

I'm still testing the i7 but I think I'll save $450 but downgrading to i5 and 256ssd instead of 512ssd

I-7 battery ? heat ?

I have been constantly checking this thread to read about the BATTERY LIFE/HEATING issue for i7 11' 2013 air....i have been actively searching the web and have heard numerous complaints about 2011 11'inches air I-7 burning people's lap...so ai am thinking twice here before throwing away 1482$ (11' i-7, 256GB Flash, 8GB RAM) inclusive of sales tax

I'm thinking about ordering an i5/8GB/256GB tonight and just returning the i7 after the fact. Do you think the 8GB RAM has affects the heat/battery/fan?

Also, somebody in another thread posted this video of a 13" with the i7 upgrade. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQvJUivX-3s

Oh yes indeed, i think i am with you guys on i5/8GB/256 SSD protocol as well....! let's see if i7 battery life is really pathetic and it is a MACHINE RUNNING ON HOT COALS and AEROPLANE FANS ?

So far I have third degree burn on my lap and just landed in Fiji with the help of the aeroplanes fans but hey, it is a gorgeous place!

Joking aside the i7 is running cool with basic computer use (safari, mail, twitter, calendar, app store, iTunes, etc)

And not aeroplanes in sight yet.

I think I'm gonna go ahead and order an 11" i5/8GB/256. I'm honestly still thinking about going completely stock with 4GB of RAM? Is that crazy?

Not crazy at all, as you know I've been working all day on that same model (i5/4gb/256ssd) attached to a thunderbolt display 27' and this things is very very fast, I have MAMP open, Coda 2, 10 safari tabs, mail, mailplane, iPhoto, iMessage, iTunes, CCSEdit, Pixelmator, etc all at the same time and testing opening Vmware Fusion with a fresh Win 7 install and there are no issues at all.

When I try to open apps on the i7 it is slightly faster but remember that this machine have 8gb of ram so if you add an extra 4gb ($100) to the base model I believe you are going to be very very happy.

I just checked online and if you order now they are showing delivery this friday, that's pretty good!

I want to go stock but something inside is telling me I should probably just go for the 8GB version. But then again, I have a desktop Mac with a ton of power. I don't need an insane portable.

Exactly my thoughts too, I'm getting a maxed out iMac for work in a month or two as soon as they add the Haswell to iMacs and then this little 11 beast will be just to play around while not in the office, plenty of power on any configuration.

How much of effect do you think the extra RAM has on battery/heat? I'm very tempted to go with i5/4GB/256, get it Friday and just be happy.
