I think I ended up with a better value/$
Leonov Yoga 900

$699 (BB Black Friday)

Nearest MBP equivalent MBP 13" 2.4 $1799
For less than $300 I can run down to Microcenter and upgrade storage to 1tb.

Add the 1tb to both and difference delta is <$1000 to $2399
Add sales tax and differential is greater.

I'll let someone else handle silly geek scores. And why are you bashing Walmart? My friend works there and makes over 400K a year and his wife, who's just a store manager, makes over 100K.

I work with these machines for pro photography in Hollywood and also work with studios who are using them for RED system production. Yeah, they ARE faster than the last generation. There's test after test showing it.

Why is it your business? Well, because a profitable company can do things like get rid of a wobbly keyboard and create a screen that is finally bright enough for production work outside.

No, I don't care about value at all. The laptop is a tool. It either works well or it doesn't. I have no emotional stake. I just did a shoot that paid for both of my new laptops 4 times over. Should I worry that they cost 200 dollars more than the previous ones?

I have yet to own a MacBook that was a "rip-off" as they all helped me make money in the smoothest fashion possible. This new tMBP is even better.

And yeah...I drive the fastest production sedan in the world. You get what you pay for.

Wow....you're sooooo confused. I don't do video editing. I am a pro photographer (and screenwriter) and I use top tier camera gear. The two 13" tMBP are perfect for such work. Why on Earth would I need a dedicated card???

As for your "rendering farms" that is a small portion of the community here. Like many film makers here, RED system (and many others) are cut on these machines routinely. Even back in NY one of the top commercial editing salons is currently using MacBooks and iMacs for editing.

I'm currently working with a director on a feature who shot his entire award winning featurette on RED system and cut on a MBP, so please tell us how a new tMBP suddenly can't do such work.

Bottom line...if you make good money, you likely don't care about the tools and associated costs. You just want them to work. I just ordered a Nikon 70-200 lens to replace my previous working zoom lens. You might think 2500 is a lot for one lens (it's not), but it will pay for itself in about two hours. Overpriced? Maybe. Do I care? Not at all. My work and time are worth the expense. The money is trivial.

If you want the good life (or at least a better one) I suggest you not worry about what a laptop costs and focus on doing good work!

As for the Walmart comment....that's just silly. I own a watch that likely cost more than your car. So what? I know people who own watches that cost more than my last 5 cars! Someone always has "more" and you won't be happy worrying about someone else's finances.

VALUE is a perception. For some people, spending over 500.00 on a computer makes no sense. Apple is not for them, even if they have money to burn. My father is wealthy enough to buy ANY car..and I mean that in the extreme. He drives an 8 year old Forester. No car is worth more than 30K in his mind and I won't argue with him.

Cheers,

R.

Thanks for the post. Some people who are not in a business where the tool cost is earned in hours or days struggle with justifying the costs. For me, there is no compromise on any equipment and if the TB13" is best for your uses then all is well.

Value is perception , you are totally right - I just dropped $4300 on a TBMBP which will be to keep me going until April or whenever the new iMac comes out [to replace my overheating 2014]. It will then be at home for an after hours work computer, or if I feel lazy and don't want to go into the office [which I can do as I am the boss]. This computer will pay for itself easily in this period and is there just to generate more money.

Also I agree with the cars - I will spend any amount on the tool to get the job done to the best I can, but in no way will waste money on a depreciating asset like a car [if it was my hobby yes, but is just a vehicle]. Cameras on the other hand..........

I used to love upgrading every year to a new machine, but now it seems the cycle is on 2 years, and also the excitement has gone in it - I love my tech but really just need it to work every day, day in day out without issue, with the reassurance I can easily get it repaired / replaced - Apple offers this and no other manufacturer comes close [this is in Australia].

You might well be on the money #29

Yup...a pic of my new Dell 27" in the kitchen is clearly evidence!

A while back I asked critics of the new MBP to offer up samples of their work or even a simple description of how these new laptops were hampering their workflow.

Exactly ONE person gave an actual example. And just like now we had a bunch of...

"Who are YOU to tell us blah blah blah!?"

Well, I've put up more than once. I'll back up what I say.

I don't see that from many people here, who hide behind their keyboards.

To get back on topic - 2016 for many of us with newer MBP`s the value is very much lacking unless you can take advantage of the SSD`s performance. This is not to say the 2016 MBP is not a nice notebook, however it does not represent good value for many reasons.

Q-6

This is a thread made by an insecure teenager living with his mom who is trying to make us believe that hollywood studios use macbook pros for editing and store their work in the cloud. Lol

brilliant. this is how I run my business. love it.

When I worked in film, there was Apple everywhere. It was one of the biggest, most expensive recent films ever BTW but no my role was not editing or visualisation, but did involve modelling. I used a 15"RMBP on that job with a 20" cinema display [then the 27" tbd when it was released], as did most others, except I probably saw more 13"RMBP than 15" if this tells you something.

