Ok, I'll say it! Why oh Why cannot Apple put the I7 quad..the 3.1 or why not the 4.2 thats in the New iMac
into a mac mini? Comon Apple! I"d pay $3000 for that!

I'm so glad I bought mine six months ago when it previously took them three years to update.... what a slap in the face...

How about people who bought the October 2010 13" Core 2 MacBook Pro when Apple updated it to Core i5 in July 2011? That was a lot more than a 20% increase in performance.

I don't see any real benefit to upgrading from my mid-2014 as the 32-bit and 64-bit numbers are better than current models (comparing my 2.8GHz i7 to the newer 2.9GHz i7). I hope the high end builds are better.

Too bad the screen size isn't 20% larger. My 2012 15" rMBP screen looks very small to me.

Bring back the 17".

It's also a strange thing to see Intel not giving L3 Cache of 8MB since the 2012 i7 top tier models..

ive returned my 2016 last month, but i just had this one, around 16% increase in speed here but i feel the keyboard lost that warm sound keys click, and from 8 hours with music, safari, mail (both latest macOS sierra) now after 11 hours and 11 minutes my 15" MBP died.

Does it perform the tasks in an adequate amount of time to meet your needs?
If not then www.ebay.com sell it and buy the new one.

This happens nearly 100% of the time a model is upgraded if it's a computer, phone, tablet, car, TV or game console. They aren't going to wait or stop upgrading.

What about the 13 inchers? I just dropped some cash on one...
Just got my base 128gb 13" 2017 today, only have GB3 to test with, but in 64 bit it managed 3850/8840. In comparison, my 2012 base rMBP 15" i7 etc did 3150/12100. The 2017 is a work of engineering art, well pleased with the quality, so am sure you will be delighted with yours.

Yeah, I don't normally care about these things and I really do like my machine, which I needed in January, but I do feel up to 20% screwed.

IIRC, Intel said the difference is supposed to be in power consumption, not performance.
I'd say sell it to someone who's looking for a discount and isn't as concerned about specs, and then buy the new one.

well it didn't come out six months ago, he just bought it six months ago. The iPad 3 > 4 was literally 6 months later the new one came out after the "old" one was released.
Yeah that iPad 3 was a real ball-buster. I've still got that slow-as-hell slab taking up space in my desk.

My 2012 Retina Macbook Pro is now 5 years old and still holding quite well. Single core score of 3606 and multicore 11748 isn't quite off from 4632/15747 of the latest.

Only <30% difference from a 5 year old device? No way I'll pay another grand for that (after resale) lol.

Not to discourage people from buying rMBP though. They're good investment for long term use.

That's just the CPU. There are other things like SSD/RAM I/O performance which the mid-2012 15" rMBP just won't be able to keep up. The NVMe/PCIe SSD is a lot faster and with lower latency than the SATA 3 SSD in the old rMBP (Apple moved to PCIe with the late 2013 model moved to NVMe from AHCI with the late 2016 models).

If your compare the SATA3 SSD performance to the current NVMe/PCIe, we're looking at a jump from around 400 MB/s read and write to over 2GB/s. That's a huge gain.

Then there's the GPU. The GT650M is old and can't run most of the games released in the last two years.

Plus there's Thunderbolt 3 which allows you to add external GPU and brings the performance of the MBP up another notch or two. That's not possible with the mid-2012 model. And I'm speaking as someone who also has been running the mid-2012 model for the last 5 years. This year is the first year when my rMBP starts to feel slow.

It's just a speed bump.

Got burned on that. :(

That was, unlike the situation with the MBP 2017 and 2016, a significant issue, since the iPad 3s were significantly underpowered. Bad GPU that couldn't support the new Retina display.
