How much of effect do you think the extra RAM has on battery/heat? I'm very tempted to go with i5/4GB/256, get it Friday and just be happy.

I think none, a minute or two? no heat at all, probably less than with 4gb.

You can get that model at the store right now, no need to order online

I get a pretty nice discount on Apple's online store which is nice so I'll probably keep buying from there. I think I'll expedite it this time. I want it this week.

Are you getting 4 or 8 gb?

It's tied to my Apple ID, sorry!!

I'm not sure. I've got it in my cart. I think I'm gonna go with 4GB. It just seems right.

I can't seem to make up my mind. Seeing as I do work with Logic Pro, maybe I should just go for the 8GB.

For a secondary computer if you already have a desktop I think is perfect, I may do the same and just stay with the one I have, then of course next year we will open another thread and start all over again

From what you've said, the base model sounds so good. Screw it. I'm gonna get it. I can always return it for an 8GB model if it's pissing me off, but I'm done obsessing. I just need a computer.

DONE!

I ordered an 11" i5/4GB/256. It'll be here on Friday.

That feels so much better. I knew I made the wrong decision with the i7 from the start. We'll see how this one is in a few days! I'll post back.

You knew about the wrong decision but you wanted the most powerful machine in the world only to come to this forum and find out that the battery will be lower, your legs will burn and melt on the couch and you will be flying with the airplane wind tunnel fans.

the i5 saved your life. :p

Hahaha I need those legs!

I really am excited now, though. You think you're gonna keep the base model too?

I was thinking on 8gb but I've setup the machine with everything I need (acting as a desktop replacement) until I get the iMac and it is amazingly fast so I think I'll probably just stay with this one.

Just tried an iMovie export on both machines on a 2 min 1080p and there is a difference of less than two minutes, I'll wait a couple more minutes anytime if I get much more battery life and cooler machine.

So far on all the reviews and forum post I never saw any i7 post with a 100% good experience, some are getting less hours than the i5, others a little hotter, etc.

For "curtoise", what is your decision/leaning toward i5/i7? You've had time with both. Still very curious what you're experiencing between both. i.e. i7 how much warmer during same use as i5 and how much less battery. Thank you very much for all your feedback it's been very helpful/frustrating try to pick one :)

Yeah that's why I went with something less. When you think about it, Apple sells the machines stock with only 4GB of RAM and an i5. These machines are made to run on these specs. Anything otherwise is most likely going to have tradeoffs. So I'll take it the way it's intended. Seems like it runs incredibly anyway.

That's right, Apple will not put on display on their stores a machine that will not open iMovie fast, or iPhoto lagging or whatever.

The demo machines in stores are made to be tested by everybody with a million of different scenarios, they have to be good.

That's why even if I've ordered an ultimate model like you did I went to the store and picked up a base model, I needed to know how good or bad the machine is, I cannot just spend the money because the upgrades are there.

With the savings I'll get the new Airport TC with the new wifi ac and I still have money for a beer(s) ;)

The i7 is about $600 warmer

If you are planning on this to be your main workstation to edit Star Wars 37 with Final Cut get the ultimate.

If this will be your notebook complimentary computer, any base model will do and even as a web designer - developer desktop replacement will do too (I'm doing it temporarily).

If you are going to upgrade next year to the 48 hours battery Macbook Air, get the base model.

I surely won't be upgrading next year. But I also have a specced out Mac mini that's been doing nothing but excellent work for the past two years.

No upgrading next year? C'mon I need a forum buddy

You will upgrade my young Padawan, next MBA will be magicalutionary.

I keep my Apple things for at least two years. :p

But don't worry. This year is my iPhone and iPad upgrade year. So when those come around you know who to talk to!

Been waiting for a week for an actual real life review of battery life & heat difference between the I5 & I7.

Exactly my thoughts. I am equally FRUSTRATED as you are and WAITING DESPERATELY For a REAL WORLD DETAILED REVIEW of I-7....

So far i have been sold out on the COOLER i-5 and better battery life of i-5 along with a 8GB RAM and 512 SSD :)

I just read this on Cnet:

I took my 13" macbook air with i7 and 8gb of ram to work today. I have the firewall enabled. I have disk encryption enabled. I have five different background processes pulling data. I have mail checking once a minute. I had the screen at 60 percent brightness. I worked for 9 hours, didn't use a charger, and when i got home at 5 I had 40 percent battery left. I'm really glad I got this thing.

That's right if he just had those process running but if he was actually working with the machine while those process were running the battery will be much lower.
