Hence the concern, in the long run, that Apple is becoming a high end niche premium brand while others like Samsung, Amazon, and Google slowly start take the rest.
True in a sense. If apples margins stay the same or grow through the price increase they need not appeal to everyone just own the lions share of the market. And with how impressive items like their watch have been they have insurance companies footing the bills for them now.

No X-Code though?

My first thought when I saw the connectivity to the external display with USB-C was that Xcode was coming to the iPad Pro at next year’s WWDC. I’m probably wrong, but with the performance improvements in the A12X Bionic, I don’t think it’s crazy.

Please explain your snarky. the Files.app is a real file system, as are many available third party apps, I use documents by Readdle. I also use Onedrive, and Google Drive which are fully integrated in the Files.app and into Documents. documents also allows me to connect to USB drives and my time capsule Seems like you are stuck somewhere on ios 10.

But maybe your snark was not clear, I interpreted you to mean file browser. The actual file system, is well a real file system
The important function of file system is to let all apps to works it (transparently for the user) and not to have a special app for it.

I see two people who don't understand the difference between a file system and a file manager / application.

Might as well buy a laptop at that price point, at least then you'll get a real filesystem.
For me, a large reason to buy is to paint/draw, etc using the Pencil. None that can can be done on a laptop. So this is a laptop that does more- in my mind.

And it has a file system, so, not sure what you mean?

A UK software company puts out what seems to me an excellent alternative (Affinity Photo, not to mention Designer) to PS already for the iPad and Mac as well. It is far less costly and runs perfectly fast on my 10.5” iPad Pro. Have you considered supporting them?

Just downloaded the trial for the mac and sadly within 10 mins two items I use in PS aren't available (confirmed as development requests in the forums), so I suspect it's not currently for me. I'll take another look in the new year though when my photo "season" stops (I do a very small amount of paid work around now and I have honed my workflow over probably 10 years with the limited time I have to edit post session!).

Yeah, I was thinking something similar. Powering an external display certainly feels Xcode friendly. Mind you, you'd then want trackpad and cursor support.

I thought the exact same...
The cynic in me thinks that they deliberately made the bump, so that they can sell their keyboard, which covers up the back and the bump. Ugh.

They don't need a high-quality camera in these things... put a lower-res version and get rid of the bump. Just put in a "good enough" one... I mean seriously, who does photography with these, anyways?

I have touch on my HP Windows 10 work notebook. I disable the touch feature. The application scene is worse. Adobe Acrobat is just awful now since it tries to accommodate both touch and mouse, and fails miserably at both.

Nice to have the choice though. Something Apple fails to give you.

I know there are going to be plenty on the side of wanting high quality cameras in their tech, regardless of size. I just wish that they would save the few millimeters for a bigger battery but Ive's push for thinner devices is making that impossible.

Wait, you're suggesting that Apple is trying to get you to spend more!? Say it ain't so!

I never really understood why people have such a problem with the bump. Get a case that accommodates. The bumps are here to stay. People would def complain if there was a lower res camera on it. Cant win either way

No, you can't, that's for sure.

I think it was such a strange change from the usual design aesthetic that Apple had initiated with the iPhone 4 and 5; that smooth back suddenly looked weird when the 6's bump arrived. I've always tried to go nekkid with my iDevices since I love the design so when my phone sits on the desk with a slight wobble, it just picks at that OCD part of my brain.

Not the case. Had a pre-bump iPad and am considering sanding away the whole camera bump from my Pro now that it’s out of the question to sell it to upgrade, then just epoxy over so the exposed bits don’t become a point of entry for ESD.

There is no downside to a flat surface and no upside to the bump. To get real suction you need an optically flat back, and this is nowhere near that flat. And even with an optically flat surface you can still just slide it off, not that that’s relevant here.

They don’t have a good way to make a cheap but decent camera that avoids a bump, and won’t settle for an inferior camera, nor make anything other than a 2-in-1 that compromises drawing use for a camera that’s compromised for all else. Bigger sensor, gradient index lens, pay sigma for the patents to alter the chip so chromatic aberration becomes fixable in software, pay varifocal for the liquid lenses to replace mechanical ones or move to MEMS; it can be done, but it’s hard work and would probably mean paying a cut to others and adding back the bezels you hold the device by when drawing (you can’t lay it flat for that, after all, unless you add a case and double the weight).

They couldn’t even be bothered to do any surface structuring to make this a device suited for drawing without CTS and fatigue from improper pen use.

Wacom and Cintiq breathed a sigh of relief today.

If that's right, then I agree. The iPad camera is a far less important feature than drawing stability.

$799 for the 11" iPP 4GB/64GB is a joke when you can get the Surface Pro 6 i5/8GB/128GB bundle with Surface type cover keyboard and Surface pen for the same price.

I like it. I'm in the group of being a bit too expensive and could basically make a very powerful PC for the same costs. Different devices and all. Just hard to justify unless I was rolling in a lot of extra money.

If it’s one thing I have learnt using Apple products over the years, it’s that specs alone rarely ever tell the full story with regards to the user experience it affords.

The iPad does the things I want it to do, the way I like it to. I have a work-issued windows tablet and I find I tend to use it more as a laptop (albeit one with a broken hinge) and less so as a tablet.

So in a sense, I find they complement, rather than compete with, each other. Sucks that the iPad Pro costs so much, but I am interested in the 12.9” model, and you couldn’t pay me enough to choose a surface tablet in its place.

They issued as a windows tablet to use at work a few years ago but nobody would use it. It got taken away. The laggy, slow, buggy windows PC’s are bad enough. Because I work with patients we aren’t allowed to bring our own devices.

