Exactly.

I have a hunch that these were ready in "Late 2018" when Apple expected to release Airpower. Had to be a tough call, hold off on the Airpods Gen2 until Airpower so people dont buy aftermarket charging mats or release them without. This makes sense on why Gen 1's were so hard to find at the end of last year - they were producing Gen 2.

Unfortunately for Apple, it seems they didn't get Airpower working for this launch either but they had to release these Airpods (gen 2) because of the amount of stock and it's getting too close to Airpods 2 (gen 1) release at the end of this year. If Airpower was to come any time soon we should have seen an announcement yesterday. People are going to look at closer at wireless charging now that they have two or three devices (iPhone and Airpods and Watch) that can benefit from it.

Agree 100%.

I think our theory has been scuppered slightly! https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...ber-weirdness-and-an-airpower-theory.2175853/

Ordered the updated AirPods with the wireless charging case and received email confirmation on March 20, 7:18 AM MDT. There was no in-store pickup option. March 27-29 is the current ETA, Order in Progress.
My wife ordered me first generation AirPods for my birthday, unaware the second generation were coming out. We took those to an Apple store in Kansas City to return them March 26; the store said it wasn't expecting any 2nd gen pods in stock before April 1.

So, we ordered a pair from the online Apple store with case engraving. Right now, the delivery date is estimated to be April 26-30.
