I have bought a 13 mini after having a 13 since september. I think that Apple will keep the 13 mini in the lineup this year and will drop the number after 2 or 3 more years like they did with the iPad mini (was there a number ever?). So we will hav just the iPhone mini (2025) I guess. Or the SE and the mini will merge.

Hi all,

Is this the year where the iPhone mini sales takes off?!

So with Covid going… Spring here… Time for me to buy a smaller phone?

We are really hoping this coming year is going to be a good one for everyone!

We are hoping to go out doors a lot more this year - It will be much more important now to have a smaller phone - Taking photos, outdoorsy hiking stuff etc.

I must say, since upgrading from the iPhone 5 SE, to the new iPhone SE 2020, the old iPhone 8 chassis is simply too big for me for confident handling. I thought I’d get used to the shape of the SE2020 phone, but I really do find it hard work for one hand usE - Very precarious in the one hand, and just uncomfortable to use. During Covid, I have kinda got used to it pottering round indoors.

But if we’re going outdoors a lot more now, it would be much more of a pain to be using the SE2020 constantly, while standing on concrete, hiking trails, taking photos in precarious spots etc.

I’ve got the Ipad and MBA for the bigger screen when I need it.
My want from the next Mobile Phone is the other way - Small = Best

So my shopping list is:
Small form factor
Better camera than SE2020

My 2 pennies worth

I’m investigating the Mini now ?

Best wishes

If I had the money, I would get the mini as well. After a period of large phones, I'm starting to appreciate anything that's smaller and holdable by one hand.

Market wise, people prefer larger screen though, and the numbers show.
More and more people have the iPhone as their main, if not only, do everything device. This means both productivity and entertainment are done on the iPhone. As such, a larger screen is preferred. The pandemic actually made more demands for larger screen as people using it for meetings, classes, etc.

We can see how there are less and less Android phones with less than 6.5" screen size.

I don't think the SE can be considered "small" phone. It has a smaller screen, yes, but its size is larger than the iPhone mini. The SE feels "small" simply because Apple upsized the regular iPhone.

Agree. I don't think Apple would just discontinue the mini entirely. Just like the 12 mini, Apple will keep the 13 mini at a reduced price. It's just that there will be no 14 mini.

So later this September might be a good time to get the 13 mini for less. :)

Looks like the new iPhone SE isn’t selling that well either. ?

For the SE, imo it's a bit too early to tell as it has not been launched in some markets yet.
Also, unlike the flagship iPhones where the buying patterns tend to cluster during launch month, the buying pattern of the SE imo would be more spread out throughout its life.

I've seen a few mini's around in Japan after the 13 came out, I didn't see many last year. It's usually salarymen using the device, so I wonder if the Mini is being used as company phone option... or if it is actually gaining traction here.

I need to upgrade my 12 Mini soon :)

I got an amazing deal from Sprint to upgrade my 8 to a 12 last year. I ended up going with a regular sized 12 & regretted it almost instantly. It was only slightly bigger than the 8, but it seems like maybe the 8 was about the limit of what I find comfortable to use.

Just got an offer to upgrade my Original SE on the other line & decided to go with the 13 mini. I instantly love this phone. It's the perfect size for me & I like it even better than the SE (easier to type on, etc). Sadly I don't think these will take off, but I will for sure, buy another mini to replace my full-sized 12 once the contract runs out & will use that until Apple comes out with an updated mini or the phone stops working, for sure.

Apple app: Stock.
Look up Apple and
NEWS Title “Apple's main investor concern this quarter: demand”

Demand is the key point this past quarter that’ll make a huge change for Apple’s marketing and cost structure in building products.

I’ll be VERY interested if Apple shows how bad the SE 3 is if production cuts just 6wks from launch are to be completely true. Did Apple cuts the production for the 13 mini and at what time frame from it’s launch did that occur?

Most people that needed to upgrade their phones did so with the iPhone SE 2, the 12 or 13 series - the latter beating all previous sales records including the 6/6s cycle.

