I'm not getting another iPad until they have micro-LED and if they never come out with it then I'm done with iPads.
Same goes for the phones.
I'm done with the current technology and OLED. If it means I'll go back to a flip-phone so be it.
There's no point for those of us who get headaches and blurry vision after looking at these things for just a few minutes anyway.

I use 12.9" M2 iPad Pro. The cameras should be better on the next iPad Pro.

However, the current camera is fast; it shoots quickly. It is good for taking pictures of documents, drawings, etc. A better close-up camera would be great on the next iPad Pro.

If there is wireless charging for iPad I guess Apple would make available a large thin charging pad for it.

For me, my M1 iPad Pro with 16GB RAM is plenty and will last me for many more years to come. The OS is so simple compared to macOS that I don't see this being an issue for a long time. I'm so sure of this that I paid to have my broken display fixed at a shop instead of waiting to buy a new one. And those prices have to be a joke. For years everyone has been saying Apple is going to jack up the prices on this, that and the other and it never really comes to fruition. Not even close to what these experts predict. I'm sure it will come up some in price but there is absolutely nothing that justifies a $700 increase in price (88% increase for the 11" and 64% increase for the 13!) if it's just a spec bump with a new display. The difference between Mini LED and OLED is not that vast. It's not like going from standard LCD LED to OLED. I also think it's likely we could see the M3 Pro chip in the next gen iPad Pro. It just makes sense when you look at the A17 Pro chip in the iPhone Pro. Although you know how Apple likes to be confusing with naming.

If this is as stated in this article, I am going to move down to the iPad Air line for future iPad upgrades. A standard iPad Pro 11" 256GB starting at $1500 is insane.

I have two theories about this:
  1. Apple is deliberately putting out misinformation about the price in order to get people to continue to buy the current model well into next year as it will be getting long in the tooth by that point. Scaring people into thinking there will be an 88% price increase will cause more people to go ahead and buy the current model.
  2. Apple is massively overhauling the iPad Pro line, perhaps even making the iPad Studio, and this rumor is for the wrong product. For instance, there has been the long rumored foldable that acts as an iPad when flat and as a Mac when folded. If this is that, it would justify the price absolutely.
I would love to have a combo iPad/Mac! And I would pay a pretty penny to get a decently spec'd model. I will be in the market for a Mac upgrade around then, although I am hesitant about how good the keyboard experience could be. Perhaps having it fold up, the top camera could look down at your fingers and use AI to improve speed and accuracy? But being tactile, idk. Most of the time when I'm typing a lot I would use it docked to a display with external mouse and keyboard for work.

On #1 I'm probably going to get an M2 before the refresh if only so I can keep using my existing Magic Keyboard. My 2020 is fine but it's not hard to see that it's going to be dropped by iOS before it truly ends up slow - it's already being feature-gated due to the lacking ML cores in the A12 generation (M2 is more than 3x more capable in that respect, on top of being 2x better than A12Z in most respects).

That said I know I'm fairly alone on those things so I can see perhaps trying to drive some continued sales, but even then I suspect it wouldn't help much.

Booo for OLED especially since iPad Pro is being used for many professionals.

OLED on an iPad does feel like a bigger issue than an iPhone, both for burn-in and accuracy reasons.

Apple announced the current, M2-based iPad Pro models one year ago today, so what can customers expect from the highly anticipated next-generation model?

M3-iPad-Feature-3.jpg

The 2022 iPad Pro was a minor update that added the M2 chip, Apple Pencil hover, and specification upgrades like Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity. The iPad Pro as a whole has generally only seen relatively small updates in recent years, but rumors indicate that the next-generation ‌iPad Pro‌ will be the first major update to the product since 2018, introducing "fundamental changes."

The next-generation iPad Pro models are currently expected enter mass production in early 2024, with launch following in the spring or summer.

Refreshed Design

The iPad Pro has retained the same design through four successive generations since 2018. Major changes to the device next year are likely to include design changes, but whether they will consist of minor tweaks or an outright overhaul is yet to be seen. Earlier rumors suggested that a glass back could come to a future iPad Pro model, which would be a major design change for the product, but it is not clear if this is expected to arrive next year.

Last year, the 10th-generation iPad became the first-ever iPad model to feature a landscape front-facing camera orientation, a much more natural placement for video calls when using a Magic Keyboard. Rumors dating back to 2021 have suggested that the relocated front-facing camera is also headed to the iPad Pro. Such a change would likely also require different placement of the Apple Pencil, since the wireless charging components for the accessory are currently located where the camera would move to.

M3 Chip

The next-generation iPad Pro is expected to feature Apple's upcoming M3 chip to deliver improved performance and efficiency.

m3-feature-black.jpg

The M3 chip is highly likely to be based on the A17 Pro chip, which is manufactured using TSMC's 3nm node. The A17 Pro delivers 22% better performance over the A15 Bionic, the chip that M2 is based on. As such, it seems almost certain that the M3 chip will be able to deliver similar improvements.

