I spent most of NBCs 2012 coverage yelling at the screen. Having grown up watching ABC coverage, it's just horrific. I don't have enough free time to make use of live feeds, but NBC would find a way to present a chess match in an annoying way. Forget moving participants.

I hear ya, bro. I've had a hard time watching the Olympics ever since NBC too over coverage. The verbal incontnience is more than any sane man can handle. I'm still trying to a version of the Opening Ceremony from outside the States so I don't have to listen to the NBC commentator's blattering.

Since I can't get any other version, besides the NBC coverage, I have to mute the TV every time I watch.

A "game" is an individual match between two competitors - either team or individual. Tennis game. Hockey game. Curling game. Soccer game. But they're all sports.

and how does that make curling a sport?

anyway, I am looking forward to see chess, poker, marbles, shuffleboard, bocce, etc. at the next Summer (or winter, or both) Olympics.
i think I have a fair chance at getting a medal at Risk!.

ovechkin needs to win a medal considering he will never win a cup. :D

Reminds me of a joke I heard a couple years back when I was bartending...

A guy comes into the bar and orders an "Ovechkin". Bartender tells the guy "I'm not familiar with that one, what is it?". Guy tells the bartender "It's a white russian without a cup." :D:D

Because it's a competitive physical activity. Chess and poker aren't physical activities. Did you know sharpshooting (pistol, rifle and shotgun disciplines) are summer Olympic sports? Same thing - competitive physical activities. Coordination and precision, even though speed, strength and endurance aren't involved.

To give you a taste of what you're (we) are missing, here is how BBC introduces their audience to curling:

Rimshot! He ain't done yet. :)

Seems like the men's snowboard cross event got delayed due to poor weather conditions. Seeding runs got cancelled. Organizers then decided to go straight to eliminations but because the fog is still thick they're saying they'll skip that and instead go straight into the main race.

What is the official reason for the disallowed goal?

The same players in the shootout is garbage, go through the team.

Cheers,
OW

The USA's net came off ifs moorings a few moments before the goal. I still think Russia got hosed on that one. Then again, several phantom calls went against the US, too. A tough break for the home team but I still thin they'll easily advance to the next round.

Why? If the goal came off it's pegs, the goal came off it's pegs and the play is dead. It's a pretty cut and dry rule.

Russia plays Norway, winner plays Finland. Winner of Czech/Slovakia plays USA, winner of Switzerland-Latvia plays Canada, and winner of Slovenia-Austria plays Sweden.

There's been some good hockey so far.

i like the same player option, put your best out there whenever you can. in the nhl it will take forever if they get through the main 5 guys who can score. Once it gets past the forwards then others don't really have a chance of scoring. Its also more interesting to see what some of these top players can do. Also fun to watch oshie go against his own goalie over and over.

I know the rule, it just wasn't called when happened, and it was a huge momentum swing to the US. That was a critical change in the game where it wouldn't have been if called immediately. That's all. It's sport, and it happens. I'd have been upset if that went against the US, too, for the same reason.

I'm ready for Canada. Don't want to look past the next game, but this rivalry is awesome. Those Canucks are good, too. Should be an excellent match if both get there.

It's definitely different to have the same guy go over and over. I think it makes it more challenging for both the shooter and the goalie.. the goalie doesn't know if the shooter's gonna use the same move or use a different move, and the shooter only has so many moves to choose from so it makes it more difficult for the shooter as it goes on longer too.

Yeah, if Canada and the US are going to meet this time, it's going to be in the semis. If it happens, it will no doubt be a great game. I might be slightly partial to Canada though, I really want to see Bergeron get another gold medal. ;)

in the interview after the game oshie said he was running out of moves. just the added twist of the two being team mates, i wonder if there was any moves he hasn't done on his own goalie in practice.

I think you're confusing their teams. ;) Oshie plays for the Blues and Bobrovsky (Russia's goalie) plays for the Blue Jackets.

But yeah, the running out of moves part is interesting. But I guess, if a guy felt he was out of moves, they could switch to another shooter.

I'm still surprised the USA picked Oshie over Kane. Kane's an absolute monster in shootouts, though I guess Oshie has a better overall percentage.

I'm from chicago and lately kane hasn't been as good as he has been, i only think he has one or two shootout goals this year. plus he had 2 chances in OT and didn't convert.

Can't believe that the US has been shut out of the speed skating medals so far. But it was nice to get one in women's skeleton and in two man bobsleigh.

so you are on board for shuffleboard, marbles, bocce, petanque, billiard, snooker, darts, horseshoe, ring-toss, bag-toss, croquet, sack-race, miniature-golf, bowling and the like to assign olympic medals?
they are as "physical" as curling and wildly more practiced.

oh, and gotta have a medal in beer-pong too!

UK coverage mentioned that or high stick somewhere. Easy to abuse the moorings rule? Under pressure, minder makes it look like an accident.

I don't know the specifics of all of the activities you mention above, but generally, yes, I'm on board with precision, coordination and balance based sports that don't have much speed, strength and endurance aspects being part of the Olympics.

ps - since you object to sack-race, how do you feel about hurdles in track and field?

pps - how do you feel about soccer being an Olympic sport? How would you feel about ultimate Frisbee being included as well? How do you feel about the equestrian sports being included? How do you feel about the sharpshooting sports being included?

oh, and gotta have a medal in beer-pong too!

I don't think anything involving alcohol should be included in the Olympics.
