Yeah, it was a completely nuts penalty to give to Hamilton.
Our local commentators, one of which is a Formula 1 driver) also could not understand it.
The stewards say that the reason he got a penalty was that he understeered into Russell. - ah comon, its the first lap, on cold tires, cold tarmac, in traffic.
Russel and Toto Wolff also did not blame Hamilton either.

Leclerc was however lucky go get away with not getting a penalty for his move. Watching his reaction in the cool down room, I guess he was not aware himself how close that was. Ups.

BTW; did anyone else notice how bad the TV directing has gotten this year?
There was a massive scrap between Galsy, Ocon and Colapinto and we only got to see it on the tiny picture-in-picture screen and we did not get to see any of the collisions in the back of the field in lap 1, nor what caused the two VSC.
During the British Grand Prix, there was just one replay of any action at all and none of what happened in the sprint.
Its dreadful.
That is on top of the choices of only showing passes at low angles so people cannot see when the overtakes are the typical yo-yo energy starved "battery" passes and real passes.
And of course, the RPM, speed and battery graphics have disappeared completely as well.

So we know that self-learning AI is used to help control how energy is harvested and deployed by the PUs, and it looks like these systems can become "confused" by driver inputs and this can have outsized effects on lap times.

F1 and the FIA are confused. Time for a hard reset.

Should be a 2 litre V8, semi automatic gearbox, no computers, no hybrids, you get 1 free gear ratio change after every 3rd race..

Open fuel suppliers, bring back the witch's brew cocktail of carbon based fuel...

Open supplier of tyres

And you have to build your own engine.. No customer engines...

We could have all the best and still we would be conned by the FIA and F1 with incompetence and maladministration...

The quality of the coverage on Sky is a joke, I know they are not production, that is FOM, and FOM is a joke, really are they cutting the world feed using Braille or random selection loaded from a test last year???

Would almost be better to have F1 radio... The video is not anything to be proud of.. They miss all the key moments...

George having a sob, and we say that 2 or 3 hours later after the race when the team in London eventually found the clip.. And nope no tears..

So no Bahrain, 1-4 October, that has been cancelled..

So we are still waiting for 2 replacements, Las Vegas said nope to a back to back, apparently that would destroy any hope of a 2027 race if they held a back to back, No one in Vegas wants to upset the locals...

Australia have declined an early start to F1 2027, they are building a new pit garage complex, and it will not be ready..

It seems the desire for more events maybe was a bridge too far for 2026...

The Race talks about the AMR26B set to arrive this weekend.

I have not been able to find a corroborating source, but LawVS in his video today said that the updated Honda RA626H arriving at Zandvoort could have up to 50bhp more than the current engine and would significantly close the gap to the Ferrari and Audi PUs. The Race video above notes Honda has been facing detonation issues ("knock") with the engine and are struggling to achieve the 16:1 compression ratio.

Gee, did someone get a free PHD from an ad on the side of a Grape Nuts cereal box? You would have thought pistons and compression ratio's a solved issue since we have been using pistons since 1950...

Having to meet a hard limit on compression ratio across the entire operating range likely constrains the design to some extent. You want it to always be as close to 16:1 as possible, but you also want to ensure it can never be higher, since if it is and the FIA discover that, they will bring the ban hammer down on you.

In interviews leading into the Hungarian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso confirmed he is not looking to move to another team for 2027, noting he has a firm contract in hand with Aston Martin. However, he did not formally confirm he will be driving for the team next year, as he wants to see how the new AMR26B and revised Honda RA626H PU perform after the summer break. My guess is that if they make the car at least consistently competitive to make Q2, he will stay. And if he does retire as a driver, I would expect him to take an "brand ambassador" role or some such.

Or he goes back to WEC and drives the Valkyrie. 😛

Ferrari have added the extra mini rear-wing elements for Hungary (similar to what McLaren, Mercedes and Red Bull ran at Monaco). McLaren will also debut their "Macarena" wing this weekend.

Red Bull are supposed to bring their flip rear wing back this weekend, lets see if they have fixed it sending Max off into the gravel pit!

Well the AMR26B was good enough to get Alonso to P13 in FP1, just under 2.5 seconds back. Stroll suffered a rear-suspension failure, but was still faster than Carlos Sainz.

The AMR26B incorporates a total of 16 upgrades that include the front and rear wings, engine cover, the entire floor structure, rear suspension, diffuser and the front and rear corners.

The L Rear control arm failure under cornering load is quite concerning however.

Let’s hope it’s not from weight savings…….

Edit: L vs R

They are reportedly running new firmware (algorithms) this weekend. Might be a learning curve, might not.

Could be. Interesting that Vesti was a half-second faster than Antonelli in the same car, while Russell's times were very close across both sessions (.991 and .933).
