Well so my second replacement unit, the one with the faulty "C" key, is now working ok. Seems that key broke for only a few days, and it's been working ok since.
In the meantime, I ordered an XPS, which I received yesterday. I've just filled the return form to send it back.
For all its faults, the MBP is still way better than a XPS.

So I'm back to square one, hoping that my MBP keyboard will continue to work...

I have a 2016 15in MacBook Pro. I just got it today. At first my u key seem to be missing clicks. Now it appears to be typing double sometimes. anyone else had this issue?

sometimes macOS auto corrects and removes the doubles, but not all the time.

Guess I will be returning the first Mac I've bought in 5 years for an exchange.
I have the same problem but it is also intermittently, but frequenty, present with an Apple bluetooth keyboard - this makes it a software issue. Most reporducible is a failure of the command-C copy function (and then multiple copies).

Right. I purchased a base model non-TouchBar MBP 13" a few days ago, and whilst I am very happy about the laptop itself, the keyboard is a big let down.

My up and down arrows don't make the usual 'click' sound and they miss the clicks too often (1 every 3 times!). I click but it doesn't register the click unless I press very hard in an unnatural way. So it's faulty and it goes back.

Also, I noticed that the keyboard is VERY loud. As in I am in the lounge and my wife is in bed and she complains about the noise. And some keys are louder then others, which means Apple still hasn't worked out how to put together a consistent keyboard.

I shall wait 12 months and get the new version. Sorry Apple, but for £1,445 I am expecting an impeccable keyboard.
Same here with the arrow keys, pretty unacceptable for such an expensive device.

I just found this topic here and registered as I'm having a similar issue with my Late 16 MBP 13" non-touch. Some days ago, some of my keys (arrow up and down as well as a letter key) weren't working right and only responded to firm pressure. I was stupid enough to remove the key as I did often with my older MacBook with the old keyboard, assuming there was some kind of dirt below which had to be removed (I use my laptop all day and can't always prevent some crumbs, dust etc.) . It was bound to happen that I probably destroyed the mechanism of the arrow-up and down keys despite being extra careful and sending it in for repair now.

I'm just curious what will happen in some weeks when there will be the same problem with another key, as I suppose there is no option to clean the keys myself without risking a costly repair again.

The new keys can be removed and cleaned, but it's tricky. There are said to be videos online about how to do it.

Thanks for the info. I'm honestly not sure if I'm willing to bear that risk, depending on if I'm gonna be charged now for repair and how much it is. For that price, I really don't wanna make such compromises. I'm not an IT-technician and shouldn't be for that price tag. I use this machine for a period of six weeks now

If it becomes apparent that the new keyboards have frequent problems of this kind I expect Apple will repair them for free, as they have in similar cases. I don't think we know yet how common malfunctioning keys are, so we're all waiting with you to find out.

Your case is different this time because you may have damaged the keys trying to fix them, so we may not learn much about the case of a merely malfunctioning key. Hopefully they'll just fix it without charge. You're not near an Apple Store, I suppose?

Hey Sanpete! I'm not unfortunately, I'm a German customer and we only have a very limited number of Apple stores. However, I hope there will be a knowledge gain as I have a letter key (Ä) with the same problem as the arrow keys despite not being removed and my F11 key is not working properly either, it misses between 0 and 50 % when pressed depending on location of the finger and force applied.

Not a very good keyboard, it seems. Let us know what you find out. Hope it goes well.

My coworker has similar problems, feels like a LOT of people are having these issues, but of course that's still anecdotal evidence.

You guys are making me worry. I got a 13-inch TB MBP about a month ago. No key failures so far, but I wonder how much longer this luck will last...

Only got it back today but so far yes. I had keys that would not type, sleep and wake issues, computer would forget my finger print and brightness would go up and down from full bright to black screen by itself to name a few.

if you had a finicky volume down button but if you know hitting it in the right spot works, would you bother with a repair any time soon?

everything else seems fine, dont really want to roll the dice. getting AppleCare too but

If I wasn't close to an Apple Store, I'd check out Youtube videos an how to take off and clean a key.

Same problem here with my 'b' key, it registers twice sometimes... Do you know how much it cost to repair it ? assuming that I void the warranty. (sadly there are no official apple stores in my country)

Thanks

thats a bbummer

this is what makes me afraid to want to get my entire top case replaced, when its just the half right of my volume - key that isn't responsive

that would drive me absolutely insane!

luckily added AppleCare today so I can sit on it for a good while

A quick update on my issue: I have my MBP back from the dealership, according to the delivery slip, the whole topcase was changed. No bill was issued. It is marked as "under warranty". I'll report if I notice anything different than before, I would be interested if there is anything new or has been changed to the keyboard mechanism.

About 5 weeks after the topcase replacement, failure starts to come back, now especially with the F11/F12 (Volume down/up) keys. Sure it will spread to the other keys soon. Arrow right has made some problems too, but they disappeared for now.

Man I hope they can figure out how to make these keyboards much much much more bulletproof and reliable.

This is way too many problems and irregularities, especially if you consider aging of the laptop over a couple years.

Could be a nightmare once out of warranty, whereas I never had any keyboard issues whatsoever on any previous MacBooks, all the way back to my first 17" PowerBook G4. Just not a part of a laptop you want to even consider having to worry about.

having a keyboard failure after cleaning the keyboard. and no, i didnt overspill it, i was extra carful not to do that. anyway one key doesnt work at all anymore. and after trying to clean possible "debris" under the keys with pressured air, another key doesnt work properly anymore needing multiple strokes now.

this is unacceptable... it is in fact impossible to clean the new mbp keyboards.
the slightest amount of humidity seems to be able to kill a key.
permanently... the cleaning was 4 days ago.

made an appointment at the genious bar to get a replacement or repair.

this issue will get quite expensive for apple....
and yes, thinking about an XPS, too.
apple is going down the drain!

I had the same problem! It's less than 5 months old and after cleaning the keyboard I found that the caps lock key doesn't press down anymore. Prior to the cleaning, I'd been having problems with the space bar and enter keys too. When I brought my laptop in for repair, they cited me for water damage, so Apple Care wouldn't cover the repairs. The only water I'm aware of being near the machine was when I cleaned the keyboard with a damp cloth. I am shocked at how delicate this machine and the keyboard is.

I would recommend avoiding the new MBP until the next gens come out.

They replaced my top case last week. Now my fan is making very weird noises when I move the laptop up and down. Good stuff Apple, I like how I'm paying a premium for this over any other laptop..

second MBP-wt, same problems, e.g. >

Good idea. The XPS has no defects! Just read their forums full of nothing but light and happiness.
My friend has bought XPS a few month ago. Has no hardware problems (only minor issues with software, I mean OS Windows :)).
So, I'll wait till June MBP update, and if they( :apple: ) don't fix it, I will buy surface or something like that(xps), cuz I can't normally work, and this isn't funny.
