Is it just me, or does the 5.5-inch front display make this a tough sell? Samsung’s latest Fold 7 has a front screen that’s nearly the size of a standard Pro Max, around 6.5 inches, which makes it feel like a fully usable phone even when it’s closed. For context, the regular iPhone is 6.1 inches, so you’d think that would be the baseline for usability.

I really wanted to be excited about the iPhone Foldable, but with such a small front display, it feels like you'd be forced to unfold it every time you want to do anything. That kind of defeats the convenience, right?
Oh, don't you worry! There will be tens of folks from the Mini Clan lining up for this one (and by that I mean ten total). 🙄

how wonderful it will be with the liquid sh*t UI, half cooked features and unfinished business everywhere, tons of nonsense restrictions imposed on users .. i think i'll pass, for all apple products until they fix their own mess. their whole software stack has become a really fat, like.. sweating oil.. big joke.

the M-series CPUs and architecture is very nice, the unified memory, the power efficiency, all that is great. but the software side of things has become unbearable. ridiculous even.

You can't directly compare the diagonals like that, because the aspect ratio is substantially different. Despite the smaller diagonal, the screen isn't actually that small. See here for how it looks like: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/rumoured-iphone-fold-size-concept-drawing-and-renders.2456447/

I've owned ten foldables to date, one of them being the Z Flip 4, which I was going to use as my backup to the Z Fold 4. I couldn't stand it to be honest. I returned it within a week. I didn't like having to unfold it to basically do anything quickly and accurately. To each their own though. A few friends of mine have Flips, and they love them.
Samsung really needs to make the external screen more functional. Even the new 7 is hamstrung in that way. That would go a long way towards making it a more user-friendly device.

It’s funny how expectations change. The Macintosh in 1984 cost $2500 which is $7500 in 2025 dollars. But a $2k device today and the sky is falling.
And what's a 128K Macintosh worth these days? Pretty much what this phone will be worth in 10 years (or less). But you could upgrade one of those $2,500 Macs to extend their product lifespan. the iPhone has always been marketed as a disposable commodity. And $2,000 is a lot to spend on a disposable commodity. Then there's this: before Apple officially announced the VisionPro, is was rumored to cost as much as $2,999. But it wound up being $3499. Speculation on this folding gizmo's upcoming price could wind up being just as far off the mark.

I agree! If I hadn't had to flip it over for everything, I think it would've been a much better experience.

Remember the good old days when Apple led and everyone else followed?

Now Apple is pretty much looking like a Johnny Come Lately to Samsung's Innovations. And while I don't like that, I'm way to invested in Apple hardware to switch platforms. Don't need a flip phone. Had one in 1996. Junk.

i personally wouldn’t mind if it were two separate screens and there was a very small gap between them. we’re getting to the point of edge to edge screens anyway. having used multiple monitors, you stop really noticing and if i am critically watching a video or something i would probably do it on a large monitor or tv anyway. constantly folding a creased surface multiple times a day for years is not a great setup for longevity, particularly in a portable device which takes some abuse by nature. i wouldn’t like having to think about that every time i used the phone i paid big money for.

I'd only consider this if it supports the Apple pencil, which it probably won't (there are zero rumors about that, and it would allow Apple to differentiate it from the iPad mini and give people a reason to have both...)

I'll have to wait to see it in person before I can say what I would do. I'm fine with a regular phone but I can see liking the larger display at times too. I have an iPad mini that would be about the same size and like using that.

Same, although I am perhaps more skeptical than you. I’ve seen few people over the last couple years open a Samsung fold up during a meeting, and about the only noticeable ‘thing’ is how little I was interested in ‘it.’

If it operated like an iPad mini when opened, and connect a track pad and keyboard then I could see it being really useful without even trying it in person.

Based on those figures it would have a folded footprint of about 3.2-3.3" x 4.7-4.8" which is not that much bigger than a Flip 7, and WAY smaller than my current S22 Ultra (approx size of a Blackberry 7730, according to gsmarena)

The dimensions would look odd at first, but I could see it being very usable one handed while folded, and a great alternative to the iPad Mini when open. I'd be tempted by this - I almost pre-ordered the Fold 7, but it's lacking pen support, so I'll hold off a while longer.

