Are y'all sure that it's not supposed to be working like that? I mean I get the idea that going from 0 to full speed is pretty concerning but why all of a sudden would the MacBook Pro lineup all of a sudden be having fan trouble?

Mine does not go from 0 to 6,200 all at once. I've already posted my experience with the fan speeding up as load increases and temps go up. With that said I'm sure that there are some programs that take temps from an idle state to a very hot state in a very short period of time like a video game for example and I'm sure that the fans react accordingly by spinning up to the max in a short period of time as well that might give the perception that the fans only go from 0 to max with nothing in between.

Alright that makes sense. Especially since the Macbook's fans are so quiet, I could see how it just sneaks up on you! :D

I can only go by what I was experiencing when I had my 2015. Exporting photos or building previews in Lightroom caused the fan to jump up to full speed. Then it would slowly back down to a normal speed indicating that full speed wasn't really necessary. This gave me the impression that the SMC was waiting too long to activate the fan.

This also happened when I was watching live news clips online. Fan suddenly went from 0 to 6,900 rpm.

Maybe this is normal for the 2015's, but I wasn't comfortable with it and returned the laptop as none of my previous machines did this.

Anyway, I'll wait and see how it plays out before considering a repurchase.

Come to think of it, I kind of noticed the same thing with the fan in my 2015 rMBP. I didn't run any monitors (it's at Apple for an unrelated repair...sigh), but I noticed that unless the machine is under a moderate to high CPU/GPU load, it's practically dead quiet. And it ramps up quite fast. So maybe it's normal?

But then again, my point of reference is an older (Early 2011) 13" MBP, so I just figured that maybe a different thermal threshold inherent in a newer CPU architecture would explain the difference.

Still reads 0 RPM here, but I can't force the fan to speed up. I select, Medium and high, fan stays at 0 RPM.

Mine did same thing yesterday, during 10.10.3 update. When the progress bar said it 7 minutes left from the end, the fan turned up at full speed.

Weird..

Interesting. I have had the same issue described in this thread. I initially thought it was a faulty unit and exchanged it for a new one. The new one had the same problem. I don't think its an issue with any one unit, its either a configuration change for the new models or a firmware problem.

Either way, I thought I was alone in this so it's good to hear that others have the same issue. Hopefully this situation is brought to Apple's attention.

I have a question for us in the thread experiencing this. What processor do you have?

I have an i7. Let's see if there is any correlation there.

Good to see this thread. I had the same concern, i installed istat menus to monitor the system, with CPU temp reads at 95 to 100C, the fan is 0....rpm. I was pretty worried if mine was a faulty one, even i was in the return window. Uninstalled the istat, reset SMC, nothing changed. So, i just let it go...

a while before, i watched a 3 hours movie with flash, computer was warm to hot, no fan noise can be heard. Since I didn't have istat, didn't really know what the temperature was.

Now, I am just thinking maybe it is normal for this new macbook pro 13

mine is the basic model

Hi guys,

Mine behaved the same way on Yosemite. I have the 512 GByte model. When I installed the El Capitan beta however, it stopped doing it and remained this way until the beta 5 update. I thought they had somehow fixed it in El Capitan and now it's back again. Has anyone checked the fan behavior on Bootcamp?