A tentpole feature of the A17 Pro is a completely redesigned GPU with hardware-accelerated ray-tracing, leading to dramatically improved gaming experiences. The M3 chip is likely to sport the same technology, significantly enhancing the iPad Pro's graphics capabilities.

4TB Storage Option

Apple will offer next year's OLED iPad Pro models with a 4TB storage option, a rumor coming out of Asia claimed last month. Since 2021, the iPad Pro has been available with 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, or 2TB of storage.

If Apple increases the maximum storage of its forthcoming OLED iPad Pro models to 4TB, it would likely also increase the base storage to 256GB to maintain five capacity categories, making all seventh-generation models capable of recording ProRes in 4K at 30fps.

It is also worth noting that iPad Pro RAM is variable based on storage capacity, so iPad Pro models with 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB of storage come with 8GB of RAM, while iPad Pro models with 1TB or 2TB of storage feature 16GB of RAM. Whether that means a 4TB iPad Pro would feature 24GB or 32GB of RAM is unknown, but not improbable.

OLED Display Technology

OLED display technology is perhaps the most anticipated upgrade coming to the next-generation iPad Pro models. The current 11-inch model features an LCD display, while the 12.9-inch model has a mini-LED display.

iPad-Pro-OLED-Feature-2.jpg

Apple already uses OLED displays on the Apple Watch and iPhone, but has yet to bring the technology to larger devices. OLED displays use less power, sport greater color accuracy, and provide much better and more consistent contrast than LCD displays. As a significant upgrade, the change will likely be very prominent in the Apple's marketing materials for the next-generation iPad Pro.

Bigger Screens

The new iPad Pro models are also rumored to get display size increases from 11- to 11.1-inches and 12.9- to 13-inches, facilitated by slimmer borders around the screen.

ipad-pro-m1-feature.jpg

This would allow the footprint of the devices to remain the same while increasing display size. The slight increases are unlikely to add any meaningful functionality to the device, but it would provide a more modern "all-screen" appearance.

Higher Prices

The more advanced OLED display technology in the next-generation models is expected to drive up the iPad Pro's price, with current estimates starting at $1,500 and $1,800 for the 11-inch and 13-inch models, respectively. Pricing on the current 11-inch iPad Pro starts at $799, while the 12.9-inch iPad Pro starts at $1,099. Models with cellular connectivity are available for an additional $200 over the base price for each storage tier.

Improved Cameras

The iPad Pro has had the same 12-megapixel main rear camera with a ƒ/1.8 aperture since 2017. The 12-megapixel ultra wide camera with an ƒ/2.4 aperture and brighter True Tone flash have also remained the same since its introduction on the 2021 iPad Pro. Camera upgrades are rumored for other future iPad models with related hardware such as the seventh-generation iPad mini, so it follows that similar improvements are on the way for the iPad Pro.

Since 2021, the iPad Pro has also featured a 12-megapixel front-facing camera with an ƒ/2.4 aperture. With 2022's iPhone 14 models, Apple introduced an upgraded 12-megapixel front-facing camera with an ƒ/1.9 aperture and autofocus. It seems plausible that this hardware could be ready to trickle down to the iPad Pro in its next incarnation.

The current iPad Pros support Smart HDR 4, so an upgrade to Smart HDR 5 is likely. The Photonic Engine and other iPhone... Click here to read rest of article

I agree at this point. Since the iPad Air and Pro use the same processor found in MacBook Airs they should allow macOS when connected to keyboard/mouse, or the Magic Keyboard. It could default to non-touch interface at that point. Then as soon as it’s unconnected back to iPadOS. It would be a significantly more usable device for a lot of people. Sure, it may cannibalize some Mac sales, but better Apple cannibalize their own products than not sell a product.

Prices starting at $1,500

lmao no

Anyway…MR said 15 pro max would be more expensive but it actually got a price cut here so let’s wait and see.

And lol people mad at OLED. It’s the best screen tech out now of course Apple are going to use it. MicroLED is not ready yet.

I wish they'd add the split keyboard like the mini has. Doesn't make sense, other than to help them sell keyboards. It makes more sense to have the split keyboard on the larger iPad than the mini.

Add swipe typing capability to every on-screen keyboard layout too while they're at it (with a toggle to turn it on/off for those who don't want it).

Unless the next iPad can run Mac OS in place of Stage Manager when connected to a display I cannot see any reason anyone would put up with that price increase. If it is still crippled by iPadOS to the extent that it is now there is simply no point to that price. I say that as a very happy owner of an M1 iPad Pro 13", there is no way I would pay that price even though I love my iPad Pro. A smaller screen to save money would also make the device pointless to me since I also have an iPad mini. I consider my iPad Pro to kind of be a luxury to own, but I would not miss it much if I did not have it since I only use it as a simplified Mac for web browsing, some light photo editing, and content consumption. At that price I would only upgrade my Mac and skip the iPad Pro instead of upgrading both and just remove the iPad from my workflow.

