The Cardinals will be tough to get by and the Dodgers, if they get there, could be the most talented team in the MLB. The Pirates, on the other hand, are on a Cinderella run and this represents a long time coming so they have the most momentum of all the teams.
The Tigers, well, are still the team that went to WS last year and it won't surprise me if they go all the way this year. The Red Sox have the best record. The A's just won't die and they are my sentimental favorite for this whole postseason. If they get past Detroit, I can't see them beating the Red Sox.
It's anyone's series this year and nobody is completely dominant. If you could put Longoria, Kershaw, Cabrera, Verlander, and Puig all on one team, then yeah you can roll all over the rest. The talent is spread out this time and there's no Yankee type dynasty in this current era of baseball. If the championship series goes to seven and the WS to seven then either the Cardinals or the A's are the best teams out there. If any game is to be won as a walk off then the A's are king. I want the A's but I doubt they can get past a well rounded team like Boston if they make it to ALCS. The Red Sox don't have to rely on some heroic play from any one star like Detroit's Verlander or Cabrera and can do it will steady production from everybody (much like my 2010 and 2012 SF Giants). In any seven game series, steadiness wins over any high profile plays. It's the philosophy of a "team" versus a group of guys with a few huge stars.
If Detroit wins it all, you will get endless commercials with Verlander, Cabrera, and Fielder pushing every known product for huge endorsements. But if Boston wins, they will (like SF) hunker down and start thinking about next year. I also see the A's as a team that can win, drink champagne for a few minutes, and get to thinking about next year. There's no coincidence that Boston tried to recruit the A's Billy Beane. For professional players, baseball is a 24/7/365 thing if you are doing it right being just because it's a few hundred steady year to year players in a field of millions who grew up playing the sport in their youth. This is a total commitment unlike any other American sport and yet it still has more career ending injuries than the NFL. You have to be 100% percent or it's a no go! It's a privilege that can't be forgotten and there's a reason they get paid what they get paid. A certain selfless team with consistent slightly above average players and team work ethic is what will build a baseball dynasty, not a few huge stars that richer teams can pluck right at their peak. It's really a continuation of not just the oldest American sport, but of a nation's philosophy and religion (which baseball is to some). While I love many other sports, baseball is more than just a sport and while it could be nothing more than a long season of 162 games and a busy postseason, the depth of this sport has somehow stuck.
