Honestly I think you got a defective model. I bought a base model 2015 13" and have no lag at all.

Remember that the Broadwell processors got delayed because they were having issues with getting production up due to it being much more difficult to fabricate. I believe they were having issues with producing processors that were fabricated correctly. You may have gotten a faulty processor most likely.

So jitteriness, interface lags are defective hardware issues for you? A GPU defect normally causes screen artefacts so I don't understand where you get the idea that it could be a "defective model".

Also, I may add that activating the contrast feature in accessibility pretty much resolved it for me. Sounds to me that it is an issue with the OS.

You are correct that when a gpu has issues it presents as screen artifacts. However, when a cpu has issues, it could present as a myriad of problems, obviously it wouldn't be screen artifacts.

If it were a software problem, then everyone with a new 2015 13" rmbp would have the same problem because they all have the same software. Since it is limited to just a few people, there is only 1 possibility; hardware.

There is only 1 other factor that could be considered. That people are not setting up their new rmbp as a new laptop but instead refreshing from an older macbook. This could be the only other possibility.

Hey. I'm also having major UI lag problems with my 2015 rMBP 13". Here's a link to a video demonstrating it:
https://youtu.be/VAbAj8uS07A

I didn't restore my mac apps and settings from a backup, instead I did a fresh install. I'm not sure if the UI lag was present at start, I didn't pay attention to it then. Now it's really noticeable and bad. I've tried many solutions provided by various threads on different forums. Only turning on high-contrast mode has helped. I don't accept that as a solution, since a brand new and powerful Macbook should be able to run smoothly. Many commentators verify this: many people have it butter smooth.

If I understood OP correctly, they were able to resolve the issue by resetting PRAM? Or did I miss something?

I tried resetting PRAM two times. Didn't fix the problem.

Intel just released new Haswell and Broadwell GPU drivers that I expect will greatly improve performance when make it to OS X in 10.10.4 or 10.11.

This is cool and all, but I wonder when they're coming out? Probably takes many months? I'm also not a 100% sure if it's a software or a hardware problem.

That does not necessarily mean you have a lemon or a hardware issue and before exchanging the machine the consensus is try a pram reset first then try a reinstall of the osx and then a clean setup without restoring from backup.

This is what I'm thinking. I might have to reinstall OSX next. I just don't want to do that before it's necessary, since it will take me hours of work to reinstall and setup everything.

you prob got a lemon... same specs, 16gb ram, 512 ssd, buttery smooth

What's a lemon? A badly preinstalled mac? So reinstalling OSX should help?

You might be wasting your time, I had done a clean install of Yosemite when it was released, it didn't remedy the jitteriness.

just to give an update to my situation.

after my fresh install my rMBP is working perfectly.

So some for some people it would seem to help, for others not. Different problem altogether? Maybe for some it's a bad preinstall, for some a bad hardware?

Also, does anyone know how Apple reacts to cases like these? Do you get a replacement mac easily? Any gift cards to make up for all the trouble? I've had to spend hours to figure out what's wrong, and having to reinstall OSX or setup a new macbook would still require plenty of hours.

How do you reach the conclusion that just a few people are affected? I hope that its not based on a casual observation of complaints on the macrumors forums.

Also everyone may be using the same OS but you cannot assume that everyone is using the same applications. Plus you have to factor in how people use their machines. Light browsing and the occasional email is not the same thing as running virtual machines and browsing with 20+ tabs.
Lastly, complaints are coming from users of machines that are clearly from different production runs (late 2013, mid 2014 etc) so this is not a batch issue (which is what would be expected if it were indeed a hardware defect).

Reassuring to note that you are experiencing the exact same problem because it makes it more likely that this a software rather than hardware issue. Your brand new MBP is equipped with a broadwell processor which is different to mine which is haswell.
On a side note, I also noticed the jittery interface whilst playing around with a retina iMac at a local apple store.

Increasing contrast works for me but I shouldn't have to do that on a new laptop. I do think it is a software issue, and it's ridiculous how poor Apple's QC is on software.

If it were software related, it would happen to 100% of new MacBooks. Software doesn't just work randomly like throwing a stone into a pond or something. Starting up OS X isn't like the computer is just digging through random code and coming up with some random crap. It is a very specific set of instruction.

If it is happening to some people right off the bat with brand new computers but not happening to others, then it is hardware related end of story.

