YES, this. In a lecture it is deafening. I went back to the older MacBook Pro. I wasn’t comfortable making that much din. Ugh. I really hope the new one is quieter but it doesn’t really sound like it.

It certainly was an in academic settings. I used OneNote to record lectures as I typed notes so that I could return to the content if I missed something or just needed to re-hear it. Unless I was sitting right in front of a professor, or they were using a microphone, it would take several listens to hear what was said with all the keyboard clatter.

didn't see that one coming! not..

posted on here earlier, that it must be the case. However, I think this is a band-aide solution. They will re-engineer it. I'm telling you now. Wouldn't be surprised if the rumored low cost book is tested out with something new.

So iFixIt has done their teardown and identified that the butterfly switches are now surrounded by a flexible membrane barrier to help keep out contaminants.

And that would explain why the sound is dampened and perhaps also why they're so eager to advertise it as a feature for making the keyboard less noisy.

How many people are REALLY having this issue in the real world?

I tell you: ZERO.

Huh? Are you being serious? Maybe I'm missing something. Are you really saying nobody has keyboard problems or did something get lost in translation? Was that supposed to be read sarcastically?

The basis of volume comparison for the MacBook keyboard should be 2 generations ago. These keyboards are unacceptably loud and annoying. Has anyone been in a meeting with someone pounding away on one of these keyboards? Let me tell you, it's painfully loud and disruptive.

why have i wasted the last 20 minutes of my life listening to "keyboard clicking" videos?

I know plenty of developers that go out of their way to use the older models of keyboards just for their "clacky" sound.

Never buying another Macbook Pro until these garbage butterfly keyboards are replaced with keys that travel, and are much quieter. The previous generation keyboards were vastly superior to this butterfly crap.

These keyboards make for a surprisingly lackluster user experience given the premium machines they input. I love my MBP and my MB, but they are noisy in meetings. It can be... embarrassing.

The keyboard didn’t bother me per se but for a $3000 laptop... yes quieter would have been better. I don’t understand why it took 3 years to figure it out.

Off the top of my head, 45w vs 15w I think. I could be misremembering that so you may wish to wait until someone else more knowledgable confirms or denies.

Touch Bar version used to be 45, and nTB used to be 15 up till 2017. Do not know of these new 2018 quad core chips.

There is no accurate way to measure the constant of 'finger pressure' or 'finger impact' to validate your experiment.

If you had programmed a robot hand to carry out the experiment this would be different.

My work machine goes from work dock to home dock. My home machines live in a dock. I never touch the keys. Even if I did I couldn't complain about key noise. I used to use Blue switches. There's no laptop keyboard that could be considered too loud if you've used Blues. I have since switched to Browns. My wife is happier therefore my life is infinitely better. My co-workers are happier as well, but who cares..

I’m going to be honest with you Mustang, I have no idea a lot of what you’re posting, as another member alluded to also, but the most important thing in your post, is certainly the bolded. Otherwise, my response is I concur.

Let's do a real test: use it in a train and count how many pissed off people frown at you.

Apologies bud. My IRL nerd group is into mechanical keyboards (big time). Logic dictates if I'm into something then the whole world is into something and... well, as you can see "logic" doesn't really mean what I think it does.:D Also, never go down the rabbit hole that is the world of mechanical keyboards.

edit: my original quote was just my long, drawn-out, circuitous way of saying, "I agree with you. Mac laptop keyboards never seemed loud."

Asks innocently, why so? ;)

I know, I know.
/Mustang writes 5 page dissertation on switches - single spaced
/forces macinsoshmac to subscribe to newsletter extolling the virtues of metal keycaps
/asks for blood sample to ensure worthiness

That's just to get the map that leads to the door of the guy who will tell you how to get to the Lyft driver who has the Waze routing to the rabbithole.:p:D
