Not at all. Button is one of my favourite drivers. Apart from the fact he is British, he seems like an all round nice guy. I just think given how much internal debate there was at McLaren about awarding him a contract, I think those same voices will be demanding his head if he hasn't delivered the goods.
Given I believe Alonso will get more out of the package, that won't help his cause.
Contracts are often not seen through to there conclusion in sports.

I think if Honda comes through next year, Button is one of the few drivers who can actually handle Alonso... Unless we get team orders again like Barrichello in '02... :(

I don't get why there's so much hoopla about him signing with McLaren. I get he's a big name but he's not that big. C'mon.

Contracts, Engineers, stuff, and Mr. F

Don't forget F1 contracts are bizarre. Vettel may have signed a "first right of refusal" deal with Ferrari in 2013. If I were a driver today, I certainly would follow Adrian Newey wherever he went (and it's reasonable to assume Vettel/Newey were a package deal for a mercurial moment.)

F1 history is full of geniuses for a brief period. There are few names that span more, such as: Gordon Murray, John Barnard, Rory Byrne, Patrick Head and Adrian Newey. Other's capture lightening in a bottle for just a few years like Osamu Goto, Gary Anderson, Neil Oatley, etc. All are brilliant men, it's more of a statement of how hard it is to be the top of the top. I'm also amazed at some of the people on the list weren't engineers by curriculum but experience. Their IQ and drive must be off the charts-- the lot of them.

My hand's up: I bleed rocket red ever since my imagination was rocked by a 25 year old Brazilian who survived a dark period in the sport(and also happens to also be one of the most gracious men you could ever hope to meet. Don't be intimidated to introduce yourself if you ever see him!) It's hard to fault Vettel going to Ferrari. How can you not get seduced by the throngs of passionate fans? He's probably has more supporters than almost all world leaders by a job choice.

Didn't work out at Mercades for them though did it? I wonder how much of this years success is down to the pair of them?

i hate to say this but i believe Michael's age was beginning to be a factor.

i wondered if they'd focused more nico what it would have been like.

Yes it's true Michael was past his best. The fact that Nico was not completely outclassed by him shows that (as well as how good Nico is).

Nice to see Hamilton pick up the BBC's SPOTY award last night, thoroughly deserved.

I am amazed though by social media this morning from so many people who don't understand the fact F1 drivers have to be athletes and its not just about driving a car! A serious lack of education out there and because F1 is not a mainstream sport, its very misunderstood.

As much as I am a Hamilton fan don't think he deserved the award. This is two years now I have been unhappy with the choice

I felt he deserved it in 2008 and feel he has done more than enough to justify it this year. I can't see how an F1 driver winning the ultimate prize is any less deserving than other sports that carry varying degrees and physical demands on the athlete. He has conducted himself well and engaged with the fans all year while on the road to victory and I think that helps with the personality side of things.

Its nice to see a non-mainstream sport be represented because this country couldn't give it the time of day when a British driver isn't winning.

One thing for people to remember about Sports Personality of the year is the fact England doesn't have a separate award for English sports people. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all hold a separate ceremony to award people from their countries. Chris Hoy won British and Scottish previously. Gareth Bale won the 2014 welsh SPOTY and could have won the British version too as he was also nominated. Rory McIlroy won the NI SPOTY award and was also eligible to win the British version but lost out to Hamilton.

Lewis couldn't win an additional English SPOTY award because it simply doesn't exist. My question is why are there separate awards and why is England the only country without its own? I write this from Wales where Gareth Bale is getting a lot of attention in the Western Mail. :)

PS: I think there should only be one SPOTY

I guess the problem most people have with F1 racing and sports personality is that it is all about the car. Hamilton had zero chance of winning without having the best car. This is clearly proven by the fact that Mercedes Totally dominated and got first and second place. It is also clearly demonstrated by the fact that Vettel after totally dominating previously did not figure this year at all.
No one is denying that all F1 drivers have to achieve a certain level of fitness but You could put any of the top drivers in the 2014 Mercedes car and they were going to win.

Nobody wins in F1 without a good car and that is not exclusive to this year and Vettel's previously. I also don't agree anybody can win with the best car. There are far too many drivers in history who have lost out to their team mates by quite a margin when they can't get to grips with having the best machinery. You need the talent like in any sport to succeed and the best drivers will win when they have the best car, how many WDC's have not? It is about finding the balance and adapting in order to maximise your chances to win, even in a dominant car. So really I call rubbish on part of your claim.

Even in golf the equipment is a deciding factor. I have played for years and it can take months to adapt to new clubs. Look at McIlroy in 2013 when he changed to Nike clubs! It totally blew his season. However he had the talent to recover and have an excellent 2014.

I don't entirely agree. It's a big factor, but it's hardly everything.

The proof is that you can have identical cars and both teammates can have very different results. Vettel-Ricciardo, Button-Magnussen, Alonso-Raikkonen, etc etc. Teammates that have the same car but the driver's poise and attitude make a huge difference. I don't say "skill" because in each the lacking teammate most definitely has skill... especially with Red Bull. A veritable rookie upsetting a 4-time champion? That's not the car.

You could argue the same for the Scottish, Welsh and NI parliaments, but that's probably a discussion for the PRSI threads!

Yeah best not go down that route especially as England doesn't have its own parliament like the others. Speaking from Wales I haven't got a good word to say about our Assembly so like SPOTY, we should be united IMO. All that aside I have made an excellent point.

To get this back on track, looks like the missing RBR trophies have been found in a lake.
Just as well, as they won't be getting any more anytime soon! :D

Well, Mercedes has the best engine, yet RBR ran second in the Constructors, beating every other Mercedes powered team. RBR was the only other team to win races, yes, due to the top team having issues, but again, beat everyone else. For a team with the we'll known lower HP, their result was punching above their weight. So, they still have an awesome overall package of weight distribution, C of G, aero and mechanical grip. As does the Mercedes main team.

RBR needs to find some HP. I see they occasionally ran lower DF to help compensate that, but I see RBR being better than the rest again in 2015.

Alonso is the best driver, by far IMO. Ricciardo has shown he can match anyone, he may be another Alonso.

Honda has possibly a great car. While they don't have the benefit of having a car in 2014, they have the benefit of seeing the challenges in 2014 and doing whatever they like during 2014 to improve it, while the existing cars are locked down. They have had a long and unfettered time to perfect the package, i.e getting all the parts in the best physical package, and they know the HP number required. Lots to look forward to

There was a break in at their headquarters, and they stole the trophies that were on display. Some of them were replicas, but Christian Horner was pretty pissed about it.
Anyway looks like the thief decided they couldn't sell them, so they ended up tossed in a lake, where they were spotted and recovered. It was all over the news in the UK.

Quick question: does any know how I could find some of old races between Senna and Prost? They have to be online somewhere but I can't find them.

Also the race where Jenson came back in the rain and won, in Canada?

Thanks!

Canadian GP

2011 Canadian Grand Prix was Button's win. Pressured Vettel into a spin to win.

Good luck with online F1. Bernie likes to get paid, and aggressively shuts down things.

FOM shut things down usually in the hours after the races but even they don't have the man power to chase 99% of the stuff uploaded to YouTube. They can't even close down the illegal streams of live races with any effect lol.

Just don't go looking for Senna vs Prost in Japan. Not a lot of action!

Yeah I know :( Outside of a handful of like ten second clips on YouTube I can't find much of anything - even on Demonoid.

It has to be available somewhere; I wouldn't mind even buying them on Amazon or something, but you just plain can't find them... Apparently it's not just me. Damn.

True. I wouldn't mind paying to see some of those old races either.
