Dongle?

USB-C's been out for nearly half a decade. Why aren't you on a 100% USB-C ecosystem already? Come to think of it, the only USB legacy device I have is a USB-A & USB-C Combo drive.
My TV, monitors, keyboard, mouse, and everything else except for one pair of headphones that charge off USB-C. New monitors rarely have USB-C, and new TVs never do. I'm sure USB-C will be great some day, but right now it's trash.

The biggest issue is the lack of HDMI, and I don't even mind losing USB-A. Somehow, no video dongle ever works right. I always have to replug that dongle on my corp laptop 2 or 3 times after sleep, or maybe sleep the computer, or sometimes even reboot. (It's rebooting right now; wish they gave me a 2015 model instead.) And when you're on the go, probably the only thing you'll ever plug into your laptop is a TV at a friend's house or something, so it'd be nice not to need a dongle for that.

I'm not convinced that USB-C will be "great" someday. It's quite possible that something much better will come along before USB-C gains wide adoption.

USB-C is already a giant confusing mess.

And no, USB-C does not have wide adoption right now since most displays and accessories still come with USBA/HDMi.

Unless you're not looking I'm sure why you're apparently pretending that no USB-C to HDMI cable exists because many of them do. I have one for my 16" and it works perfectly and very well built. Got it off Amazon for under $20.

Well, there will be the later revision of USB-C that just supports all the protocols you commonly need, and that'll be the great new thing. Instead of this clusterf where you never know what you're getting in a USB-C accessory because technically USB-C is just the connector and nothing else. "Does it support Thunderbolt?"

So, undo the ports after years of backlash too? And the touchbar.
They undid force touch on iPhones. Guess it was considered useless.
But do you see news articles on WSJ about ports and touchbar? The community has now got used to the thunderbolt and dongles. I'm all up for ports but I'm skeptical about it. The Touchbar, personally I'm a fan of it and BTT makes it pretty useful for me.

The 3D Touch on iPhones are a different story since Apple never properly gave it the credit it needs.

Twas ever thus, even if you weren't aware of it. Designs don't come out of a vacuum.
Nope.

The position of "UX Designer" is a fairly recent role. Previously, designers were just "UI Designer" or "Product Designer". Now these people are expected to be user experience researchers and designers in one.

I would dearly love to see Apple release a new MBP with the ethernet jack, like the 2011 MBP, but I know that's not going to happen (yes, you can use a dongle, but then you've got a potentially heavy long cable hanging on a relatively fragile connector, when the actually RJ45 is built to withstand hanging cables). I don't need ethernet often, but when I do, a built-in jack is so much better than a dongle. I'll settle for a proper MagSafe connector for power, though - that was always a better connector for power.

You'll never be safe from not having a dongle unless you have a USB-A port.

Don't want dongles? Put USB-A and HDMI back.

I haven't used USB-A in several years. It's a legacy port and not needed by most people, and the number of people still needing it goes down every month. USB-C is the standard now used for USB sticks and for power. Bluetooth is used for external keyboards and mice.

It's reasonable to ditch it.

I agree that HDMI should be built in. Just one. Just for the scenario I said previously - for a brief presentation in school or at work. If you're going to also be plugged into power at the same time, you should have a combo dongle that includes both HDMI and Power (and USB-A... that's the dongle currently plugged into my Mac. The Power and HDMI are both used. The USB-A port is there but I've never touched it.)

at least we can draw comfort in the knowledge that apl employees have to eat their own dog food too.
I bet someone high up in the echelon of managers finally got fed up with it and said "Why the F#%* are our laptops so F#%*# hobbled?"

You are dreaming. Not going to happen. It would make the new models at least 1 mm thicker. No one would buy such bulky laptops nowadays.
We have MacBook Air for ultra lightweight laptop users. The MacBook Pro should be thick enough that it can't be damaged easily. Batteries are not so thin that the operating time is handicapped. I think there should be HDMI 2.1 port, several USB-C, audio/voice jack at minimum. Key to this is not how thick it is, but what is the weight. :)

The problem I have with this is the long term implications of delaying a 1-port-to-rule-them-all future.

HDMI 2.1 could be interesting though...

Maybe some of these ports are also somehow related to the rumored VR HMD development kit they may launch at WWDC...

This is an awful idea. Give me 6 Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports, but don't start adding crappy USB-A back in it again, that connector should have been finished off in 2016 when Apple released the original.

Please please please let this be true. It will finally be time to retire my mid-2012 MBP 15”.

Please please don't let this be true - unless it just means 6x Thunderbolt/USB 4 ports which would be much more powerful than a single function port - and I never want to see USB-A ever again on any laptop.

By the sounds of it Apple are returning to the design of the titanium PowerBooks from the early 2000’s which were squared off. I loved the look of those so not a bad thing.

The lack of ports is what’s kept me from buying a new MacBook Pro. So slimmer bezels and more ports would be a “go” for me

Definitely looks worse on the 2011 where they're all pushed to one side (the super drive slot taking up the other). The huge ethernet hole always looks odd too, though I think the retina machines look pretty balanced. Guess you needed them all back then though!
Haha! Yeah, I mean how do you balance the beauty with the functionality?
Maybe one of those flip open trays to hide all the holes would be... no, never mind.

Four usb-C holes look waaaaay better.

it's probably just a executive decision which direction to go.... and who you are building the machine for.
