So, with today's new refresh of the MacBook, I noticed that the USB Type-C port was replaced with USB 3.1 from USB 3.0

Do these ports support the Thunderbolt 3 specification?

https://thunderbolttechnology.net/tech/faq
http://www.cnet.com/news/thunderbolt-3-and-usb-type-c-join-forces-for-one-port-to-rule-them-all/

In other words, can I connect this macbook to my Thunderbolt Display? I had to return the 2016 MacBook because it couldn't be done. (I know an adapter will be required, but I want to know if the port is capable enough)

It's probably just 3.1, no mention of Thunderbolt anywhere (couldn't find any anyways) in the announcement or MacBook's page on the website.

Also, for Thunderbolt 3, they'd have to add Alpine Ridge chipset, which means they would have to redesign the logic board to accommodate it.

Pretty sure there's no TB3.

I'm in the same boat - the MacBook would be perfect if only it could connect to my TBD.

Just hope there's a nice redesigned MBP instead in my near future...

Still the same USB-C 3.0 which is the same as 3.1 gen. 1 with 5Gbps bandwitdh, and therefore no TB3. What you want is USB-C 3.1 gen. 2. Confused? Yes. That naming scheme is the most stupid one I've seen for a long time (Here's to you Xbox though).
