Yeah, no, I wasn't thinking a search UI. I was thinking something like it shows you a grid of ~24 emoji, and when you tap it, it gives you a new grid of emoji related to the first one. I figure you do it twice and you reach the one you actually want, and then maybe you swipe on it or something to actually add it.

Oh! It could be great for when you want to be silly and add a whole string of related emoji! Talking about a party and just tap the first party emoji and then it gives you a whole grid of party emojis!

I like this idea. Do people like this idea? Would people pay for it*? Should I develop it?

*I'd do it for free on literally any other platform, but Apple hates free apps and punishes developers for making them with an annual $99 fee.
I’m a designer. You’re a developer? We could work together on it if you’d like. I do full stack web development as well but only know enough Objective C to fix small problems (haven’t dealt with Swift much). Seems like it could be interesting, but wouldn’t be surprised if Apple replicated it within a few years. If you wanted it to become popular and make money you could do in app purchases to unlock certain functionality. Not sure what that would be but could probably figure out something to charge extra for. Or just do a one-time fee to keep things simple. Not sure.

Not Apple. The Unicode Consortium. One working group in the consortium keeps approving the addition of new emoji to Unicode, and Apple and every other computer maker then has to go implement them. The anger / frustration / annoyance directed at Apple (over this matter) is entirely misplaced.
Precisely. I replied to maflynn as well about this. The bile regurgitated at Apple over the UC standards is pretty ignorant, and unfitting of a moderator. No response yet.

I think, although I don’t know for certain, that emojis are controlled by a 3rd party that tries to coordinate releases so they are available across phone brands. So an Apple user can send an Android user a text containing an emoji and it is roughly the same on both phones.

Animoji’s I think are currently Apple only.

As far as I know, that third party just defines the Unicode, like an identifier. For example, they agree '5572' refers to a happy face, so :apple: designs a happy face and inserts it on every 5572 from the source on their devices. When google finds a 5572 on their devices it inserts its own designed happy face and so on.

For some reason I thought I read somewhere Apple was going to also include emojis for hearing aids in an upcoming update. Any news on this?

Ahead of the impending arrival of Unicode 11 on June 5, Emojipedia today published an article about all of the emoji characters that will be launching on Apple devices later this year. While these characters were known, the site also looked forward a bit and briefly detailed what users can expect from Unicode 12 coming in March 2019.

On the short list for impending release in 2019 are the Flamingo and White Heart, which are the two "most requested" emojis by Emojipedia readers this year. Otherwise, the following emoji candidates have been drafted for potential launch next year: Diving Mask, Axe, Waffle, Diya Lamp, and Hindu Temple. All of these candidates have also received mockups, seen below, except Waffle.

At this time, these emojis are still only candidates for inclusion in Unicode 12, "and no decisions have been made about the final emoji list for 2019." Emojipedia has been expanding the Unicode 12 candidates list over the past few weeks, now including characters like Yawning Face, Ballet Shoes, Sloth, Butter, Stethoscope, Ringed Planet, and more[.]

I wasn't implying anything about that, just saying it's not what this article is about (and speaking of actually seeing these, it won't be anything even close to a couple of months before any of these emojis might even make an appearance, given that it would still be sometime into 2019 before any of them are even approved to be part of the Unicode standard).
Right.... which is exactly what my comment was about. Stay on target.

Yup, every June the Unicode consortium adds new emoji, and in September Apple becomes compliant with the standard.

If Apple didn’t update, you wouldn’t be able to receive the new emoji your friends with Android might send you. And posters here at MacRumors would complain that Apple can’t even update emoji on time (“since Jobs died” / “under Tim Cook” snark semi-optional).
Ur so smart!!!!11!! Now u just need to be able to understand sarcasm when you come across it lol.

Seems like the replies were in fact quite on target.

As a follow-up to my previous post, I simply must know...
Pile-of-Poo-Emoji.png

Whose poop actually comes out looking like soft-serve chocolate ice cream? o_O You can't even get real soft-serve to cascade as beautifully as this pile of poo supposedly does. You've got to be gyrating around the toilet seat to drop a deuce like that. (And if your poo is the consistency of soft-serve ice cream, you've also got some health issues, my friend.)