I really don't get why some people refuse to except the new look, especially those with Retina displays  To me it looks very modern and nicely optimized for Retina displays.

I didn't like Yosemite's look at first, but Mavericks looks pretty dated now. With the right wallpaper coupled with dark mode, it looks gorgeous on my 15" rMBP.

So what you are suggesting is that not only is it spread across a broad range of processors but also across generations which means that it is probably not limited to Apple hardware either. Highly unlikely, me thinks.

...Also if it was a hardware issue, switching on contrast or running mavericks wouldn't eliminate the problem.

Same problem, i bought new rMBP 13 in Russian AppleStore a week ago and saw the Apple from another point of view. Almost everywhere i have lags or software crashes. That behavior like a Win Vista 7-8 years ago .
I tried a lot to fix a lags:
  1. Clean install
  2. Reset NVRAM, PRAM
  3. Decrease contrast
  4. A lot another tips from Internet...
But it is impossible :(

I also tried install Windows and there i saw a terrible behavior of BootCamp. The program is terribly slow and freezes everytime. But system works much better than Yosemite, however i hate Windows and want any Unix :D

Also i installed Fedora 21 and Ubuntu 15.04. Ubuntu 15.04 have a poor optimization for HiDPI. Fedora 21 with Gnome looks nice, have smooth UI(very-very smooth...), but not all programms optimized for this resolution and i can't get touchpad, wireless, fnkeys works.
And so..
I have a week to return back my MacBook, but I don't know what to do after. Now on the market there are no analogues of such characteristics. :(

Why not just exchange for another one?

For the same? It will help? If not the same, I don't want Air because he has a bad screen, MBP15 is too expensive for me, the old Pro is also not the best solution.

Yesterday i tried 10.10.3 Beta 5, and i saw very-very-very small good changes - less scrolling lags in Finder, and no more..

I was in the Apple store yesterday and the Genius said he could not see the choppiness. He later acknowledged it when compared to the 15'' as it was running smoothly. Again, the choppiness is not present if you are on the "Default" screen display option. It's when you increase the resolution that you start seeing choppiness, which is demonstrable with window resizing or Mission control activation.

Honestly I'm pretty sure that this is something that is happening to everyone, granted they are running the same drivers/software as well as the same resolution settings. Some people just notice it more than others. Some people are probably using default for display, which would reduce the choppiness, and others are using other scaled resolutions which have their own degree of higher choppiness.

I agree with this. I'm one of "those people" that notice these things. Most of my relatives and friends don't notice it at all ... until I point it out to them. I've been the recipient of more than one baleful glance as a result. This is one of those things where I think that ignorance really is bliss.

I doubt it's the same with everyone. Especially because some people have got a solution by PRAM reset or a OSX reinstall. If you check out my video link, it's definitely not normal and would alert anyone. Besides, turning down the resolution doesn't help me.

Purchased a brand new 2015 13" rMBP the other day, 2.9 i5, 512GB configuration. Setup the Mac as brand new, no time machine restore. Mission Control and swiping between desktops isn't usually very fluid, and sometimes it's smooth as silk. Resolution hasn't been changed, I'm running it at the best for the display setting. PRAM reset didn't seem to improve on anything.

I absolutely love how snappy the Mac feels compared to my 2011 27" iMac, but as a heavy multi-tasker that's often using gestures, seeing the animations chug compared to my four year old Mac is a disappointment. I'm hoping that a software update can help alleviate this, as I highly doubt exchanging this unit for another one will solve anything. Any other suggestions are welcome!

Switch on the contrast feature in accessibility and...bam...resolved. Of course this is not a permanent solution but at least that horrid choppiness goes away.

I run scaled up resolutions because that's why I got the retina. Im also switching from a '13 MBA, which I was fairly happy with the performance. I have a new 4k external display now and the new hassle 13" can barely switch full screen spaces. resetting PRAM, etc. does not help.

hopefully it's a software issue with the upscaling, otherwise I have to set this back.

apple should not have advertised the ability to drive a 4k display if the performance is this terrible; sad.

I have my 13" early 2015 (i7/16/512) connected to a Sharp PN-K322B and it runs 3840x2160, 60Hz without any discernible lag.

good to hear. I just ordered an i7/16.. but I think it's a GPU issue. are you running your 4k display upscaled or at that res? mine is performing absolutely dismal.
