Does anyone have this "issue" from the 2011 Airs?
I have it but only like 5mm from the bottom.

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1195183/

Should I be concerned about this? I really doesn't bother me problem with it. I actually thought it was a gradient part of mountain lion but then realised it wasn't there when I inverted colors!

Also, does anyone here a quiet(only heard in a quiet room) creak when they open the lid/screen all the way?

has anyone encountered this? I got LG

So how many different displays are there in the 2013 13-inch Air? AOU, LG and Samsung?

LG guys this one is for u, did on MBA 2012 with LG screen

Most incredible thing.

I was really upset with the LG I just picked up -- until I installed that calibration file. Wow. Why the hell doesn't Apple just ship these things with calibrated displays? My screen looks amazing now.

Now how do I check which SSD I have?

Hate to kick a dead horse, but...

I just picked up a ColorMunki Display and calibrated my 2013 MBA Samsung display. Just thought I'd share if anyone is interested in the .icc file.

Hey, thanks again for the great work with the dm2 profile! It really is wonderful. I do have a request question though, if you'll humor me.

Would it be possible to get a few more of the 20 black boxes in play here without sacrificing too much picture quality? I'm currently only able to make out the last five. I've tried just about every custom calibration in existence for the LG displays and yours in BY FAR the best looking to my eyeballs... but many of the others seem to do better on that testing website (with your "dm2" profile I don't start seeing colors until #3-#4 on the contrast test).

I guess my eyes just don't like color accuracy? LOL! :D

Anyway, do you think you might take another crack at this? I'd be willing to throw a few bucks your way (via PayPal gift) for the trouble. I bought my MBA on Craigslist ($825 brand new, holy crap) so I can't return it and try for the Samsung display. Your dm2 calibration has been a lifesaver.

Either way, thanks!

In my opinion it is a bad user experience having to deal with the display panel/hard drive version of russian roulette and thus managing color profiles, keeping an eye on increased power consumption and comparing hard drive speeds/colors with seemingly identical models, finding them to be superior or inferior. I myself ordered a new MacBook Air and had a bummer when I realized that i got an LG screen. Working with graphics and having a GF with an identical but Samsung-paneled MBA, I can really see the difference, and color saturation means a lot if you don't want your screen to look like last decade's television.
The LG screen is not essentially bad, it is just not as good as the Samsung's. Those are still first world problems.

And yes, I swapped it online for a new model, but if that's another LG, I just take it as a sign from the universe to let me have it. ^.^

PM me as a reminder to send you my calibration, you might like it. I just don't have my MBA at work at the moment. The one I have actually shows more of the boxes than the stock calibration but somehow able to have more contrast.

Not sure these threads are a great help to people, as they read one screen is better than another and then are generally unhappy when they actually have a really great machine.

That said, I was interested to see what was in my new MBA :D and have a LG screen and Samsung SSD.

I think the calibration of any screen is a must, but it's very much a personal preference. I've downloaded a few of the profiles in this thread, which are better than the default settings, but I've settled on my own. Given it only takes 5-10 minutes to calibrate, everyone should do the same.

Still very happy with my new flying machine :apple:

These threads ARE helpful to anyone who cares about their machines not being the same like others who paid exactly the same and got a better screen/hard drive. There ARE differences in speed and color display, and customers should be able to know what is inside BEFORE they buy it, and not afterwards.
Also, playing with profiles may influence the battery's performance, as has already been observed - which may not be the preferable option to go with.

There also have been rumors about Apple reducing the use of LG displays, one may wonder why.

I guess it all depends 'who' is saying one component is better than another, and if everyone actually agrees. I've read nothing that definitively states the Samsung panel is better than the LG panel, or that one make of SSD is better or more reliable than another.

Well, it is not without reason that Apple just pushed out a firmware update for the new MBAs to test if non-Samsung SSDs fail. AND multiple websites tested the SSDs against each other, resulting in superior performance by the Samsungs.
Also, they retired AUO as a display supplier. Having seen one already I can tell one thing: If you like washed out colors, this is your best choice. Even LG screens look better than them.

And even Apple knows it. You can check the Apple Store MBAs, they all got Samsung panels.

I really see the difference between lg and samsung. my 2012 had an lg. it seemed fine to me all the year i was using it. then I had a problem with my camera so they replaced the entire screen. now its a samsung. the difference is night and day. the screen difference is the first thing I noticed when I turned it on. the samsung is light years better.

Try this one. This looks the best on my LG screen. It actually makes the screen sharper and better contrast and shows more boxes in that test. I got this from one of the users here that posted it. Sorry If I don't remember the original owner.

Is it me or the default calibration on Mavericks on LCD screen is improved? Can any calibration experts with this set up confirm? Thanks!

I thought that my 2013MBA screen looked crisper on boot to mavericks too.

I must agree on this. It is now really close to the Samsung screen, and close enough for me. I guess I can keep my LG now since the basic profile will do. Good job by Apple here now.

The LG screen was never the issue as people made it to be. I think it was more of the calibration of the LG. It just needs proper calibration. Both screens have their strengths and weaknesses once properly calibrated so you can't really say which is better. The idea of continually returning a mba in hopes of getting a samsung is so ridiculous.

Well, you can't blame people to not believe in LG as there have been several complaints about LG display problems, such as ghosting. There IS a reason why LG had it but not Samsung, and it needs no further discussion. You really can't blame people that they lose their trust in brands which do not do QA, and in these days good QA seems more and more rare.

But even though I think the standard profile comes close, it is still not the same. I only said that I consider this a point where I do not feel the need to chase after a Samsung panel this much, but there is still a difference, like you said. My opinion is that Apple should either close the gap by choosing one exclusive supplier or have QA take a look which at least is on par with customer experience. Or have the customer choose the panel like other internal upgrades... I think there are plenty here who would have paid extra for a guaranteed Samsung panel inside.

Samsung vs LG Display GUI App

Hi all,

I recently purchased a Macbook Air and found that applying a colour profile did wonders for my LG display.

If it helps anyone, I created a native OS X app that should pull the information out for you and determine whether your screen is LG or Samsung. :)

Currently works on the basis that if the prefix is LP then its LG, otherwise its a Samsung, let me know if there's any problems!

i love it how people like or hate their displays based on RANDOM OTHER PEOPLE'S THOUGHTS over the internet.

look at your display. you like it? if not, calibrate it. still dont like it? return it.

Best comment !

I have had Samsung displays in previous MBA's. I liked their color vibrancy but also felt it was way too *blue* to be true.

I just opened a brand new 2013 MBA (this is a replacement for the one I returned which had a Samsung screen but horrible flickering when scrolling) and got a LG screen. Since I am used to Samsung bluish tinted screens.. I thought the color on this MBA was dull. But on closer inspection its great. Not over saturated. I will put it through its paces and see how I feel later on.

They both look fine. Just for people reading this who are going to spend more time in the terminal trying to figure out what display they have than enjoying their computer.

For those with LG displays that are calibrating the hell outta their machines.. and end up frustrated that they still can't get dark colors and have a bit of washed out colors.....

I just found out that you have to set your target gamma to 2.2 and not the default(native). Makes a world of difference...

Checkout this profile if you are curious.

A little dark.
