he he he. yeah i remeber those days.

i was for the Orioles in that WS and always for anyone who played against the steelers.

i always hated those cake hats the pirates wore. lol.

I love Pop though...

Is brian wilson an integral part of the Dodgers rotation/pen? i haven't seen enough of them to know. i can't see myself watching too much if they make it.

It wasn't a sure thing he would make postseason but he has a win in NLDS behind him. He still could get it up at 95mph sometimes.

Hey, your guy Sonny got the hot seat tomorrow, and over Colon!

I guess Detroit is the only team remaining that could be stretched as an underdog considering the three other teams...... But, still Detroit has become a powerhouse as well now.....

Bos v. Det
LA v. Stl

Good matchups.

Boston in 7, LA in 7..?

If LA holds up with great playing late in season through NLCS and WS then they are the ones to beat. If nobody steps up to the plate (or mound) and pulls off a team effort then Boston or St. Louis are the teams to beat.

Gone are the days where you will see a person hit 3 homers in a game or 8 homers in a WS. It's not the type of theme that has played all season. Like most seasons, it will be a pitching battle and low scoring all around with who is left. I expect a record number of shutouts and all four teams have lights out pitchers like Verlander or Kershaw peaking at the right time. It may not be exciting for fans of other teams to watch but any WS or championship series victory is a victory just as much.

If Boston pulls this off it will be 3 rings in 10 years and arguably a true dynasty for the city that has lately been the king of dynasties and rings, or at the very least a productive decade for David Ortiz with two WS and all time Red Sox home run record in 2006. It would be a great way to ride off into the sunset for a great player with those accolades plus 2000 plus hits and 431 home runs.

If St. Louis pulls this off, yawn, since they have more WS than anybody but Yankees and won here just two years ago. You can never count them out and they receive the indestructible cockroach moniker more deservedly than even the SF Giants.

If LA wins, it would have been a long time in the making but since they are by far the best when they are on, it's theirs to lose and many will root against them just for that. Kershaw's overall ERA is just plain stupid.

If Detroit wins, even though they faced my team last year in WS, I will be happy for them because it can't be that fun to be swept like that. It's a chance for them to make something out of the big stars they have on their team. I have a feeling they will be the overall favorite and no doubt the biggest chance for endorsements. Other than A's and Giants players doing commercials in the Bay Area, the only other players I see on national tv plugging products are either from Yankees or Tigers. It's not a new thing, either, and they are (for lack of a better name), true Hollywood teams. If Detroit wins, I can see Tom Selleck spinning this into a huge photo op. They are the showtime team here even though LA is owned by Magic Johnson, who has been largely unable to spread his magic of PR to the team. The only bright spot for national attention for LA has been the addition of Brian Wilson, who knows that PR is just as important as playing well. If LA wins and Brian is the last to pitch, then watch out! No matter what any other player did this year, the postseason of 2013 will belong to him with an LA win.

We really have to revisit the word, "dynasty"...3 in 10 years (whether it's the Red Sox, Yankees, or any other team) is not a dynasty.

With free agency and crazy payrolls, I'm not sure we'll see another true "dynasty". Also the additional round of playoffs (1 game + Wild card series) makes it even harder. Gone are the days the team just had to win their division or make it through one series before reaching the World Series. It's just harder to get on top and stay there. The Tigers have done a heck of a job getting to the ALCS and to the WS in the last few years but haven't been able to finish. And they have a great starting staff and a great lineup. One bad week and it's all meaningless.

That said I'm rooting for the Dodgers all the way - it's time for Donnie Baseball to finally get his ring.

In the ALCS, I can't stand either team, but I'm sticking with my anyteambuttheredsox philosophy.

I will be rooting for the AL, even if it means rooting for the Red Sox in the WS. I hope the Tigers win it though.

I don't care about Donnie baseball since I wasn't around when he played for the Yankees. So whatever for the Dodgers. But, I am rooting for them in the NLCS. Anybody, but the Cardinals. :D

Why would you root for the Red Sox over Mattingly? You might as well get an Ortiz jersey.

