I think I heard or read that Rodgers' contract makes it such that cutting him would not be a viable option for the team's bottom line. If he was told he'd start as a backup, it would only be in private. Rodgers could spill the beans in order to try to force a trade…

Some think Rodgers did not work in the prior off-season to stay in top shape. I can't imagine him doing serious workouts this off-season, whether in the dark or full daylight, if he's accepting the backup role. That would be a disaster for the Packers. But, if they want a high pick in the next draft, who knows?

I wonder what Rodgers would do if GBP told him that they plan to demote him to a backup role if he returns for another season with them.
Yep. What are the odds of a QB2 being the highest paid player on the team?😏
OK, can we stop this nonsense about the Packers keeping Rodgers on the bench? ZERO chance.
The voice of reason.🧐 Having the highest paid player riding the pine will cause a lot of resentment. Not only will Rodgers be pissy about it, the other players would be hopping mad too. How would you feel if a coworker who doesn't do anything gets paid 100x your salary?🤔

Of course they're not going to pay him to sit on the bench. If they're done with him, they'd trade him first, unless he decided to retire.

When Brett Favre was at the end of his days with GB, they went thru a similar phase of "what's he going to do", something the team grew tired of, and they ultimately traded Farve to the Jets.......maybe history will repeat itself and Rodgers will get traded to the Jets

....

indeed, the whole idea of even suggesting that they're ready to have Love be their starter (hmmmm, shades of SF and Garoppolo)......that would be a nudge to Rodgers to retire or ask for a trade

He has all the power in this current relationship. Cutting him would mean nearly a hundred million dollars in dead money and nearly 70 million cap charge. The final column is cap savings so a negative is a cap charge (kind of confusing I know).

The team can't cut him (financial suicide), or force a trade if he doesn't want it. They can either bench him, or play him, that's it.

Not only that, but if he really were to be benched, it would split the locker room. How could you tell the veterans who might only have a year or two that you're going to sit the better of your QB's because he a little baby. Would not go over well.

Yeah, the situation could get ugly real quick, and given how much Rodgers is a drama queen, we can bet things would go south fairly quickly.

I suspect though that he'll want to avoid such histrionics and just look for a divorce. GB wants to limit the teams to the AFC, but I think he can push fairly easily to throw that requirement out the windows, simply by threatening to come back

As I said before, GB should be happy just to get his contract off the books and not worry about any draft pick compensation. There are 2 nice landing spots in the AFC (Jets, Raiders) that would love to have him.

Carlson Wentz has been cut by the Washing Football team (I hate the name, so I'll just use that :) )

I can't say that I'm surprised, and given that he's made millions of dollars during his tenure as a NFL QB, I don't have any sort of pity for the man.

I think his best and only option is to sign as a backup but even that might be a bit of a stretch. I'm sure emotionally he's not ready to acknowledge that at best he's a backup and not starter. Who knows, some team may be desperate enough to sign him, thinking they can "fix" him.

The Commanders (Washington Football club sounds like a soccer team) were smart in cutting him. Can’t imagine another team taking a chance on him as a starter. At this point he has two choices: find a job as a backup or retire.

Yeah, maybe the Jets would take a flier on him. After all, they hired Nathaniel Hackett as OC, and he has a proven track record… This would keep the Jets on the same track they've been on for 2 or 3 decades.

(sarcasm alert) [added 3/1 for clarity]

The issue issue that Wentz had many coaches who had proven track records but none of them were able to get him to play at a level that he played since his rookie year

I’m going to sit back and take a break from watching the musical chairs game. It will all sort itself out and I’ll catch up when the next season comes around.
