Mariano Rivera to announce at a press conference on Saturday that he will retire after 2013.![]()
I don't think anyone is surprised - but it's certainly still difficult to hear.
I'm glad he'll get a chance to get honored at all of the visiting parks this season. From day one he was a class act and that hasn't changed.
It's been an honor to watch him on a regular basis for the last 17 years. He's the best closer of all time and 6 years from now he'll be a first ballot Hall of Famer.
I'm debating if I should make the drive to GMS field on Saturday to go see his spring debut. It might be the only chance I will have to see a Yankees game this year, plus the only guaranteed chance to see Mo pitch.
By that time A-Rod should be juiced up and ready to go.I'm lucky. The Yankees are coming to play the Astros the last series of the season. I complained about waiting so long, but now I'm glad I'll be able to see his last regular season games. Hopefully he gets 3 saves.![]()
The what now?how about that brawl between Canada and Mexico in the WBC? that was awesome haha.
You can tell all those canadian boys probably played a little hockey when they were kids too...![]()
The World Baseball Classic is the stupidest thing ever and should have never been thought of. What better way to injure players before the season even starts for a meaningless tournament. This brawl is just another example of poor implementation.
Spring training is long for the pitchers to get in shape. The hitters don't need as much time. It is extra long this year because of the WBC.I don't see how playing in a WBC game carries any more risk of injury than playing in a spring training game...
That is, unless you intentionally hit a batter on a team full of hockey players.
It's not like a brawl like this happens all the time though. Players are just as likely to get hurt in training camp, playing a grapefruit league game, or shagging fly balls in the outfield during warmups.
Baseball's spring training is too dragged out anyways. Something to break it up and have a little bit of fun once every three years isn't a bad thing.
So Santana is done for the year. Bet the Mets wish they resigned Dickey.
Everyone pissed and moaned when the Yankees didn't trade for him and instead got the "overweight" Sabathia. What awful, awful luck for him. If it's the tear they think it is, he may be done for more than the year. I've always respected him, even when he was shutting us down on the Twins, and I just feel so bad for him. Tough luck for a class guy.

I'm cautious on CC. He wasn't as dominant as he usually is last year. He wasn't bad, but I hope it is just a "down" year than a sign of his workload starting to catch up to him.
I'm less concerned with our pitching as I am that Vernon Wells, Lyle Overbay, Francisco Cervelli and Eduardo Nunez are going to be in the starting lineup.![]()
Cervelli has returned to his 2009/2010( can't remember which) defensive form. His offense isn't great, but he should get the job done defensively. He's pretty much the opposite of Posada. Posada great offensively, but horrible defensively.
It's going to be a rough year, this will be a fight for 4th place. This could be said about many members of the team.
Though, I'm curious to see how they'll take advantage of all the speed (Gardner, Ichiro, Nunez) and start moving runners around. Their complete inability to do that has killed them in the playoffs the last few years. And frankly, it's annoying to watch.

If Toronto is as advertised they might run away with the division quick. Injuries even this early might put us too far behind. The Rays are going to be in there and Baltimore is not going away. The 2 weak links are the Yankees and Red Sox. Jeter is a question mark, Tex is out for a month and Granderson won't be back until May.It's a long season. Who knows what the injury situation with the other teams will be. If we can pitch fairly decently, and have a strong pen that can make it a 6 inning game, we have a fighting chance.
I'd rather see the injuries at the beginning of the year than in August/September.