For me the iPad Pro was the main artist of the show.

I'm an owner of the 10.5" and the iPhone X and was ready to give the iPad Pro away to my half. I was truly impressed until I've noticed that they bumped the price up and than pause ...

This is something that is really starting to bug me quite a lot every year! I remember the times of SJ when they launched more advanced stuff at a lower price than the competition flagships. That for me was another touch of genius of SJ when they launched the iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4S ... the devices that made the revolution not what came after to milk his legacy with the customers ... I felt then, that the company had a sense of fair play with their loyal customers. Even if you were a bit skint on money one could still do it. Remember when Apple decided to offer the updates of iOS and macOS for free and the iWorks suite? A good will between both parties if you will. This generated the Apple Golden age ... That is how I felt the world could change.

What I see now with this increasing price bumps is something totally different. It's not about changing the world anymore but making a buck out of anything, including their stupid keyboard. This is usually the indication of the decline of a civilisation .... The Trumps of the world and the Wall Street became their best friend I guess. Never though that artists were the ones with the money in this world. So I guess the product its about making you feel like an artist even though one has no talent!

Yes the new version should be better than the previous at the same price, isn't that the point? Anyone can make a better version at a higher price. The the initial iPad launch, probably the most difficult of the iPads to get done right, was $300 cheaper in a time where the value of the dollar was way down and competition in this space was extremely weak.

It wasn't so long ago - 2017 - when people were screaming about Apple pricing the iPhone X at $1k. Who was gonna buy that small screen at that price? We know how that went. So clearly people are willing to pay the prices which nullifies this ongoing "Apple's whatever is too expensive" narrative. We know, but people buy them.

The argument that newer technology(which costs more) should be the same price as old tech makes no sense whatsoever. Jobs may have liked that idea in principle, but even if he was around today, that philosophy would be out the door already.

Not only at the same price, but maybe cheaper at points actually. It is this idea that allows you now to buy an iPad or an iPhone at $1000 after millennia of innovations. It is this idea that today allows you to buy a car and a house ..........

What I do know, is that this constant rise in prices way, way above inflation its aggressive to the customer even if people still buy it! There are rises in price and rises in price. No one can say that it's not aggressive. Me as a customer, I'm feeling this as an aggression. I am one of those that decided to be all in with Apple back when they launched the 3GS. A vote of confidence on my part. People disguise it, like to pretend that they can afford with their credit cards and so on, like to pretend that they are more than actually are all the time. But no matter the amount of feel good stores and emojis they deploy people are feeling it, the aggression. I have a family of 4 so one can imagine! Or is this just for single man or woman, or couples that live for themselves and no one else?

I'm just apprehensive for them because when the customer starts to be aggressive back, you don't want that because goes out of control. You start getting not only unfavourable customers customer but also media, since journalists were also customers, humans. The examples of this happening you have for instance the Windows Phone phenomena, the customers aggressively rejected it, and the tech was not really that bad. It happened before to Apple a long time ago ...

If tou have no long term strategy or vision of what's next, and people are buying and money is in, than price it up and hope people follow! But if you really have a vision and feel it, you have other options. That is the difference between SJ as a CEO and TC it seams.

It would be a mess and would drain a lot of resources. The end result would look a lot like iOS but with apps not designed for touch.

What's the resolution got to do with a bump?

Let’s assume for a second there is no merit in Apple’s price increases. None whatsoever. As long as people buy, Apple will price accordingly. When people stop buying due to price, Apple will reduce. But as long as there’s a market, don’t hold your breath for reductions. I’m not saying Apple isn’t alienating some people with its pricing. Look at villages in some African countries for instance. Do you think they can afford Apple’s devices? Should Apple build a $100 phone to satisfy those markets? In a perfect world yes, but we don’t live in a perfect world.
Ideally, those people shouldn’t only have Android to turn to. Unfortunately, that’s the cheap option.

Also, there’s the issue of duty to shareholders to which Apple is beholden. This is a reality I am not particularly fond of and wish there was another way. Making profit the primary driver for any company is just wrong.

As to the issue of making things better for less. I don’t know where you live, but home prices in many parts of the U.S.continue to rise even as builders use cheaper materials and cut corners. The world simply isn’t perfect or fair. Never will be.

I do sympathize with you and the plight of so many families who may want into Apple’s ecosystem. I know what many do is pass older models down. So everyone may not have the very latest iPhone. I’ll be giving my X from last year to a family member who is currently using my 6S. That in turn will be passed on to another family member. Not saying this is perfect or possible for everyone.

As for Windows Phone, I don’t think it was pricing that put people off. Folks were too invested in Samsung at the time which pretty much had a grip on the Android market. It also didn’t help that Microsoft really dropped the ball with Windows Phone. However, if I had to choose between Windows and Android, it would be Windows every time.

What we need is more competition. Until we see a new, secure OS enter the market, I think Apple is it.

MS should just have a holiday each year where just hang their heads in shame over what happened with their mobile phones.

What's the point of designing and promoting it as being so slim if you have to add a bulky case to actually use it.

What would satisfy everyone is an option to order the 12.9 iPad Pro without a rear camera at all.

With Windows Phones people simply rejected iI, no matter the pricing. That is how bad the MS / Customer relationship was. As I said the tech was not really that bad.

Anyway rest my case. If people are required to spend a lot of money in the golden 3, smartphone, smart watch, mobile PC, eventually a desktop, there is very little budeget for proper home automation, VR ... so on and so forth. This at a mass scale.

You see, high prices justified just to keep or enlarge profit margins can actually strangle innovation.
