Stefon Diggs is set to sign with the Commanders - as per
ESPN
this complicates Aiyuk situation, where he's been saying he's heading to Washington, but of course the 49ers have not released him, nor has he petitioned the NFL to reinstate him. He had a series of increasingly unhinged tweets that I think scared the commanders away.
There is little doubt this started with his discontent over his last contract situation. Didn't like SF's offer; and more weirdness that prevented other avenues like trades during that time from happening. With no other takers, he had to settle for what SF offered him, played a few ineffective games before blowing out his knee, and then the off-field games began in earnest.
He then blew off the team's rehab program, which was what originally lead them take action under the contract terms.
Putting aside the immaturity and other weirdness, that injury would still be a lingering question mark under the best of circumstances, for any player.
Despite all that baggage, I could see a GM taking a chance if he was an elite receiver. But
he's was good, not elite.
Washington's GM was part of SF's player personnel braintrust when Aiyuk was drafted, so he's not unfamiliar with his skills as a player, and probably the other stuff, too. But, nope, he's trying to build a winning culture, and that kind of selfishness and immaturity isn't something one adds to a team with such goals.
Even SF, which has a questionable receiver corps at full strength, has lost its former 1st round receiver for the season, and brought back a hopefully re-treaded Deebo Samuel, could use a good receiver right about now. But pigs remain firmly grounded farm animals.
Again, own worst enemy.
