Update - Sep 2: The Elec has again reported that Apple plans to release an iPad Pro with 3D sensing camera technology early next year:Update - Aug 27: In an email to MacRumors, a representative for Derkwoo Electronics claimed that The Elec's report contained "wrong information" and "something that is not true about us." The Elec has since deleted its article. Original story follows.

Apple plans to release a new iPad Pro with 3D sensing rear cameras in March 2020, according to Korean website The Elec.

The report, citing unnamed industry sources, claims that Korean contract manufacturer Derkwoo Electronics will provide some of the components for the 3D sensing camera modules, including stiffeners and brackets. Mass production of those parts will supposedly begin towards the end of 2019.

The rear 3D sensing is said to be powered by time-of-flight technology, which measures the time that it takes for a laser or LED to bounce off of objects in a room, providing an accurate 3D map of the surroundings.

While the iPhone is expected to adopt a similar time-of-flight system next year, the report suggests that the iPad Pro will adopt the technology six months before the iPhone. Specifically, the new iPad Pro models would be released in March 2020, while new iPhones would likely follow in September.

This lines up with a January 2019 report from Bloomberg that claimed a laser-powered 3D camera could debut first on an iPad Pro as early as spring 2020, but Bloomberg more recently reported that Apple plans to refresh the iPad Pro line by the end of 2019, so Apple's roadmap is not entirely clear.

TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also said there is an over 50 percent probability that the iPad Pro adopts time-of-flight technology in the fourth quarter of 2019 or first quarter of 2020.

Apple would be breaking precedent by refreshing the iPad Pro in March 2020, as the tablet has gone roughly 18 months between hardware updates since first launching in November 2015 -- the second-generation 12.9-inch model was released in June 2017, followed by third-generation models in November 2018.

It's also worth considering that the iPad rarely receives new features before the iPhone, with exceptions including LTE on the iPad 3 before the iPhone 5 in 2012, and the iPad receiving A4 and A5 chips before the iPhone.

Given that Bloomberg and Japanese blog Mac Otakara expect an iPad Pro refresh by the end of 2019, it is possible the March 2020 timeframe is inaccurate and that next year's iPad Pro models launch in the fall instead, which would better space out the 2019 and 2020 refreshes and allow rear 3D sensing to debut on the iPhone.

3D sensing rear cameras coming to both the iPhone and iPad is not much of a surprise as Apple pushes further into augmented reality.

As additional reports surface, the iPad Pro's roadmap should become clearer.

I predict there will be new iPhones next year on September. Will Macrumors finally write an article for me now?

my 1st gen ipad 12.9 is showing its age, slight burn in on the bottom, occasional lag here and there, battery life not what it used to be. if this is true thn i'll hold off til the new ipad.
iPad Air2 still runs smooth as butter. Even on iOS 13.1.

The iPad camera is an example of Apple not getting their market.

The common use case for the iPad camera is capturing white boards in meetings. Where is the killer ocr in notes to transform whiteboard writing into notes, charts and diagrams. Yes, a hard problem. But one which will sell more iPads in business than AR games.

For example, it took MICROSOFT to figure out to use camera to convert tables and charts on print outs to native excel via the the camera. This should have been Apple showing killer innovation with the iPad.

I love Apple leadership. But the same people thinking the same way made them miss the importance of displays, pro macs, ports, etc.

Mine doesn’t. It’s pretty good but the iPad Air 2 is definitely showing its age.

Mind you, I also have an iPad Pro 10.5” with which to compare. The iPad Pro’s A10X is very noticeably faster, and the extra memory also helps a lot to minimize the frequency of Safari tab reloads.

Plus the iPad Air 2 has problems with 4K HEVC video playback, but all recent iPhones can record in 4K HEVC.

So, what's the consensus now, are we getting a new pro this year or do we have to wait for 2020?

