Finally an iPad worth buying. I have to ask: is this foreshadowing the removal of the lighting cable from the 2019 iPhone?

I don’t get the external display thing, if this is just mirroring the iPad display as publicity shots seem to show, then what’s the point? Mirrored, borders either size, without any increase in usable area. It’s just completely redundant.

I mean, the road is pretty clear for what could then happen at wwdc19. That’s when we get a non mirrored second screen of some description (iPad screen would need to become a big input device like a keyboard, trackpad and Touch Bar all in one) and it could be glorious. Especially for productivity.

But until then, ACTUAL use cases are, what? Keynote presentations on TV that could be achieved previously using lightning to HDMI? Is that it?

Someone else please enlighten me?

Will you be able to charge the pencil if you have a 3rd-party case?

On my iPads I have always just used a basic silicone slim case "back" — no front cover or cutouts for keyboard connection. But such a case would cover up the edge on the new iPad, where the magnetic pencil-charging happens.

Always amused at the “shock and anger” that I read when Apple releases a new product with price. People on MacRumors should know by now that Apple is not your cheapest option.

Or most economic, or most powerful, or with the widest feature set, or with anything other than its Fashion statement carefully crafted by Apple advertising.

Apple has one leading feature these days and that is data security. If anyone else address this in their product, then its game over for Apple.

It hasn’t been long since they got to have a look at these devices and already they’re saying the tiny bezels and squared off pencil are more comfortable for longer drawing sessions than previous models? Did they bring a time machine to test that, or just pull that opinion out of somewhere you can’t mention on stage with Apple in the interest of “healthy” free expression?

That’s one more tech reviewer to add to my “opinions are worthless” list, to be sure. Can’t wait to see what actual tech reviewers have to say about that topic.

I would say the eco system itself is also a big one. With all my Macs, iPads, iPhones, watches, I couldn't imagine getting an Android phone at this point.

I’m guessing you’d probably have to remove the case to charge it.

I'm sure it does work but not the other way around for 'old' iPad Pros
Someone might have said this but to pair the old pencil with it you’d need a lightning port?

I wonder if an adaptor would work though.
[doublepost=1540926943][/doublepost]This is an absolutely incredible looking iPad but I’d immediately need a usb-c to lightning adaptor or I’d have to fork over a hell of a lot for all the various dongles I’ve accumulated!

Seriously though this is beautiful and I’m contemplating selling my iMac to upgrade my iPad. How weird things have got in the computer space. (I also have a MBP so I don’t necessarily need multiple Macs..)

It has the best software for various industries. The iPad is absolutely unsurpassed now as a portable (2D) art creation device. And that’s before Adobe we’re forced to up their game by the competition and release versions of their suite we’ve been asking for for years.

I’m curious how well Face ID works when the iPad is laying flat.

But what about the display and aspect ratio of the 11 inch? Res and aspect ratio of the 12.9 seems to remain the same, while the 11 inch seems to have more pixels vertically than the 10.5 inch iPad Pro and the same amount of pixels in width.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who’s been thinking this. I’m intrigued to know if I could do my PS workflow on an iPad but I’m not sure I want to drop the pounds and pence this year if PS doesn’t come out for 12 months and really does need the 2019 ipad to fly.

I wonder whether this could finally replace my trusty 2012 11” Mac Air but not being able to run full Visio and project on an iPad yet is still putting me off... I think that’s my last two apps that would need to go over...
You must be the overseas version of myself. Hi. I live in Project and Visio. I would love these on a portable device. Well, an Apple device.

64gb as the entry level option for 800 bucks is just uncalled for in 2018. Should of started at 128gb and up honestly
Couldn't agree more...but they do this to up-sell you. For most people, 64GB on an iPad is not enough. Thus, the real iPad is the 256GB. Plenty of people will buy the 64...and then complain later that it's not enough storage. But you've already purchased. This 64 to 256 thing will continue as long as Apple can get away with it.

According to this page... https://www.apple.com/apple-pencil/select/

The Apple Pencil 2 will NOT work with the older iPad Pros and the first Apple Pencil will NOT work with the new iPad Pros.

Yeah the price is starting to bother me. I do think that the updates on these will slow down which might help offset it a bit. They used to refresh them yearly, now we are at 18 months. Since this update throws in a lot of features that I have been waiting for for awhile, this might be my last iPad for awhile.

I'm impressed by the Photoshop work during the keynote. That said, still not a replacement for a proper computer. (Sorry Tim). We need MacOS on the iPad for that to happen one day.
I just think it is an amazing companion tool for artists but not a replacement to the Mac.
Good job Apple.

and Keyboard and Pen for free, 4K display, dedicated graphics, expandable memory, bigger display, bigger SSD, better audio for anywhere $1000-$1450 i7 8th Gen... Not sure who would be paying so much for content consumption... May be I am wrong since this is Apple tablet...

I wonder how long some people will hang on to the ridiculous content consumption only idiocy.

That seems to make sense, but I've heard designers mention before that absolutely flat tablets are very difficult to pick up from flat tables; it's almost like a suction effect. Maybe Apple wanted to avoid that here?

Not the case. Had a pre-bump iPad and am considering sanding away the whole camera bump from my Pro now that it’s out of the question to sell it to upgrade, then just epoxy over so the exposed bits don’t become a point of entry for ESD.

There is no downside to a flat surface and no upside to the bump. To get real suction you need an optically flat back, and this is nowhere near that flat. And even with an optically flat surface you can still just slide it off, not that that’s relevant here.

They don’t have a good way to make a cheap but decent camera that avoids a bump, and won’t settle for an inferior camera, nor make anything other than a 2-in-1 that compromises drawing use for a camera that’s compromised for all else. Bigger sensor, gradient index lens, pay sigma for the patents to alter the chip so chromatic aberration becomes fixable in software, pay varifocal for the liquid lenses to replace mechanical ones or move to MEMS; it can be done, but it’s hard work and would probably mean paying a cut to others and adding back the bezels you hold the device by when drawing (you can’t lay it flat for that, after all, unless you add a case and double the weight).

They couldn’t even be bothered to do any surface structuring to make this a device suited for drawing without CTS and fatigue from improper pen use.

Wacom and Cintiq breathed a sigh of relief today.

Great update for the IPP and I would be tempted to buy any of the two to replace my 2017 10.5" device. The price increases are substantial though: I bought my 64GB 10.5 (MSRP $649) for $500 in a micro center sale, sold my iPad Air for $200 and invested into the ASK and Pencil. Total net cost $550 ex Apple Care. The new hardware (64GB 11") including new ASK/Folio and pencil gets you close to $1,200. I might get $400 for the old set up. WOW!

But when it cracks it will not be Tim picking up the pieces.

Going by the telltale tremors in his hand and voice and the motor stereotypies of dopamine agonists that are the first line treatment for Parkinson’s, I doubt Tim is planning on being around when the time comes that Apple needs the goodwill they have been burning the last few years.

IANAD, but I’m worried about his health after some of those closeups.

Did they say if the now "old" Apple Pencil works with the new iPad Pro? Hope so...
I'd imagine no, there's no way to pair it as there's no lightning port. I suppose you could get a USB C to lightning dongle, but I don't know if apple would support it in the firmware for these iPads.

Anyone know when it will be available in stores? I know its scheduled for preorders today and delivery Nov. 7th but I was wondering if any announcement of store availability has been made?

I chatted with bestbuy.com whom to no surprise had no clue apple even announced this today