Pencil support is a must.

To me this is exactly what I want since it is the best of both worlds, basically like the iPad Mini 5 when unfolded but a smaller phone than my Pro Max when folded and placed in my pocket.

If the rumoured screen sizes and aspect ratios are correct it will be able to both be smaller in my pocket while at the same time being a bigger display when playing video than the Z Fold 7. That is the entire point of this type of foldable to me, having a larger display than my Pro Max when needed but not being forced to have a big device in my pocket.

I don’t think the normal candybar size of a Pro Max is good when unfolding it once because of the aspect ratio it produces when unfolded, it is great for the “tri-fold” devices though.

In 2007, Apple innovated the business model for selling expensive smartphones by allowing customers to pay off their $499 iPhone in installments along with their monthly cellphone bill. And now high-end smartphones are typically sold for twice that at $1,000.

What is the business model for selling foldable smartphones when they've doubled the price yet again to $2,000?
I feel like you know the answer but you can...

1. Purchase outright
2. Purchase outright but on installments
3. Purchase from your carrier with a discount
4. Purchase from your carrier with a discount but on installments

Most people wouldn't be paying full price since they can sell or trade their current phones in with their carrier. I usually upgrade my iPad to a larger ssd and cellular so I will be avoiding several hundred dollars in those upgrade costs and wont have the iPad data plan costs either.

"Due to challenges with AI implementation on larger screens not meeting quality standards, the product launch has been postponed to 2035, aligning with the release of the new SIRI.".

I would say my brother in law would love ok at this as he only has an iPhone Max, no tablet. Does have a MacBook Pro though and an Apple Watch, but I think he may flinch at the cost of its over 2 grand. Plus first time Apple product.

I would argue that most people don't need a phone the size of the ProMax for everything so this gives them the benefit of a smaller phone while having a much larger screen when they want it.

$500 then is more like $775 now, so in real terms $1000 now is more like a third more expensive, not double.
right, and also this foldable will not be double the price of an iPhone.
I don’t think people understand what “double” means.
top of the line iPhone right now *starts* at $1199, safe to assume that this year it will start at $1299 like the recent Samsung Galaxy ultra’s.
foldable iPhone is rumored to cost between 1800 and $2000.
$1899 is not double of $1299, no matter which way you spin it.
for it to be double the price of the current Pro Max, it would need to start at $2398, which is anywhere from $400-$700 more than rumored.

Apple knows its users cant handle the teething pains which come with true innovation. If Apple had released a fold with all of the issues the Z-Fold-1 had, the negative reactions would have been magnitudes more extreme than what Samsung got.

I agree with you on this 100%. Apple users are pretty accustomed to Apple releasing version one products that, while maybe missing a few obvious features, feel fully baked and do most everything that they do almost perfectly. This is why there has been so much controversy over the Apple Intelligence features.

I got off the every year / every other year upgrade cycle when the 10 / X came out and plan to keep my 14PM until this arrives because I’ve been waiting for this. My phone is my main device so screen real estate is important. I would even welcome something like a tri screen Huawei Mate XT Ultimate it would certainly have picked up a OnePlus Open if it was US available and ran iOS. If it is not for you then so be it. I don’t have an issue with a $2k device that I use every day and can do so many things on and plan to keep 3-4 years minimum. No different than a good computer. Especially if it maintains a residual value.

I’m one of those who see a fold as a gimmick and a concept that offers too little added value compared to numerous compromises. But even I would find a fold useful compared to a flip. A flip, if anything, is a foldable (or in this case “flippable”) device whose only reason for existing is that it can flip :p
What are you talking about? They have the same exact fundamental function, folding a larger screen to fit into a smaller area for convenience. One is just bigger than the other, giving options according to user preference. It’s a quantitative difference, not qualitative.