Anyone seen using an iPad to take a photo, when they have a more than capable camera phone in their pocket should be shot on sight!!!!

yes please shoot everything more intelligent than u!
Making a snap of a flipchart really needs that overpowered phone from your pocket.
No don’t use the iPad which You have at hand ... follow the stupido and grab your phone from your pocket!

I don’t expect iPhone will ever switch to USB-C.

and You are wrong, ... maybe!
Tim Hollywood is only predictable in doing the wrong moves, some might be right!

"Breaking Precedent"? No, launching the next Pros in March 2020 would be 16-ish months, less than the usual 18 months that Apple refreshes. I think you have your math a tad incorrect there. ;)
Came out 11th, November 2018... If we go by past releases in March for iPads it is somewhere in the halfway or last quarter mark. So it'd be from 11th November to lets say March 16 2020... That would be
16 Months, 3 Days, 23 Hours, 7 Minutes and 17 Seconds
I'd say that feels more like what Apple would usually do... but they may release them this Holiday, It'd be weird, but not unheard of by any means.

Kallum.

That makes the most sense, but maybe Apple is changing up their release schedules. *weird.

infact 2021 unless You want defective crap. Welcome to I waste.
All major releases over the last year were faulty crap.
iphone intel chip Desaster, Pad Pro ... screen dead, Watch was obsolete on arrival, .Mac Keyboard horror, ... useless HomePod... no Bluetooth included, haha

Reminds me of Steve Besumi from Armageddon..."Common...we staying or going, staying or going?"

Honestly...at this point i really dont care one way or another...if its march, its march, gives me more time to save up, buy myself a cheeper ipad in the mean time as a temp then trade it in!

I see no reason Apple would rush out new iPad Pro models, the current ones are pretty beastly. March 2020 would be consistent with their typical release schedule. Fall 2020 wouldn’t surprise me at all, waiting for A14X.

Although intriguing, i won’t be upgrading my 11” ipad pro for this 3D laser feature. I think it will be more useful for me on an iphone or an ipad mini anyway. I wonder if apple is going to change the exterior of the ipad pros in any way. They will have to keep the straight edge for pencil charging. But i am sure Apple will do something to promote that the new ones are stronger & less prone to bending. I haven’t had any bending issues with my 11” iPP myself, but i bet Apple will market this one as stronger. Liquid metal perhaps?

Having been a photojournalist for 40 years I, too, was skeptical about using my Pro and feeling a bit weird about looking ridiculous using it. Until I saw the hundreds of stunning photos it produced from trips to Alaska and Iceland, let alone my cats at home.

As a 2018 iPad Pro owner, you are not really part of the main target market for the 2019 iPad Pro.

I like it better when Apple releases new iPad Pros right after the iPhone. At least the Spring is better than the Summer. Nothing like buying an expensive new iPad Pro only to have the new iPhone that comes out two months later either match or beat it in performance because it uses a newer generation processor.

That doesn’t happen, the iPad isn’t held back by the previous iphone’s hardware, only the naming scheme is

There are 2 things I think that would make my 12.9" iPad Pro perfect. An OLED/MicroLED screen and less weight. Don't see myself using a camera array for anything, ever. But I have been wrong many times before!

Apple is too cheap to pay Samsung for tablet screens, so - no OLED for you, but I’m sure the screens will be ‘Liquid Retina Ion Super Max’ and it will be ‘Amazing’

And they’ll put 3D cameras on all devices because Augmented Reality is the future...

US-based Apple also plans to adopt the ToF module for the first time in its tablet, the iPad Pro, early next year. The ToF function will be available for the iPhones beginning in the latter half of next year.
Again with this? i still trust more Bloomberg
Maybe that still makes sense. iPad Pro update in 2019 H2, then another iPad Pro update in 2020 Q2.

Or maybe not.

That's not what Apple is going to deliver. They are following in the Samsung footsteps. You can find details on how this technology works in Samsung Galaxy Note 10 reviews and discussions.
Yes, Apple saw the Note 10, and they quickly decided to copy it in time for the 11 release.

Sometimes I wonder if people have any idea how long the lag time it when it comes to production schedules.
