The halfpipe was in terrible condition for the mens event yesterday, they said thats why shawn white didn't win but its not like anyone else has a different halfpipe to use. The 15 year old kid from japan surprised me how good he was, new shawn white?

That halfpipe was embarrassingly bad. Considering the fact that Shaun White's not-clean landings on his 2nd run in the finals both were caused by the garbage slush build up at the bottom of the pipe, if it was a good pipe and not that trash, he may have won. I feel even more for Davis and Bretz from the US, both fell on both their runs due to the garbage snow conditions.

However, like you said, they all compete in the same pipe, and i-pod was phenomenal yesterday. He's been around for a long time and he's always right in the contest, and he definitely deserved the gold. You could see even thoug Shaun White was clearly disappointed, he was definitely happy for i-pod. It seems the athletes understand it happens and you can't win it all every time more than the fans do.

Anyone watching Sweden vs Czech Republic in hockey right now? Sweden is dominating and the Czech coaching staff should be fired. Not even putting their best players out there/in the right positions to succeed.

I can see Sweden winning the gold medal. Everyone's been talking about Canada, Russia, and USA, but Sweden has the most well-rounded team. They're stacked at every position.

avoid espn, yesterday at my work they just announce olympic stories without any warning, letting me know that shawn white didn't place before i even got to watch. i might wake up to watch the mens hockey, 6:30 isn't too bad.

why shouldn't they? it's NBC's fault they are not showing the events live.
they could show every single event in full via their various cable channels if they wanted to, then one could watch them live or decide to tape and watch them later as they like.
and in prime time that can have an organized highlights show (basically like it is now).
but to expect that competitors don't broadcast results is disingenuous.

on a related note, is anyone watching some of the events on the NBC olympics website?

i know i could watch it on my iPad at home using their app, although the way it is covered is poor: how hard can it be to have a semi-decent commentary?
i watched (delayed) the half pipe on it with my kids and the guy commenting it was like
"Oh, nice run! good move there. this could be good score, let's see what the judges think of it..."
i mean literally, those are actual quotes. the guy obviously didn't have the vaguest idea of what was going on, except for the names of the athletes and -sometimes- their ages or some other trivial info he was reading off a sheet. absolutely no clue about the sport, what tricks they were doing, if it was hard or easy, etc. I could have done a better job at it. my son was literally rolling on the floor laughing.

anyways, i CAN NOT watch anything on my laptop through their website.
i get the connection , it 'approves" me (another irritating NBC quirk), it initializes and then it goes black.

i tried some troubleshooting, but nothing seems to fix it. i am running macOS 10.9.1, safari 7.0.1, Flash 12.0.0.44. and the setup work on other websites for flash content. anyone else experiencing problems? fixes?

You would think they would give fair warning as most people wait to watch them.

On a side note - does anyone know where there is a good quality picture of the artwork that is behind the bench in the ice rink where the figure skaters get their scores? It's a takeoff on the diamond artwork that is blue, white and silver. I would love to have this as the background for my iphone.

The artwork to the left of the athletes on the wall is what I am referring to.

Actually Shawn had two incidents in his second run. He sat down on one of his early tricks and it was right at the top of the Pipe not the bottom. His knees just bucked on his landing for the last trick. He landed it well but I think his injuries just caught up with him.

The US women came 1,3 and 4th today so they obviously did not have a problem with the Pipe.

Most stations tell you they are about to broadcast Olympic results so you can turn away if you don't want to know.

I love the Olympics, and the Winter Olympics is no different. It's great to watch a few sports I would rarely ever see (ice hockey and speed skating have been my favourite so far).

I'm glad Team GB are off the mark with Jenny Jones' bronze, though the commentary was absolutely abysmal throughout that event. Hopefully we have more medals to come - it's the skeleton tomorrow, an event we traditionally do well in.

skeleton is cool. i can't decide who are the craziest ones, them or the luge people :D

I thought the double luge was the craziest! Who on earth would choose to be in a double luge team...

Saw brief highlights of the men's races, oddly didn't see a Russian team. Have they been banned by Putin from entering due to the, ahem, intimate nature of the double luge...?!

being the guy on the bottom would be very scary, i wonder if they are communicating while going down.

I'm enjoying the Winter Olympics. Curling is a fun game to watch although to be honest I don't see it as a sport. My favorite events is the Luge, Skeleton, Speed Skating, Figure Skating, and Hockey.

Canada and Norway tied after 1 period. Canada looks soft. Need less of Crosby/Kunitz/Carter/Nash and more of Tavares/Bergeron/Martin St. Louis.

2014 Winter Olympics Thread

I'm currently watching the women's hockey. Sweden vs. Russia. Second period and it's 2-0 for Russia.

Earlier today I watched the men's hockey between Austria and Finland. Final score was 8-4; for Finland. It was a really good game!

USA v Russia in Hockey Sat morning at 7a. I'll get up for that one. If the US don't win the gold, I'd love to see Russia win. Caps fan, so I dig Ovie and to win on home ice would be sweet.

Rooting hard against Canada. Suck it you crazy Canucks! :)

ovechkin needs to win a medal considering he will never win a cup. :D

really fun GAME to watch, and imagine play (i never tried).
but not a sport ;)
it is basically Bocce on ice. or shuffleboard, if you prefer.

A "game" is an individual match between two competitors - either team or individual. Tennis game. Hockey game. Curling game. Soccer game. But they're all sports.
