Second-gen-iPhone-Air-may-get-two-cameras-instead-of-one.jpg

Put in a very basic, snapshots-and-QR-codes camera, get rid of the camera bump and stop trying to gaslight us into believing that 9mm thick phone is somehow only 5.6mm thick. (By that measure, I have a 15" waist...)

If you want a serious camera, the phone needs to be thick enough to fit the lens, and any unused space can be usefully filled with battery.

Unless EU says no of course.
The EU rules only apply to devices that "can be charged with a cable". Wireless-only is fine (although it would be stupid not to support some standard wireless charging protocol).

They should discontinue it already and bring back the iPhone mini. People don’t care about a thin phone, they’d rather have a small one.
I was going to say, QUICK someone bring up the iPhone mini on this unrelated thread somehow! but gosh darn it you have already done it. Bravo

As I'd said in a previous post this isn't possible. The rear of the dynamic island and part of the logic board sit in the central area of the plateau. There is no space to mount a second camera on top of them.
I wonder why they don’t up the mpx of the sensor and then have a base 0.5 lens that crops into 1x and 2x. Some software shenanigans can treat the barrelling effect. You’d lose a little fidelity at 2x but it’s not the end of the world.

Honestly the only thing that stopped me from buying this gorgeous phone was the lack of camera (be it 0.5 or 2) and the lack of bottom speakers.
Ditto. If they address these 2 things I will get one next year, for sure.

...unless the fold is truly exceptional (which I have software doubts about)

It's hilarious how gatekeeper-y people have been about the lack of this, it was a stupid move by Apple and clearly a part of a planned upgrade path and it bit them in the ass. The sales numbers are abysmal and a good percentage of people in this thread alone agree that this is an issue, the speaker especially since there is literally available space for it. And holes drilled.

Like, come on. Apple deserves to have this sell terribly for pulling some 2006 Apple tactic like this in 2025.

I'm glad they're going to give it another swing, even if it's because they have the expensive machining tools developed and they need to get ROI on them. I expect we might only see 2 generations of it similar to the Mini unless sales dramatically pick up.

The 20th anniversary iPhone in 2027 is going to probably obviate the category, albeit at a more expensive price point.

Now just make the following changes and I'll buy it:

* Reduce screen size to 13 mini size
I love you.
that becomes the next mini and not the air philosophy
Air = light & compact = mini.
Just buy a 16e
It's huge, just like every other phone since the iPhone 13 Mini.
I know I’m probably the odd one for thinking this, but I actually prefer how it looks with a single camera. It keeps things simple.
Same here and I would really like if we return a few years back when the camera bump was not existing yet.

The problem with this rumor is readily seen when one looks at teardowns/3D breakaway schematics of the iPhone Air.

There isn't room for a 2nd camera without a very different internal hardware layout.

Of course they can do it, but it's a pretty dramatic redesign ... much more than just "put another camera on there".

If that had been possible, they would have done so in v1, I'm sure of it.

ultrawide + stereo speakers would make the Air an instant buy for me, honestly. as someone who still feels a childlike wonder and joy for Apple’s industrial design, going into their stores and seeing the Air in person is quite marvelous. those are the only two things that make it a nonstarter for me as a phone; I frequently use the ultrawide lens on my 14PM and benefit from the stereo speakers when I’m listening to music, watching YouTube, so on. we shall see what next September brings!

A small and LIGHT one. The iPhone Air (165g) is actually 24% heavier than the iPhone 12 mini (133g). And 47% heavier than the iPhone 5s (112g). I really miss feeling of those small, feather-like phones.

Like a few here, I just don't 'get' the ultra wide angle lens as I don't like the trippy distortions you get when taking landscape photos. I guess it's good for taking shots of groups of people?

And echoing a few others here, that Apple can't sell the regular iPhone with 2 lens & speakers and then sell the Air at $200 more with only one less of both and expect it to do well, just because it's thin (which admittedly is cool, but not for a compromised device at $999)

Rectify that & start it at $899 - $100 more than the regular iPhone, well now that's tempting - and it'll sell quite a lot of units, I would say.

But keep that price point at just below the iPhone pro and for $100 more, you might as well get a slightly smaller screen, a heavier phone, but 3 lens and better battery life and so much more for your $.
I use the ultra-wide lens all the time, when I'm too close to my subject to fit everything in frame.

This ~! 👆

I honestly think folks just don't realize how heavy and unwieldy they've ALL gotten, even the Air.

Speaking as someone who uses an SE1 every single night, I can testify that the difference is incredible.

In an alternate universe, where amazing tech packed into a small space was still valued (remember how that used to be a real thing?), a small powerhouse iPhone would be seen as incredible.
