Apple's upcoming iMac Pro with a mini-LED display could launch in June, analyst Ross Young said today. Apple has been working on a larger-screened version of the iMac for months now, and if the June timeline is accurate, it could see a debut at the Worldwide Developers Conference.

Rumors originally suggested that the new iMac could launch in the spring, but Young in late January said that he was expecting a "summer" launch. At the time, Young claimed that panel shipments were expected to begin in June and that a launch could follow in August or September, but he appears to have moved his timeline up.

The 27-inch iMac will be sold alongside the 24-inch iMac as a higher-end version, and to bring it in line with the MacBook Pro, it could be called the iMac Pro. It will feature a mini-LED backlight, and Young today said that he expects it will have "around 1000 zones" and "over 4000 miniLEDs."

Along with a mini-LED display, the iMac is expected to feature a redesigned look and the same M1 Pro and M1 Max chips introduced in the 2021 MacBook Pro models.

Hopefully Apple revives either Target Display Mode or something similar so that this presumably high-quality monitor can continue to be used as a monitor when the computing guts seem "long in tooth" in only a few generations of Apple silicon.

I think about new A-series chips being shock & awe incredible at launch and then getting "long in tooth" only 2 or 3 years later. Why are M-series chips going to be different? If not, this monitor may have 10+ years in it while the M1 or M2 chip in its guts might have up to about half that life.

IMO, this needs some way to upgrade the tech guts or repurpose the monitor. I'm a long-term fan of iMac- even make my living mostly using one- but I would want to see that kind of utility in the next one. Else Mini or Pro Jr is MY next Mac.

2012-2022: 5K display you mostly couldn’t get anywhere else (at a decent price) if you wanted to build a comparable PC

2022-20xx : 5K miniLED display you mostly can’t get anywhere else at a reasonable price

27” iMac = a unique value proposition for 10 years and counting

Meanwhile some PC users are still debating 1080p vs 1440p vs 4K.

I’ve got a decision to make if it’s an Apple Silicon device. (Probably is.) I enjoy playing pc games in BootCamp. My 2020 27 inch iMac is maxed out and I can access things like MSFS 2020 and Red Dead Redemption II. I’ll probably sit tight for awhile.

when people cares more about design than the productivity
This is an electronic, not an piece of art that never becomes obsolete
When people care about one feature and forget about the product value.
The redesign is not about the look (funny as the new iMac look is a selling factor) current 2020 iMac enclosure is half empty, they haven't updated the components other than the new CPU since 2020!

If anyone needs Windows, ride your Intel Macs for as long as you can. And even after the macOS side is no longer upgradable, the Windows side will probably still be upgradable.

Some of us are spinning Windows ARM eventually being THE solution for a MX "bootcamp" but that means both Microsoft needs to change policy and Apple needs to embrace a Silicon bootcamp. However, even if both would do that, it also ignores the reality that Windows ARM is not fully-functional Windows: some stuff works and some doesn't. If you need dependable, fully-functional Windows for anything Windows, you need Window X86.

As a long-term iMac owner, my evolving strategy is to cover the NEED for (full) Windows with a dedicated Windows Mac-mini like box, the WANT for Mac Silicon to potentially be covered in a rumored M1 PRO or MAX Mac Mini and some other brand's monitor being the screen for BOTH of those: a dedicated hardware bootcamp option. As all things look right now: dedicated machines offer the only way to fully have one's cake and eat it too once existing Intel Macs conk.

The elephant in the room is, at what price? Can entry level iMac Pro with M1 Pro and 27-inch mini LED hit $4,999 price point?

Earlier rumor pegged Apple releasing a standalone 27-inch mini-LED display at about half the price of Pro Display XDR, or $2,499. So that suggests Apple charging a $1,000 premium over 1st generation iMac Pro, or $5,999.

not with those chips. do they have desktop silicon to go with their more-powerful desktops?

thus far the M1 Pro can be had for 2199 (10-core) and that is the current pinnacle of CPU power Apple has.

you might want to check the Apple XDR display, last time I checked it can be used as a monitor ...
Are you going to give me the $$$ for it? That is hardly a reasonable price for a consumer monitor. The iMac is a consumer computer. Making a 27" monitor doesn't make it a PRO computer. There are a lot of people who just want a reasonably priced iMac with a larger monitor. 3" makes a difference — any man will confirm this. ;)

Wouldn’t there also be a more consumer level 27” iMac like there used to be. One without mini LED but with the more powerful chipset starting at around 2.000 USD
