My personal strategy: iCloud backup daily, do one before setting up new phone. Do an encrypted computer backup in the Finder and then select "archive" to make sure it doesn't get written over by the new phone, make sure you save the password for the encryption. Save it at least for a couple months just in case. I've never needed it, but it is reassuring to know you have it.

Then do a phone to phone transfer to the new phone, Apple calls it Quick Start. I did several of these in the last year and they are quick and include the eSIM info to quickly complete the setup.