It is funny what peoples perception of what type of computers are needed in 'industries'............

But you see, frustrated people here (only a few) obviously NEED everyone to be unhappy with their purchase because they are.

If you strike out, some mentalities hate seeing the other guy get even a base hit.

So...no, I don't live in a basement. My mother passed 20 years ago from liver cancer. My dear-old-dad is well-to-do, but my beautiful wife and I are taking care of getting him setup here in LA after too many cold years in NY and PA.

I think the tMBP is a home-run. Or at least a run to 3rd with position to score. Obviously most owners saw it that way too, unless they're lying!

People hide behind keyboards. They'll make any kind of attack and say things they'd never dare say in person. Look at the comments above...truly sad, but it echoes the mentality of failure.

I see you dig cameras....now THAT is a serious addiction. ✌️

Here's the TV show, Unforgettable, setting up for a shoot on my boat...see? Money well spent on a dopey boat!

Might want to think about what your posting, just coming off as really crass. Some here on MR have money, equally they rarely talk about it, with many professional`s on the forum, nor are all behind the view screen.

Here's an admittedly shallow point...

I've been working out here for a short time, but my manager and contacts are "in it" as they say.

You better not show up to a meeting without a nice car and a late model Mac! I mean, you could wear dirty clothes, so long as you're car is over 60K and your Mac is less than 2 years old!

Stupid? You bet.

Funny because I don't see high end money in that kitchen shot.. The cabinets look worn and old as do the counter tops... It's not exactly a millionaire type kitchen if you ask me but hey, as evident by my post above, I am a bum who lives in a box so anything (even his kitchen) is an upgrade over that... LOL

As I said, someone somewhere already has MORE and always will.

My point is that I believe that most of the critics are fakes. They can't or won't afford it. They sure as heck don't need it. And they're upset to see others enjoying it or putting it to real use.

I'm not the only one here who has asked these unhappy folk to post their needs and experience to back up what they claim. Few dare to answer because they're not using these machines for anything. When challenged they offer up youtube videos!

It's really a terrible shame because a lot of hard work went into these new machines. They will grow, but for 1st generation on a new computer, these are really nice.

But when I point out that I can load RAW D810 and Canon 5Ds files 10 at a time while streaming 4K video, and prove it, these detractors have a meltdown. Somehow it's still not good enough for them.

Well, fine. PROVE YOUR POINT. Nothing crass about it. Back up a claim because anyone can lie in a forum. If you say you own the fastest sedan, prove it! If you say you're an astronaut, show me the spacesuit.

It's not hard, IF you're for real. And the people who cry the loudest usually aren't.

I honestly have no idea, however is just not cool to portray yourself in such a manner, just a personality repellent.

Seriously? Do you also believe that the Clinton's are serial killers and Trump will fix the country?

I'm on Facebook for crying out loud.

Seriously? Do you also believe that the Clinton's are serial killers

Well, technically everyone who is set to testify against them just commits suicide by shooting themselves in the head 7 times from a distance of 9 feet....

So...... Serial killers? Naw, everyone just commits 'suicide'...

Hasn't hurt me yet. In fact, people usually love that I don't BS them.
Put up or shut up.

Two weeks ago a fellow was talking up his Porsche GT3 and backhanding my Hellcat as a slower car. He was man enough to back up what he claimed, by first showing me the car online and then in person. Turns out he's a retired racer and forgot more about cars than I'll likely ever know. As I'm currently working on a film that involves NASCAR, it was a fortuitous meeting!

I don't care for people who talk bull, but won't back it up. If I can't back it up, I won't say it. I only wish 99% of the world was as straight forward because life is short. One guy in this very thread was caught red-handed lying about owning the tMBP and he had zero shame about it!

And this all comes down to a simple question: How does the new tMBP negatively impact your professional workflow.

Answers?

And there we have perfection in ignorance, the embracing of fake news to upheld ones own private beliefs and agenda.
It got Trump where he is.

Yep we are the same....... I am not flogging any wealth, as am not super wealthy and can't afford a boat, but really I agree with the point that hardware is quite cheap when you make money with it. If you are not, then yes it is an expensive toy.

Quite simple really, and the macbookpro is not expensive when you take everything into account. It is just perception of value and what you do with the computer. Personally I buy little that does not enhance my business or wellbeing [except for gifts].

And to answer the question - I see no negatives in the new MBP, only positive.

As I'm currently working on a film that involves NASCAR
Hope it's a lot better than Days of Blunder. The NASCAR boys felt pretty screwed over by Hollywood on that one. Heard they invited the cast on a river rafting trip with Ned Beaty as guide.

I'm married and faithful...which is easy because she's hot!

Okay, kiddies...I have to mail out some gifts. You'll have to go on without me for a while.

It's been fun and I do hope no ones feelings were actually harmed in the making of this thread!

Here's a gift from a few years ago...my good sailing buddy and retired leg model out on my 2nd boat...

Life is better with a boat.
