Yeah this season has been amazing for action. Norris' time will come. Was stressful seeing him slide all over near the end with all that rain. lol!

Very interested to see how next season will differ with the new cars and changes. FIA is looking into how to work with the sprint races next year in terms of making them more exciting and implement them better.
Probably, he's (HAM) inherited 2 race wins in which he didn't dominate but simply kept after it.

Kudos to him for that.*

*Ooops. Looks like I quoted the wrong person... ?

Those laps lead figures are amazing, but same as possession in football, you can have 80% plus possession but still lose the game of course.
Still, it doesn't happen without a level of performance from both car and driver that is ahead of anyone else.

I can't imagine there have been any instances of someone winning the drivers championship with such an enormous deficit in laps lead (such as there would be if this persisted and yet Lewis managed somehow to win the championship).

Anyone know how to get such data for the Senna/Prost years, for example? That would be very interesting.

I'm not saying that would be exactly comparable, since Max and Lewis are in different cars, but there will be a few years where two drivers were in tight battles throughout the season, and the winner could have had fewer laps led than second place. But such a large gap, i can't imagine that happening unless the champion at the end of the season was also the one who had such a large advantage in laps led.

This site lets you browse the leads per race and you get a bit more in depth detail on who led when in the race. Max dominated the Austrian home races for RB completely which is a big push in those figures, plus the usual lead in Monaco where the first car probably has the easiest drive all season if you can keep it all together.

That website tried to steal a forum off someone I know and one I participated in for many years during the early 2000’s. The forum was lively and full of F1 discussion and was part of that website but owned separately. He woke up one morning and they’d downloaded the content and blocked his access despite him legally owning it. Luckily he had a backup and set it up on a standalone site and most of the members followed him. It was a very sneaky thing to do and changed my views of motorsport.com to be honest even if they have some good content.

I didn’t know that, thanks for the history background. I was merely looking for some more info on the topic and the official F1 page is a tracking and privacy nightmare as well.

Are there better sites that you can recommend for the occasional visitor by chance? Thanks in advance!

I tend to just use Autosport and their bulletin board is great for discussion and news. I don’t follow F1 like I used to as life has taken over for me and I browse articles and try and catch highlights when I can. I used to on fan forums daily about 15-20 years ago.

Does Autosport require a paid membership?

I think some of their content does yes. I’ve never subscribed personally.
It looks like you can move about freely or pay...

Article isn't too enlightening but it does have a couple of 2022 car pics that are interesting...

Not sure if these are the actual final products...

They won’t be, but if you recall they made a mock up F1 car based on the rule changes next year. Not very pretty. But if it allows closer racing I can live with it.

Congratulations to Bottas for P1. Could have been more during the season were it not for Toto.

Great strategy by RBR. P2, P3. ;)

Good effort by Ferrari.

Big Congratulations to Carlos for his 1st career DOD. :)

Would love to be a fly on the wall in tonight’s Mercedes debrief with Hamilton. Total miss communication at the end. Should have let him stay out once they didn’t bring him in earlier.

Going down to the last race still.

Bottas did exceptionally well and legitimately held off Max (who seemed to not really be pushing hard). Mind you, if Lewis had started P2-P4 instead of P11, he'd have had Bottas quickly enough.

As to Lewis, honestly I cannot fault Mercedes strategy on this one. Perez was on fire with new Inters and there was no way Lewis would have held him off on race-distance Inters. I also am not convinced Lewis would have caught LeClerc if LeClerc had stayed on race-distance Inters, as well, even with his struggles. So at best, he would have finished P4 instead of P5 and IMO likely would have remained P5 if he had stayed on his original tires the entire race. People were also reporting rain on various parts of the track and if it had fallen more consistently or in more places as the final laps unfolded, Lewis and LeClerc likely would have been off-track and finished even worse.

So honestly, if I am to blame anyone, I blame Lewis. Mercedes wanted to pull him in earlier knowing the drop-off was going to happen and if Lewis had followed their advice, he would have come out in P5 but would have had his tire issues around the same time Perez and LeClerc did and being the better driver in the better car, might have been able to outperform them and move up.

One strategy mistake was clearly sending Vettel out on not only slicks, but Medium slicks. Softs could have in theory made some sense, but the Inters are fairly softer than the Softs so even that was almost certainly a mistake. But Mediums? o_O

And another embarrassing performance by the Race Stewards in giving Gasly a penalty for his impact with Alonso. IMO, Alonso was clearly the aggressor in going down the inside line and Gasly had to yield to Perez so they both would clear the corner. Again, IMO, Alonso got greedy and he paid the penalty with losing all those spots. Alonso's punting of Schumacher into the weeds was clearly "avoidable contact" so I do support the Stewards slapping him with a 5 second penalty for that maneuver.

It seems clear that the FIA no longer believes in the concept of a "Racing Incident" and all contact is clearly intentional malice by the drivers. I expect the only reason Sainz did not get a 5 second penalty for hitting Vettel is they were both clearly giving each other room and Sainz hit a damp(er) patch and lost control.

Hahaha the great Mercedes strategy 2000 computer strikes again. I think Mercedes have just lost themselves the championship. We will see though, but time and again Mercedes mess up their strategy.
