Waiting for the Honda Pilot to gain CarPlay.

Entune is one of the main reasons I won't be shopping Toyota for the next purchase... or at least won't be shopping one with any kind of infotainment (would go aftermarket CarPlay). We have Entune in our Toyota now and it's pretty lame. When the Pilot gets CarPlay and works out bugs, it'll be on my radar as a top contender.

I've had 3 (on my third) of the Pilot body style that ended in 2015. I don't like the new body style. It looks too much like the CR-V, which is my second car in the house, and I don't like it. Looking to trade it in next year, but Honda seems like they are out (not ONLY because they aren't supporting CarPlay on their SUVs). I was thinking of an Explorer, but...

Looks like Ford made a mistake again, the first mistake being using Microsoft's SYNC trash.

So looks like it is number 3. I loved my Jetta back in 2001, but one minor issue (back when their warranty was 24 month/24,000 miles) happened at month 22, but mileage 24,270, and they wouldn't cover it. Since it was a transmission issue, it turned me off their company, but the Tiguan looks pretty good.

I originally wanted to get a Camry or a Corolla, but now it looks like I'll get a Accord or a Civic because Toyota won't support Carplay.

This article is clear erronous, please go to Motor1.com and follow the Carplay link.

FYI: All Ford SYNC3 support both Carplay and Android Auto, SYNC3 is on the 2016 F150, 2016 Escape, 2017 Explorer and more.

Big Omissis: AUDI's Q7, magnificent carplay support.

Mercedes and BMW neglet to suport carplay to follow selling theis overpiced and sub-par Apps, on theis infoainment systems also to bill the navigation maps, soon or later will adopt it.

You're right. 2017 Q7 is first Audi vehicle to support CarPlay in U.S. I thought it was still in Europe only. Added to the list.

I was certain SYNC3 didn't support CarPlay yet, but looking into Ford closer right now.

Also all Porsche Macan Models manufactured from Jan 2016 on will include Car Play (MY 2017).

Added the 2017 Porsche Macan S, GTS and Turbo. Thank you!

Sync3 not the same as "Sync with touch", Sync3 is based on Blackberry's QNX while "Sync with touch" (or whatever is named the former interface) is based on wincrash, youtube is full of videos on Sync3 running carplay and android auto.

I will wait the day until you can say "Siri, drive me home." and she will reply, "all conditions checked, starting the engine."

Seriously, self driving car is no longer a futuristic idea.

Can you show me? Everything I've researched suggests SYNC3 does not support CarPlay. Just Siri.

I know Ford has mentioned CarPlay/Android Auto for SYNC3, but not sure they've released it.

We've still got two more years on our 2014 CRV lease. The '17 or '18 models should have it by the time we're ready.

. . .or maybe Tesla's "affordable" car will have it by the time we turn it in. . .or maybe Porsche's EV. . .

A car without CarPlay is almost as useless to me as a car without an engine. Unbelievable how long it's taking the industry to wake up to giving their customers what they truly want in a road vehicle.

I'd rather take a simple bare bones fun-to-drive vehicle and listen to its engine and exhaust vs having a bunch of gimmicky high tech non-sense.

Speaking of Honda, I really like their "dumb" music system. It's the easiest I've seen. Just one button per input to change inputs, easy to control without even looking at it, plus buttons on the steering wheel for selection and volume. It's hilarious how incredibly bad the Range Rover's fancy touch screen system is in comparison. A lot of the other "dumb" systems are also kinda unintuitive, which is surprising.

Well isn't that the whole point? Apple WILL continue to improve CarPlay over the life of your car, while the built in system will stay forever the same.

But will those improvements be made available (software update?) to older systems when CarPlay is improved or features are added 2 or 3 years down the road, or is this going to be like how Android users have to wait and wait and wait for their handset manufacturer or their carrier to make available Android updates? And many times they never see them.

It's available on all golfs for £100 it's just a software update. In the uk bluemotion and up get it as standard. Below that trim you pay the above fee. Is it worth it? Hell yes!

Sorry for being pessimistic, but I honestly don't think a self-driving car with the functionality you're describing will be widely available to consumers within 100 years. Sure there could soon be technology to make a naive self-driving car, but there are too many legal issues with that, and I still think it's really tough to make it work in all places a normal driver would. Lots of moral/social questions too. If your self-driving car is going to crash and can choose between killing someone else or killing you, what does it do? Will human drivers take advantage of self-driving cars in traffic?

Besides the fact that they already have image problems with the Diesel emissions scandal, what does it say of VW that they have opted not to feature CarPlay in their Touareg, the company's highest price vehicle, developed in conjunction with Porsche off the Cayenne platform. They may sell more Passats, Tiguans and Golfs, but it is a shame they choose not to integrate it in what is their luxury vehicle. It is doubtful you would see BMW or Mercedes leave out their higher end cars.

car and driver said:
we asked a Ford representative for confirmation, we were told that the company has not yet announced timing for the Apple and Google device integrations, but that Sync 3 will be either standard or optional on every U.S.-market Ford vehicle by the end of 2016..

I picked up a 2016 Golf a few weeks ago. The Car play is really nice, when it works. But for the first 2 weeks it didn't work at all, it would first detect my phone then crash and the phone wasn't detected again until maybe 5 days ago. It's been fine since then and quite useful.

Unfortunately no wireless carplay for VW though :( Rumor has it hardware is capable of it. Hopefully VW (or Apple?) releases a software update to add that. Wireless Carplay would be amazing.

- Fiat Chrysler Automobiles brands, including
Alfa Romeo
,
Chrysler
,
Dodge
,
Fiat
,
Jeep
,
RAM
and
Abarth
, will not support CarPlay in 2016 models, and the auto group has not announced future plans. Ferrari is the sole exclusion.

Ferrari is no longer owned by Fiat. They are an independent company as of Octobee 2015. They've also always been fiercely independent.

Side note - Fiat Chyslers infotainment app sync thing is ****ing dire, as is their software in general.

I'm sorry, but I will take an OEM infotainment system any day if it means CarPlay requires a wired connection. My 2015 VW GTI came with a 6 inch iPod accessory cable with the old 30-pin connector that is housed in a cramped compartment under the climate controls. Access to that every time I enter my car would be a PITA. I will never return to a wired connection again due to the convenience of bluetooth and keyless entry. Both my phone and car key remain in my pocket eliminating the pre-ignition fumbling.

You're using a car now aren't you? so how is it useless?....
His car doesn’t have an engine. Up until Car Play came out the wheels and bodyshell were missing that certain something too. I mean the look, safety, space, handling, investment, buying/running costs etc etc were all things that didn’t matter one little bit. Till now.

Now we have CarPlay the world is complete. It is the third coming, (the second coming was the iPhone).

It’s a nice addition but dang I’m not basing an investment of that size on that one ridiculous feature which lets face it HUD/Siri or not reduces your attention at the wheel.