Inflation is really hitting consumers as well as grocery costs go up, gas still way too high, and with summer coming along (lockdowns pretty much over with limited if any restrictions to) travelling will be the next big spending for most.

Also considering savings or investments has been seeing a drop lately (investments, while savings will increase due to sell offs).

We’ll see what Thursday brings in number to meet/beat/lose against, but more importantly is future outlook on next quarter(s) THAT will be the key to what Apple will do/needs to do.

So unless a HUGE purchase of all iPhone 12/13 mini’s occurs until no more stock (I wish, but this is reality), I don’t see the iPhone 13 mini sales will lead to a new production year.

let’s remember: Apple gave up on the Mini before the 2nd day after announcement.
1. How many print ads do you see the iPhone mini (12/13) actually mentioned?
2. How many Apple official social media posts that either a) show the 12/13 mini (solo or with another iPhone), and b) actually by name mention the iPhone mini?
3. How often on international Apple Store sites do you see the 12/13 mini mentioned from the main iPhone page or the main store page? (Or even shown without first having to select the regular iPhone)???

That’s been it’s failure ever since. Now in hindsight the iPhone SE 3 was heavily marketed and featured in the last event, 3x as longer screen time than the iPhone 12 mini was (13 mini got NO love at all), and the SE 3 is failing BIG, again 6wks production cut!

If one of the main issues is gripping the phone, have you tried a Popsocket or similar? (Pop-out knob thing that sticks on the back of the case.) I have one on my 2020 SE and it makes a huge difference – I can type on the phone one-handed or easily hold it while reading/watching video by just 'dangling' the knob between two fingers. When retracted, the Popsocket only adds a few mm to thickness. It also works as a stand for propping the phone on a table. I went from a 2016 SE to the bigger 2020 model and was unhappy with the extra size/weight until I added the 'knob'. I still have my old SE and the 2020 + knob is much more ergonomic and the extra weight is negated by the ease of grip.

your very first point ‘Gripping the phone’ has always been an issue for my son and I.
The iPhone 6/6s/7/8 were all VERY slippery if used naked. My son has bigger hands than I and had the 6s while sitting down, in hand slipped right from his hand while barely paying attention. he said he tried squeezing to get a grip which forced the phone to slide out quicker.

Grip naked iPhone … having dry hands is always going to be slippery, sweaty or clammy palms nothing slips out. ;)

I can type just as easily one-handed on the original iPhone 5/5S/SE OG or the 12/13 mini. here is anecdotal reference - I have small hands so it’s easier. I got to finally palm the 13 Pro - which looks the sweet kit but man a HUGE difference in width.

I just so happen to fit the demographic the iPhone 12/13 mini is targeted towards. Powerful cpu, storage, RAM as regular iphone with higher pixel density, small overall dimensions updated unlock (FaceID), screen (OLED) that is larger than the SE’s. Plus a modern design - not some tired old busted thing and that alone (design of the SE 3) I think affected sales.

Yes, they go quite flat, so the phone still fits in a jeans pocket, etc. You can also remove the knob part from the stick-on base. But if you don't want the popsocket on all the time, it's easiest just to have two cases, and swap the phone from one to the other. The popsocket will stick to smooth plastic cases but not to silicone.

Mine is centred horizontally but very slightly above centre vertically, as I find the phone balances better in my hand that way (below centre and the phone tends to flop forward). Typically, when using the phone one-handed, I hold the knob between first and second fingers, really just resting on the second finger, which allows me to pivot the phone and easily reach the far corners of the screen with my thumb.

I hope that is some help :)
You’ll have a bulge. Not completely flat nor as flat as some collapsible ring add-ons btw.

I loved 12 mini 256 so much, I bought 13 mini 512. This’ll be my phone for a while.
Eye-and-I same ting!
Just waiting 2 more days for case and screen protector to arrive. Skin is here wondering if I should go naked+skin+screen protector until my first AC+ claim?

