2026 Formula One Season Thread

Not sure who is on pole at the moment. FIA timing screens say Russell's pole lap was deleted and SKY is reporting the same. F1TV still showing Russell in P1. As a tifosi, hoping it is and the front row is Charles and Lewis, but even if his lap stands, happy to see Ferrari so strong.

So looks like it was a single yellow zone at Max's crash and George perfectly timed his lift to ensure he was within the regulations but still lost minimum time so he will start on pole and likely with a car a tenth or two faster than his posted time.

Alas for Kimi, it was double yellow by the time he arrived so he had to back off even more and fell to fourth behind Charles and Lewis.

Correct. Kimi mistakenly thought it was a double-yellow so he backed off fully. George arrived shortly thereafter, correctly identified it as a single-yellow, so backed off slightly (losing about a tenth in the sector).

It sounds like after George went through RC called for double-yellow, which ensured nobody else could improve.

Personally, car in barrier, instant 🚩, just to calm everyone down, the flashing board is confusing, car in hedge, 🚩... it should not be difficult, we have now established that the white line defines the track, cross that with all 4 and that is a no no, put the car in the hedge, 🚩 as it will take time to mend the hedge, retrieve the car...

I'd assumed it would be red flagged at that point... oh well.
 
As soon as the Verstappen started his journey to check the barrier, the marshal hit single yellow on the controller, and this alerted Race Control, from this point to a double yellow, 15 seconds..

To me that is way too long, there should be a point where, no matter, it is RED, this does 2 things, cancels any hot laps, and everyone knows what is going to happen, you don't have to guess... It is about safety.. A complete no brainer, accident like car in hedge, red..

Maybe they will review protocol and investigate a quicker red button action.. I hope so..

The time to double yellow was unacceptable. I don't believe it warranted a Red though and long as the driver was reporting that they were ok.

The point is, in the Q session, time is ticking, and if you have a red, then the clock stops.. That is the point, it is not about the danger so much, but what happens...A double yellow is pointless, as no one benefits, it wastes time...

If a car is in the hedge, red, stop the clock, cars can reset, no harm..This red flag serves a dual function, to calm everyone down, and to stop the clock..

If Max had kept it on the track, he absolutely would have been in the top three, as would Kimi. Even Isack may have had a shot at the second row considering the updates Red Bull implemented between Barcelona and Spielberg have completely transformed the RB22.

Max's off gifted Ferrari 2nd and 3rd in qualifying and they showed their true (lack of) pace in the race. And letting Charles and Lewis scuffle when Charles was on significantly worse tires - tires he was on his way to shed right after Lewis forced his way by and took damage doing so - IMO cost Lewis hit shot at taking Piastri before his final stop.

The “Speed Drone” footage was well executed.

Max commented in the post interview that there were several issues with the car after the halfway mark that kept him from settling into his rhythm. I watched his in car most of the race. GP was on the radio giving Max settings options far more than usual. It will be interesting to see next race. Even Issac had a decent finish given all his complaints during the weekend. I’m betting Max could have made a pass on George without the issues. The Red Bull seemed as good on its deg as the Mercedes. That surprised me.

I had a feeling he wasn’t 100% while watching him walk around during the pre-race festivities. He admitted hurting his knees yesterday after being questioned by DC.

Ferrari has thermal issues. Both “B Spec” ICE units had to be turned down.

McLaren seems to be finding a grove, or at least appears to be.

On to the other side of the pond. Gonna open that bottle of Macallan our oldest just brought back from Scotland after the finish.

Enjoyed the race. Lots of overtaking and the result wasn’t such a slam dunk.

I’m not sure why they put Lewis on softs. Yes he got the benefit of pitting under the VSC, but he didn’t really gain. Why not a fresh set of hards or mediums even?

Also Ferrari should have asked Charles to step aside instead of costing his teammate time when he was on fresher rubber.

Good drive from Max and it looks like those upgrades are working (well here anyway).

George did well to hold onto first. Another 5 laps and he might have been 3rd.

And yes I thought the drone footage was superb.

Onto Silverstone. At least I can watch that one live!

My guess is the goal was to get him past Hadjar and Piastri and then come in for his final stop and harder rubber.

Agreed - doubly so since they were going to bring in Charles that lap or next.

So what happened to the Lawson fire? He was or was not on fire? More to the point, where was race control? They are all having a fag behind the port a loo's?? If he was on fire then he should have been called to the pits.. But no.. Race control was too busy having a cheeky fag..

A good race and glad to see George continuing his recovery with another win. Glad he wasn't penalised in qualifying and he was absolutely right about the single yellow in that sector, even if maybe the marshals got it wrong. Ferrari didn't seem to have a lot of pace in the race, typical Ferrari maybe? Looking forward to Silverstone and maybe watching that one live, its usually the only live race I watch in a season.

I wonder that myself. I just assumed that the aerodynamic force put the fires out.
 
Some of the best racing so far! Great to see Max and Lewis battle it out again. RB showing that Ford engine has some real grunt to it, Hadjar didn't do to badly either. Mercedes seemed to have messed up their strategy a bit though.

Not sure what our weather will be like next weekend, they say it'll go over 30 again but not till the 6th so Sunday could end up a hot one, add the humidity we get in the UK and it'll make for interesting times with that Ferrari engine!
