Got goosebumps watching Mariano Rivera walk to the mound in his last ASG. While from a Red Sox fan perspective I'm glad he's riding off into the sunset, he's not only the best closer ever, he's one of the good ones.

And this is just about the only time I can cheer for him. Lock it down so the Sox can have homefield! :D

Same here. That was hard to fathom. He's on his way out and the way he has been so reliable it seemed like he would have lasted forever. I can't get over his age because he looks the same as ten years ago. Legend.

The Rays are ridiculously hot though. 60-40 and we can't shake 'em. What a pleasant surprise this season has been, though. If Buchholz can get healthy, we might make some noise. And this team is so much more pleasant and likable since dumping Crawford and company and picking up some good guys.

Baltimore is not going away quietly either. The Yankees needed to win last night to stay in the division, it is going to be a hard week playing Texas and Tampa. How healthy is Buchholz, a visit to Dr Andrews is never good. He seems to be Doctor death to baseball seasons.

We'll see I suppose. The scuttlebutt around Fenway is that it could be mental. He was examined by team doctors who found his shoulder and range of motion to be fine. The thought is if he gets a clean bill of health from Dr. Andrews he'll be confident in the integrity of his shoulder. But I'd prefer he not pitch if he's not sure or if there's any discomfort. He's too important to risk.

I think the Sox will pick up one or two arms at the trade deadline.

Could you have gotten a worse head case than AJ Burnett if his injury is 100% mental?

Braun is suspended for the remainder of the season without pay.

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/9...aukee-brewers-suspended-remainder-2013-season
Major League Baseball has suspended Milwaukee Brewers slugger Ryan Braun without pay for the remainder of the 2013 season.

Braun will not contest the suspension which was meted out for "violations of the Basic Agreement and its Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program," according to a statement released by MLB.

"As I have acknowledged in the past, I am not perfect," Braun said in the statement. "I realize now that I have made some mistakes. I am willing to accept the consequences of those actions. This situation has taken a toll on me and my entire family, and it is has been a distraction to my teammates and the Brewers organization.

"I am very grateful for the support I have received from players, ownership and the fans in Milwaukee and around the country. Finally, I wish to apologize to anyone I may have disappointed -- all of the baseball fans especially those in Milwaukee, the great Brewers organization, and my teammates. I am glad to have this matter behind me once and for all, and I cannot wait to get back to the game I love."

The suspension totals the final 65 games of the Brewers' season and any potential postseason games this year.

Good. He deserves the punishment and the embarrassment of getting caught in all of his lies.

Congratulations on taking 2/3 from the Tampa Yankees. ;)

At least we beat your "ace". It should actually be kind of embarrassing for you...

Excuses, excuses - when you sign a flotilla of players on the wrong side of 35, you can't act surprised when they collectively bankrupt the Yankees HMO.

And Sabathia is your ace, no? Let me break out my pinstriped violin. ;)

Sabathia hasn't been our ace in years!

Kuroda has actually been the man for 2 years in a row now. He's also the guy who beat your ace. Coincidence?? ;)

And yes, old guys get injured. And this year so did the young guys. After Nix went down we were literally on our FOURTH shortstop. And a few were flukes-Grandy and Tex both getting derailed by being hit didn't help.

It's just been one of those years. Even healthy, there were no expectations for a championship this year-even coming off of an ALCS appearance. Next few years will be about shedding salary and looking at the young guys. Our 5 championships were built from within and hopefully they'll get to that place again.

The only way we shred salary is if our star third baseman murders a few people.

With the whole Braun situation, I feel really bad for the people who Braun blamed before that lost their jobs. They should get compensated for being lied about. It won't happen, though.

Since this is his second offense Braun should be getting 150 games to make up for the 50 he didn't serve last time.

To be fair, it hasn't seemed to save the Patriots any money. ;)

I probably should have said, shred dead weight.

I can't imagine any scenario which has A-Rod ever putting on the pinstripes again.
I think league rules hurt the Patriots. I wonder what clauses are in the A-Rod contract that they can void it. I think prison is the only thing.

Well, the sample collector did violate protocol by keeping the urine sample at his house over the weekend (ew). It's hard to argue he was wronged - he's the one that opened the door to Braun's defense. It was a crap loophole that should have been avoided.

