UK coverage mentioned that or high stick somewhere. Easy to abuse the moorings rule? Under pressure, minder makes it look like an accident.

Cheers,
OW

It's not often a goalie will knock the net off by himself as happened here. They're held together by strong magnets only giving to prevent injuries which often occurred with the stationary goals, as you can imagine.

Is it abused? I'd say almost never. I can't think of a time when I've ever seen it done intentionally. It does, every now and then, happen accidentally during a play not involving a direct hit, but it's pretty rare. This was just one of those times.

Can't believe that the US has been shut out of the speed skating medals so far. But it was nice to get one in women's skeleton and in two man bobsleigh.
It was those suits that sucked the talent out. Is the excuse they were using.

Yeah, the excuse making about the suits is laughable.

They lost because the other teams were better & faster, not because of the suits they were wearing.

Agreed. Going back to the suits they used in the World Cup championships didn't help them.

the nets aren't held together by magnets.. there are two holes in the ice where a peg will go into and the net is lifted over onto the pegs to hold it in place.

I'll be damned. It's called the Marsh Peg. They've been using them in the Olympics since 1998 and he NHL since 1991. They replaced the magnets because the magnets were seen as dislodging too easily. I had no idea... Thanks for the pic, carjakester.

no problem, i could also see the magnets not working right if ice covered them, as well as maybe a goalies blade attracting towards it? i never knew that magnets are used. at my rink we used lead pegs that were probably 10-15 pounds each to keep it in place. before the games the ice crew will go out and torch the hole and make sure it is big enough to fit from the zamboni going over it.

Russia got eliminated from the hockey tournament! They lost against Finland (3-1). I got to say, Finland played impressively in this game.

Canada vs. Latvia

The first round was fast paced. Canada scored first, then Latvia a few minutes later. So far, both teams are playing good. Latvia is playing surprisingly well. Very rough. I expected Canada to play better than how they're playing now. I feel like they're struggling.

The second round just ended. The Latvian team are playing very physically; they want to win very badly. Tavares got hit in the knee. It looks serious; he was limping.

I will be utterly shocked if Latvia makes it to the semifinals. I didn't even expect them to reach the quarterfinals.

Im expecting a rematch of canada versus usa in the final.

You would be wrong, Canada and the USA are playing each other in the semifinals, the winner goes on to the gold medal game against the winner of the Sweden vs. Finland game, and the two losers play for bronze.

I think the Canada vs USA game is going to be the game to watch! Probably better than the gold medal round. However if this is a tough game for either team. Let's hope there isn't a let down come the gold/silver medal rounds!

dang! i was hoping they would be able to end up in the final, haven't looked at the bracket so i didn't know where each team would end up.

I've been really disappointed in the time difference. The most hockey (or any Olympic coverage) I watched at once was the 3rd period and OT of Canada/Finland.

Friday is not only the end of a very long week, but my birthday. I'm so strongly debating telling my boss I'm just going to take a half day and have a liquid lunch watching USA/Canada. The thing is all my friends will be stuck in work, so that's holding me back.

9 PM Sochi time. I see that you live in Illinois. Sochi is 10 hours ahead your time.

It's a good thing time difference is not an issue here since Russia's time is the exact same where I live or I wouldn't be able to watch a lot of the events I would've liked to watch!