Why would the base price increase from $799 to $1500? That is the stupidest thing I've heard. Are the writers of this article not realizing how absurd that is? If it is even close to being true, then we need sources or articles or insights indicating anything of the sort.

That is the very same reason why no iMac 32" 6K has been released.

Good luck selling that iMac beyond

- M3: $1,999 equivalent to a Core i5
- M3 Pro: $2,799 equivalent to a Core i7
- M3 Max: $3,199 equivalent to a Core i9
- M3 Ultra: $7,399 equivalent to a Xeon

The OS is so simple compared to macOS that I don't see this being an issue for a long time.

Many people in these forums seem to overlook the importance of what you've hit on.

There are hundreds of millions of people out there, who are potential buyers of this product, for whom the ins and outs of MacOS and a laptop are exactly not what they want or need.

While I think the rumor mill is full of rubbish, let's say Apple does come out with a new iPad line up soon. There will be a market for these things around the world.

I can think of many people off the top of my head, for whom and iPad may be a useful device, who will never touch a laptop or a desktop Mac.

Since November there are more than 8 billion people in the world.

Over than 5 billion of them are iPhone & Android users.

Windows users are about 1.6 billion. Mac users are around 100 million.

5 of 8 people in the world have a smartphone and likely never owned an laptop or much less a desktop.

Hardware progress is logical and likely happens. Price increase seems unrealistic unless being an iPad studio type of device, as mentioned earlier, with iPhone 15 Pro Max camera system, 13 and 15 inch displays. Considering that the Pro Max start at 1199, the rumored starting prices for an iPad “studio” would be realistic.

It would be the coolest and most flexible hardware on the planet for portable computing which must be the reason envious Mac user cry about the lack of MacOS. To some degree you are correct, MacOS runs on clamshell computers invented many decades ago. Fits a graphic user interface that is equally old, if not older;).

My iPad Pro 12.9 latest version 8 GB Ram have a battery life of 3 hours with maximum brightness (no auto), no keyboard lighting, and stage manager at work. It gets very hot after a while and the screen sporadically dims down to 50% maximum brightness.
As a bonus, when I connect iPad with stage manager on the Studio Display and work with Apple Pencil, I lose my progress sometimes when editing PDFs in Files. I do not feel as if I am getting an upgraded experience.

Definitely expecting to see the minor increase in screen size. Not so sure about the glass back. Also don't think the price will increase by a huge margin.

Give me a landscape camera, OLED and a desktop class browser and I am in.

And by ‘in’ I mean only if it’s not £1800+.

I absolutely love my IPP (2020) and nearly took the plunge on an M2 IPP (for the extended screen support) but the rumours of this model, with these features, have been too strong. Even as someone who loves their iPad and defends it a lot, I just can’t see it being worthwhile at that price point. Even I’d consider sticking with the iPad I have and getting a limited functionality M2 MBA at £1800.

Love my 2018 iPad Pro 11", and can't see me upgrading any time soon, but here is my wish list:
  • Longer lasting battery. If this can be accomplished with new screen technology, or more efficient processor, then please go right ahead.
  • Landscape camera for the Pro line.
  • Smaller bezels.
  • Keep the current frame and design, apart from changes necessary for new connectors, moving the front camera etc.
I think that is pretty much it. I don't have huge issues with iPadOS, as it lets me do what I need to do efficiently as it is. Pretty much solely use it attached to the Magic Keyboard (looking forward to that redesign though), but detach it a few times a week. Can't really do any professional work (my professional work that is) on it, but have a Macbook Pro issued from work for that. But for my own personal use, the iPad hits the sweet spot.

It is the modularity I am in love with. I know if I upgraded, it could be even more modular (as my 2018 version don't support stage manager with external screen), but I will hold off one or two more generations before an upgrade I think.

We have the same iPad and I'm scheduling my replacement by 2027 as I expect that year model will be compliant with EU law on replacement batteries.

Hope they don't put a glass back on it. They will just make it heavier. Apple need to steer away from all this weight increase (iPhone 15 pro was a step in the right direction with the titanium).

So a cellular iPad Pro will be about $2000.

looks like my M2 12.9 will be seeing multiple years of use.

I agree. We are using powerful hardware with an elementary OS.
still it is getting slowly better - there are more and more situations, where I can just use an iPad and don't need my laptop anymore. Really depends on the use case. With e.g teams and onedrive the experience is fine - even better than on MacOS.

I'll switch from my MacBook Pro to a MacStudio and will try to use the new iPadPro as a Laptop Replacement.
If this becomes too restricted I'll get a 15 inch MacBook Air.

The current form factor, with bezel and thickness I think is peak design. Camera placement, or the camera lenses themselves could change, but can’t see the bezel changing to be able to hold it without causing unintended action on the screen. If they can get the form factor thinner, great, but there isn’t much more I would think they could do while the USB-C port is necessary.

At some point, if not now already, it’s just a screen that won’t be able to be dramatically redesigned, and that‘s fine.
