Hi all,

Is this the year where the iPhone mini sales takes off?!

So with Covid going… Spring here… Time for me to buy a smaller phone?

We are really hoping this coming year is going to be a good one for everyone!

We are hoping to go out doors a lot more this year - It will be much more important now to have a smaller phone - Taking photos, outdoorsy hiking stuff etc.

I must say, since upgrading from the iPhone 5 SE, to the new iPhone SE 2020, the old iPhone 8 chassis is simply too big for me for confident handling. I thought I’d get used to the shape of the SE2020 phone, but I really do find it hard work for one hand usE - Very precarious in the one hand, and just uncomfortable to use. During Covid, I have kinda got used to it pottering round indoors.

But if we’re going outdoors a lot more now, it would be much more of a pain to be using the SE2020 constantly, while standing on concrete, hiking trails, taking photos in precarious spots etc.

I’ve got the Ipad and MBA for the bigger screen when I need it.
My want from the next Mobile Phone is the other way - Small = Best

So my shopping list is:
Small form factor
Better camera than SE2020

My 2 pennies worth

I’m investigating the Mini now ?

Best wishes
Martin

If you want a 13 mini, you should buy one soon. There are many rumors that Apple will discontinue the iPhone mini in September with the iPhone 14 lineup. The sales seem to be disappointing so far, and I don’t believe that it will change in the next few months

Yes. People want big phones, not small ones. And people interested in small phones usually do not need a lot of power for a lot of money. Selling a small iPhone 13 for $699 will not appeal to these customers, and Apple will not make it for $399 or $499. So, I would bet Apple is going to discontinue the mini models and perhaps turn the SE series into its small form factor.

I think they’ll continue selling the 13 Mini for another year at a discount of $100. The price between the Mini and the Regular were so close that the Regular completely cannibalised the Mini sales. It’s a shame because the Mini line is my favourite.

People kept blaming the pandemic for the weak sales and that it would pick up but I don't think that will happen. I think the user base is a lot smaller than people realised and bigger screens are more popular.

If one of the main issues is gripping the phone, have you tried a Popsocket or similar? (Pop-out knob thing that sticks on the back of the case.) I have one on my 2020 SE and it makes a huge difference – I can type on the phone one-handed or easily hold it while reading/watching video by just 'dangling' the knob between two fingers. When retracted, the Popsocket only adds a few mm to thickness. It also works as a stand for propping the phone on a table. I went from a 2016 SE to the bigger 2020 model and was unhappy with the extra size/weight until I added the 'knob'. I still have my old SE and the 2020 + knob is much more ergonomic and the extra weight is negated by the ease of grip.

Hi Neon,

RE: Popsockets - oh I didn't know you could collapse them!

I saw one on a Samsung and thought 'omg - you what?!' - but if they collapse then fair enough ?

Do you have the popsocket offset to which handedness you are? Or is it dead centre?

That may be the answer for the SE2020 at least :)

Yes, they go quite flat, so the phone still fits in a jeans pocket, etc. You can also remove the knob part from the stick-on base. But if you don't want the popsocket on all the time, it's easiest just to have two cases, and swap the phone from one to the other. The popsocket will stick to smooth plastic cases but not to silicone.

Mine is centred horizontally but very slightly above centre vertically, as I find the phone balances better in my hand that way (below centre and the phone tends to flop forward). Typically, when using the phone one-handed, I hold the knob between first and second fingers, really just resting on the second finger, which allows me to pivot the phone and easily reach the far corners of the screen with my thumb.

I hope that is some help :)

To be honest, I expected to be in the Mini camp and was set on getting one, but after 6 months with my company issued iPhone 13 I have to say the regular size is perfect for me. Wouldn’t want a smaller phone in 2022.

I doubt it, people who like big phones seem hell bent on discouraging people from buying small ones. I'm not sure why, but just look at these forums and I think the things people are saying here they are probably also saying to their friends and family members that are considering new phones. I may buy a second 13 mini this year to replace my iPhone 11 that I use for work, which I hate due to its size and weight. The 13 mini is a great phone, just a little bit too heavy (compared to the 12 mini and original SE both of which I've owned) and I'm still not a fan of OLED screens due to color shift when viewing angle changes, but the 13 mini may just be the best phone I've owned all things considered. I may need to stock up on them if this is the last of the small phone, maybe buy a few and have the battery removed immediately after purchase. I will not buy another Apple phone if the only options are large phones.

I don’t know what the sales are but it’s a perfect size device for me. I think apple will continue to produce the mini for a while hopefully replacing the SE with the mini.

You don’t have to stock up on 13 Minis because the one you have will likely last you until it’s obsolete. There is no reason your Mini won’t last you another 10 years, by which point it’ll have been long since abandoned by Apple. If you can purchase just the battery you could probably pick up a few of those. I have the Apple MagSafe battery pack which has breathed new life into my 12 Mini by doubling the battery life.