I am conflicted on the issue of steroids. I feel like we're kidding ourselves by thinking they're not completely prevalent, on the other hand, it'd be nice if everyone just stayed away from it altogether.

I'm of the stance that steroids and PEDs should be allowed altogether. It's stupid to think they don't exist in every sport more prevalently than people think. Steroids have been around since the late 40's. They became popular in gyms, especially on the west coast, as early as the 60's. It's stupid to think only as recently as the 90's professional athletes have started using them.

The olympics, NFL, NBA, MLB, the Tour de France, etc. are all tainted with PEDs and steroids. Armstrong, McGwire, Clemens, Braun, etc. are just scapegoats for people to point and say," HEY! HEY! We caught the people using them! Our sport is clean now!"

People weren't throwing a bitchfit during the homerun race. They loved it and ate it up although it was pretty common knowledge that baseball players all looked like they belonged in the WWE. People only hate steroids and such since ESPN told them to. ESPN wants to stir up as much controversy possible to make money.

I'm not familar with this biogenesis technology they are using now, though. Doesn't it just reverse aging of muscle tissue and ligament cells? What's wrong with that? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Dustin Pedroia and Red Sox have agreed in principle on extension. Starts in 2015 goes to '21. Comes down to approximately 7 years for $100 million. Pedroia is signed for $10 million and $11 million for '13 and '14 respectively.

AAV is $13.8 million.

Absurdly good deal for the Red Sox, and great security for Pedroia. Really love that guy. He took a hometown discount deal in 2008 as well.

I'm in this camp. I feel that they should be fully allowed in all of the "non contact" sports. Baseball, basketball, cycling, whatever. I can see it becoming a legitimate hazard being allowed in football, hockey, sports like that. People enjoy watching sports where the best athletes in the world are playing at their absolute maximum physical capacity. PEDs would allow for that. If they are allowed league wide, it creates a level playing field.

And people that are still of the mindset that "steroids" turn people into rage filled psychos, shrink your genitals, and all of the other ********* misconceptions are WAY behind on the times and grossly misinformed. They CAN cause those reactions if misused/abused, the same way cheeseburgers can make you fat if abused. If administered correctly and in proper doses, cycled on and off correctly, offset with the proper cycle assist and post cycle compounds, steroids can be perfectly safe and enhance a user's body and overall well being in a multitude of ways.

This. Why do people keep saying Braun owes that sample collector an apology? He didn't follow protocol. He didn't perform his job correctly. It was pointed out and proven. Whether Braun's test was positive or not doesn't change the fact that the guy didn't perform his job as he was supposed to.

Agreed. It should have been much longer. It is a shame that MLB worked out a deal with Braun.

ESPN.com said:
After MLB's original meeting with Braun on June 29, at which he refused to answer questions about Biogenesis, he requested a second meeting, a source familiar with the discussions told T.J. Quinn of ESPN's "Outside The Lines." Braun, after realizing the significance of the evidence against him from questions in the first meeting, decided to meet again to strike a deal that would limit his suspension to this season, according to the source.

ARod facing lifetime ban.... Please MLB have the guts to do it.....

http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2013/07...rodriguez-is-looking-to-make-a-deal-with-mlb/

As much as I don't like him, that's ridiculous. It seems they're picking on low hanging fruit. It's easy because everybody hates him.

Why so harsh for him? And not for Braun who lied to EVERYONE after he got caught. Or for McGwire? Manny? Ortiz? Pettitte?

Bartolo Colon is having a cy young season. What about him?

Yeah, I actually agree with Moyank on this one. You just want him banned for life so the Yankees don't have to pay him. If he were a lower paid guy on the Reds or something, it'd be a different story. He doesn't deserve a lifetime ban compared to what other players are getting and have gotten.

I hate him too, as you well know, but the piling on is a bit much. Braun gets 65 games for his sanctimonious act and 2nd positive test, and A-Rod gets life? That's utterly absurd. People just hate A-Rod (understandable), but he shouldn't be held to a harsher set of punishments.

150 games. Yankees do everything they can to make sure he never plays again. He's a disgrace.
