I don't know where Shields or Hamels are, but if the Dodgers get Lester, then the Giants need to pull out the wallet and get one of those other two. We can counter Kershaw with Bumgarner, but other than that if LA has Lester there we will be in a world of hurt.

Shields is a lot like Bumgarner in his great disguise and bag of tricks in his pitching and would be perfect for the Giants. Hamels is a proven entity and would also be great but Dodgers are eying him like Lester but will probably not pay for both. If they do then the NL West is theirs to lose. I still want Lester and so far Cubs seem to have the most they want to spend on him.

UPDATE: But LA can top that for Lester (if this article is the latest word):

Ken Rosenthal has tweeted Jon Lester is choosing between the Giants and the Cubs and others are suggesting we will know within the next day or so.

That would certainly jumpstart the Cub rebuild.

One of his agents denied that was the case.

Will be an interesting decision for him: does he like money, or does he like... winning? :D

Both are teams who sorely need him. The Cubs need a WS and the Giants need to get a #2 behind Madbum with Cain and Lincecum as questionable greats who have probably seen better days. If you want my bet for who throws the next no-hitter then it would be Cain or Lincecum, but if you want a long term consistent pitcher with low ERA then I vote for Lester. If not Lester, then Shields. I don't know if we have the money for Scherzer or what he would be asking for if Lester and Shields slip between our fingers.

Anyway, Lester, Shields, or Scherzer would make me ecstatic for the Giants.

David Robertson you are no Mariano Rivera. 4 years 46 mil to the White Sox.

If they hadn't gotten Samardzija from the A's, I would have been against this signing, but since the White Sox got Samardzija, they now have a significantly more competitive pitching staff.

White Sox Rotation: Sale, Samardzija, Quintana, Rodon

I don't think Robertson is worth $46 for 4. It's way over priced. There is only one reliever worth that much and he is retired now.

Plus I don't know how durable Robertson is.

Lester to Cubs, darn. I guess it wasn't a real guessing game when Cubs came in with big offer sometime back.

Jason Hammel, too.

What do the Giants do to get a solid #2 behind Madbum?

The Giants were out of the running for a while now. It was down to the Cubs and Red Sox.

I am also not seeing any news on twitter about Lester.

I don't see that anywhere. Hope that's true.

Giants front office leaked it so it's not official.

What I wanted for this reason that "Lester is expected to sign with Cubs" article, but then I read this which is about the most reasonable explanation as to why it's better for Lester with Cubs:

http://fansided.com/2014/12/08/why-jon-lester-needs-sign-chicago-cubs/

There's also this, too:

http://www.overthemonster.com/2014/12/9/7362385/red-sox-jon-lester-free-agent-rumors-cubs

To say the least all the pro-Cubs talk, growing by the minute, made me very sad for my Giants but happy for Lester and the Cubs. It does seem like a match made in heaven, especially with players and front office people he already knows there. To say the least, he will come in like a savior.

He has the 8th best ERA for 2014 and postseason experience. I think he's worth every penny and Chicago knows that.

2 reasons why Lester would sign with the Cubs. The Red Sox made him a crap offer in the spring, I think he is still pissed at that. And Lester and Theo Epstein are close.

BleacherNation on twitter reporting the Cubs' offering 7 years, $175 million

Wow! 7 years! I didn't see that one.

I heard the rumors about making 6 years a real sealer for a deal with many thinking just 5 years. I also heard rumors about "someone" considering going over $170 mil, but this seems more than reasonable.

With another high profile signing already, MLB watchers will expect huge things for Chicago. There's a lot of talk about a strong farm system and if that's true then the team is playing its cards right. Think for the long term, not just 2015 which is what the Giants may look like. I have a feeling that the Giants have squeezed the max out of its now aging players and for an older guy Lester, the Cubs will make him an instant franchise guy.

6 years has been the baseline, if he is after that extra year that I don't think the Red Sox want to go the Cubs might be the winner.

I give Theo Epstein a lot of credit. He said he was going to rebuild and it looks like the team is on the verge of being a contender. A lot of that depends on how Adam Russell, Javy Baez, and Kris Bryant pan out.

As far as the White Sox, there are just a lot of holes to fill.

Yes, by the way, I'm bisoxual.

I go with Giants but when they are out, I am all for A's.

I think with Giants it goes with two things, "Love Giants, hate Dodgers". There's so much of a cultish, religious following with Giants/Bonds/Lincecum/Willie Mays that there's no room to hate A's after all that. They don't even play in NL West so it's not a visible threat.

As for Dodgers, I don't hate them per se but I have always feared them. We could be on top of the world and in a season where they are not in contention, but they can sting us to do more often than we down them from what I have seen. LA always rises to the occasion. In football us Niners fans have had to always watch out for the Rams, regardless of where they are in a season. They were the LA Rams once so it was truly an LA verus SF thing for a long, long time.

My only irrational hope was that Lester got a really, really cool new home in the Oakland Hills and wants to stay in the Bay Area so he would be able to stay here with its excellent weather but only play for SF instead of Oakland A's. Does he want to leave beautiful norcal for cold Chicago?

We will all know for sure probably before this Tuesday night turns into Wednesday. All this anticipation is similar to all the festivities we all saw with who would get Tanaka. At the latest, when I wake up tomorrow morning the SF paper will either be elated or pissed but either way there will be big block letters on front page:

LESTER SIGNS WITH GIANTS

or

LESTER SIGNS WITH CUBS

So why all the greed for getting Lester is what non-Giants fans may ask? With other historical five year dynasties like A's, Yankees (several times), or early Red Sox, there was at least one back to back on top of at least three wins in five years. The Giants don't have that back to back in order to show that type of 324 game dominance over two seasons. Heck even the Blue Jays went back to back. We couldn't even secure postseasons in 2011 and 2013 after World Series wins in 2010 and 2012. Giants fans don't want to see failure to get a postseason in 2015. Just getting that postseason, even as wild card, will help our overall long term legacy of this group of guys. Nobody will put the names of any members from 2010, 2012, and 2014 in the same category of Bonds, Mays, and McCovey, but it would be nice to be remembered as a legendary team, kind of like an Orange Machine akin to the great Big Red Machine of the Reds and their legends.

Theo Epstein is super young. He reminds me of the Yale graduate character from Moneyball played by Jonah Hill as a 20-something baseball manager.

I'm still trying to figure out how you're a White Sox AND Cubs fan?

The Cubs/White Sox rivalry is overblown. The two teams have little to no effect on each other.

For me, I grew up near US Cellular (not that near), and spent my young professional years at Wrigley drinking watered down $8 beer on half day Friday.

Most Chicago fans go either way. I love baseball and I hate the meathead fans that ruin it for Chicago on both sides of town.

Also, living in Austin, I just watch what's on, anymore :(

Which means a lot of bad Texas Rangers

I live in Houston! So I know about bad baseball! Thank God for mlb.tv!

When I was growing up the Yanks stunk and the Mets were good and I was taught that my 2 favorite teams were the Yanks and whoever was playing the Mets! Back then, they had no effect on each other either. No interleague, no dreams of a subway series. We just hated them. :D

After the 2000 World Series the hate died a bit, and now that I'm not in NY anymore, I'll watch them. I just don't think it's possible to ever like them. Or root for them to win. Accept if they're playing against a division rival. :D
