By the time Apple is finished, there will be an emoji for everything, and we will be back to using hieroglyphics.:

A quick wikipedia check says there are 1424 emoji code points and 1072 hieroglyph code points.

I'm glad I looked though because I didn't realize there was a hieroglyph unicode page:
https://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/U13000.pdf

Now I need to find a font that supports the OG emoji!

It's a shame they can't separate emoji packs from iOS that way older devices can still get the latest emoji updates instead of a little square. o_O
Third-party apps have no trouble with this, they can update their emojis anytime they want but it may not be available to the keyboard but thru another menu.

In light of the recent court case where 👍was interpreted as agreement to a contract when the recipient claims to have meant "I've received your offer" we need a "message received" emoji. Like on the radio when they reply 'Roger' to mean I heard and understand you, and only that. Control 6 in ASCII was ACK, What would an ACK emoji look like?

The emoji stuff is part of a new unicode release, so it's not just graphics but also code. Third parties which display newer emoji do so by shipping their own unicode libraries and text renderers.

But also, Apple is fine if a few little squares convince people to upgrade their OS/phone.