If you want to have a really strict version of the term dynasty, then it has to be the Yankees 1996-2000s. That type of thing happened before that with Mantle, DiMaggio, Ford, Ruth, Yogi, etc but since those 90s-00s Yankees, there has not been anything remotely close. It's in the strictest of those definitions that a sport dynasty has to win at least four in a ten year period (70s Steelers, 80s Niners, and freakin' Yankees all over the place).

Yes, I rooted against them every pitch but going four out of five was something amazing to watch like a force of nature. There's nothing recently in hockey, basketball or football that compares in such a dominant fashion and this book mentions the team's rise and fall as a dynasty:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Night_of_the_Yankee_Dynasty

That being said, with Boston's bad luck in postseason, pre-2004, I would say that the Red Sox have killed any curse that existed and put themselves into contention. It was also a sure thing that if they made it far, they would always choke in a big way. If they falter these days, it's not a choke like the curse ridden team of eight decades.

Why would you root for the Red Sox over Mattingly? You might as well get an Ortiz jersey.

Because I don't associate with him because I was only like 5 years old when he retired. All I know is he was one the big faces of the Yankees. Not enough reason to root for him, IMHO.

Yes....this seems very suspect.

Maybe I'm just old fashioned - but if you're a real Yankees fan, there is no scenario where you will root for the Red Sox. None.

Especially over a legend!!

Detroit limped into the playoffs, so while they're the most vulnerable, they also have an edge with their starters and having been there before.

Detroit in 7, LA in 6?

I'll take LA in 7, Boston in 6. I just don't see a half broken Cabrera and a failing supporting cast providing enough offense for the Tigers to have a realistic chance at winning. I would love to be proven wrong.

Mattingly was the reason me and many others of my generation became Yankee fans. This is his chance to finally get a WS ring that has eluded him his whole career.

The scenario is the AL is better than the NL. Even if the AL is represented by the Red Sox, I will root for them since they are an AL team. Not because I want the Red Sox to win.

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't consider it a dynasty if the Red Sox won (knock on wood). It really needs to be like 3 or more out of 4 or 5 years. Which is fine, dynasties are annoying except for when it's your team. Baseball is the worst sport for parity, imo, so it's better not to have them.

That said, I am thoroughly enjoying watching Yankees fans argue over rooting against the Red Sox in the playoffs. :D Here's a reason you should root for the Sox: it would make me unendingly happy.

I had to get a manicure this morning to stop myself from resuming an old, terrible habit of biting my nails during Red Sox playoff games. I will be happy if the Red Sox win when it's all said and done, but I get so tense and nervous during games it's hard to truly "enjoy" them. Good luck, Tigers fans. I'll be rooting for whoever comes out of the AL, and hoping the Dodgers dispense with the Cardinals and their entitled fans.

I don't really get this. He's not a player, he's managing a collection of high priced stars. Moral victory, I guess.

Wow, really?

Being a Giants and A's fan, I should then really hate the Dodgers but I don't. If a team I like doesn't get into the playoffs, then I just move on and root for next favorite teams.

I tend to like individual players and with such cross pollination, it doesn't make sense to hate teams. LA has Uribe and Wilson, important parts of what made SF so great. SF initially returned to greatness after decades of wallowing in mediocrity when former LA player Dusty Baker rewrote the rules on how to take a bunch of bay area misfits and turn them into a team. The pride of the Giants has never faltered since Dusty put us back into good form and one worthy of a team that used to have Willie Mays wear orange and black.

When I think of Dusty Baker, I see a competent and well loved skipper wearing a Giants uniform, not a Dodger blue player with a fancy blue diamond World Series ring.

For the first time in 10 years I am not stressed about October. It is nice to watch the games and not live on every pitch. Of course it would be a happier month when the Red Sox are knocked out of it.:D