Wish they made 13 pro mini

No you guys don’t and I’ll mention why.

1. 3 Camera’s of the Pro would take up considerably expensive internal real-estate that would affect:
FaceID (size and placement would affect the FaceID modules).
2. Of all the biggest complaints of the iPhone 12 mini being small battery and fixed with an ever so slightly larger capacity battery + much more efficient A15 in the 13 mini … that battery would drop in capacity and size significantly in the 13 mini Pro you propose/wish for it would just not even run up to 4hrs on full charge.
3. Now add ProRes recording:
The 13 mini has 512GB of storage max! 1 min of ProRes at 60 fps is 6GB … do the math with less battery than the 12 mini ;)
4. You’ll be complaining about battery life as you use the touch screen so often that the 120hz screen would be so often at that level again battery drain!
5. Weight - those huge camera’s would increase the weight significantly what would be the point to have a small device that weighs like the Pro models? And you’d want stainless steel for the chassis?! Nope.

Of the last 20yrs of smartphones or longer that I’ve witness only 1 company has EVER come close or surpassed what Apple did with the 12/13 mini and that friends was …

Sony!

Xperia Compact lineup lasted 4-5yrs in total, 1 year even going as so stupidly to cancel water/dust resistance that that decision alone reduced sales so significantly they reversed that just the very next year. It’s been about 4yrs since the Compact line was made by Sony. Ever year the Compact had just about the same specs as the top of the line Xperia except for: battery capacity and display resolution/tech/refresh rate. Camera was the same as the top end for about 3yrs and that stopped.

Ever notice during the 12 mini’s announcement Apple chose to use the 007 music even though they re-enacted the 3GS scene of Mission Impossible? The 007 theme was a tongue-in-cheek poke towards Sony as Sony has all the rights to the 007 movies ;)

you like the idea of a Pro mini iphone but you really do NOT want one for all the reasons you dislike the current iPhone mini in the first place.

Hi all,

Well, 5 weeks of owning one:

1. Definitely worth it - The true spiritual successor to the iPhone 5SE
- The shape, the form factor
- Flipping amazing camera, and gorgeous to look at screen
- The jaw dropping - 'wow you fit all this into such a tiny body?!'
- Apparently, amazing phones do not have to be big.

2. The weighting is perfect
- it 'sits' securely in the hand
- Rather than being top heavy and constantly wanting to 'fall out' over the top of your hand.

3. The size is perfect for me
- With the apple silicon case at least!
- I found when it was naked - it was actually too small and a pain to try and pick up off a table top, as it was so slim!
- Just every day use - really easy to hold and use without thinking about it, or constantly complain that it is too big and cumbersome.

Seriously, before the phone is discontinued, just try one in the shop - amazing to hold, amazing to play with. Back to a proper old school truly 'mobile' phone!

My 2 pennies worth

Martin :)

Looks like the new iPhone SE isn’t selling that well either. ?

According to the terrible chart in the latest US sales story, the SE is actually selling worse than both the Mini 12 & Mini 13 at around 2%... Of course MR forgot to mention this:

The SE 2022 is that tiny 'brown' line, 4th from the left. Which is smaller than either the Mini 13 (yellow, right-most) or 12 (green, left of that huge blue iPhone 13 block).

The 2022 se didn’t come out until late in the quarter (March iirc) so the fact that it sold almost as well as the 13 mini while only being available for less than 1/3 of the time is probably why they didn’t mention it. I expect next quarters numbers to look very different.

I like both the SE and the mini… probably the mini a little better. I have both and at this point will just keep whichever one they are gonna keep going with.

Did anyone else catch Tim‘s meeting yesterday? He said the SE if for customers who want an affordable, smaller phone. No mention of the mini…

LOL. That might mean Apple will keep that old design forever to come.... :D

Hey how do you like FaceID compared to TouchID? How well does FaceID work with masks?

Also do you find it’s easy to swipe down from the top right on the Mini for control centre?
